I never realized that Vinny did go thru the batting order of the opposing team and say something about the players stats and personal life until Brent brought it up. Wow. RIP VINNY
Yes, he always spoke about the opposing players, their managers, etc. Vin made it so that you couldn't "hate" the opposing team because he made it so you couldn't not like that person. He made it so that you respected the other team. He was very impartial (not a homer). And loved the game of baseball.
This was a terrific interview. I appreciate Brent’s analysis as someone who knew Vin well and can talk about his craft. So true about the numbers and the anecdotes. And what a gentleman Vin was.
I remember Game 2 of the 1977 NBA Finals. After the fight broke out, he said something about Julius Erving staying out of it and showing him sitting at mid court. He also made a comment during Game 1 of the 1975 NBA Finals. “Both coaches are black, their assistants are black. Nobody is talking about. That is progress.” Wish we could get back to that type of thinking.
