The Alliance did have enough evidence for the actions they went to - the key part are the pieces that Lennier provided, finding a Centauri staging ground, which is in contact with Centauri Prime, and then took part in the attacks. We know as the audience that there is something more going on, and Sheridan's plan (that Garibaldi messed up) was to try and give Londo time to find out what was happening, but to keep the warring sides apart as it happened.
@ChristianBoutin
@ChristianBoutin 4 месяца назад
The "We'll do whatever the Alliance finds appropriate" was negotiated in a previous episode. Drazi and Brakiri were insisting on taking the matter into their own hands. Sheridan traded short term peace in exchange from the member worlds making the decision at the end of the investigation.

One thing to notice in Darkness Ascending is that after Lennier attaches himself to the Centauri ship, the ship jumps to Centauri Prime where the fleet is gathered. The fact that they made contact with the main fleet before launching an attack on the ship is evidence enough.

I consider Delenn's "So many candles will go out tonight" one of the 2 best monologues of the series. Both are season 5, the "bad" season.

To counter your Majel Barrett line where she says that Prophecy is only 'what could be' and that we have chances to change the way things go.... like the 2 wasted chances, and 3 remaining chances she revealed to Londo... ...she also did say in that same speech where she gives the prophecy to Londo, that "You WILL be Emperor... that much of your destiny cannot be avoided." So.... there is arguments both 'for' and 'against' whether Londo is still destined to fulfill that part of his future..

Also the scene with Sheridan in the future in WWE was not a prophecy (unlike Londo's dream). Of course you can debate whether a sneak preview of the future is fixed in stone too - the series has been ambivalent about whether "future echoes" are malleable. But I just wanted make the point that prophecies are different from witnessing genuine time-slips. Probably. Of course in the real world, neither happens, and we don't have an omnipresent audience. Probably.

The alternate timeline flashes for Garibaldi and Ivanova should WWE have failed is something to consider, too.

My 3rd most favorite episode of season 5. The most haunting line spoken: When Londo looks at the night sky from the cell, and sees the Warship leaving and says "Sometimes I don't understand anything anymore", that line gave me the chills.

Remember, Sheridan is trying to build up the alliance, and we were told, early on, it barely survived. You explain some of the reasons here.

At the end of Rising Star, Ivanova said, in the following 20 years the Alliance had to tackle enormous issues, but it held. And that wasn't a prophecy, but the outro of the penultimate episode of Season 4.

Sheridan's tirade is one of the best monologues in Babylon 5. And the way it was cut was on point.
@kalzar26
@kalzar26 4 месяца назад
One of the biggest things to keep in mind with how Sheridan and Delenn are handling this is the pressure coming in from the other alliance members. They've essentially refused to take further part in the alliance until this issue is resolved and so the Alliance has to make moves or it will dissolve.

Compare Londo's reaction here with his speech (countered by G'Kar) in Season 2, when he dictated the conditions of the Centauri government and demanded that Citizen G'Kar be removed from the premises. He's taking a similarly bold stance here now, but it would seem this time he is indeed right... there's an arc here, an evolution in Londo, as if he were finally, finally on the way towards seeing what kinds of patriotism are good and what kinds are bad.

When it comes to the motivations of the ex league worlds - the Centauri spent a significant amount of the Shadow War attacking many of their worlds, so there are certainly some axes to grind. It does amuse me that every time Vir tries to do a Londo and smash up the room he's in, someone interrupts him!

I liked how you pointed out that Sheridan's promise was not a good one to make. And he acknowledged it later on, that he should never have made that particular promise. "Damn you for asking for it! And damn me for agreeing to it!" This is really the episode of Season 5 where I think we're back to the JMS plan. Maybe a couple episodes ago. By now, under the original plan, the Earth Alliance Civil War would be over, we'd have had an episode or two to calm down, then an episode or two building up to this point, and now... this point. I'm really glad you liked this episode. I personally was really disappointed with Garibaldi in this episode the first time I saw it, but I didn't know what an alcohol addiction can do, or what it's like. Now I know, and I feel bad for the guy. Not that he's not responsible for starting drinking again, but... he knows how important this stuff is, but alcohol is more important. It's the most important thing in his life now. That's how it goes. He knows he's got a job to do, but if it's a choice between drinking or doing the job (and for him it is; he can't function when drinking), he's gonna pick drinking. Just like any alcoholic.
@simongiles9749

Or perhaps more likely, Garibaldi has deluded himself that he'll be fine to do his job if he just has one little drink to take the edge off.... Self justification and all that.

Rumor is that the prosthetics Andreas wore caused a lot of body odor that he said (jokingly or not) that he liked, thus inspiring JMS to write the "natural musk" line in.

This is was honestly one of the better Season 5 episodes, if not one of the better series episodes and there's a lot going on. Some things seem a bit contrived, like Garibaldi drinkin' on the job. I guess the question is how would everything had gone down had Garibaldi been sober? Would the War sill happen? Or would there be another attack made to tip the Alliance over the edge? Anyways, I can't wait for the next "Brent Watches" for Episode 17 next week. If you think things have taken a turn for the better in terms of episode quality now, things pick up another notch!

I think you have one thing wrong, the evidence that Lennier brings of Centauri Battle Cruisers is damning. No one is supposed to have those ships but them, clearly the different major governments don't sell major war vessels, specially since they are necessarily furnished by their own secret techs. This is specially true with the Minbari and the Centauri. That is why Londo is stunned, he would not be if there was any knowledge of those major warhships used by anyone but the Centauri, it truly needs a *major* tinfoil hat conspiracy to somehow simulate that in that scale specially. That said, the response of the Centauri government, as you said, could not be other than the one they make, as you said.
@neilbiggs1353
@neilbiggs1353 4 месяца назад
More than just the ships though, Lennier got footage of them at a Centauri staging area. Maybe you lose a few ships here and there that can be repurposed, but it's much harder to claim they'd have lost a full facility
@HikaruXavier
@HikaruXavier 4 месяца назад
Exactly. The Centauri materiel and ships that were left behind or sold in weapons deals were all the small scale weapons that wouldn't cause too much issue if left behind or got into the wrong hands. It's one thing to have Somali pirates attacking international shipping lanes using U.S. made M4 carbines and a couple rubber dinghys. It's a completely different situation if there was evidence they attacked using a squadron of modern Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyers.
@gamergrad81
@gamergrad81 4 месяца назад
@neilbiggs1353 True.. but Lennier didn't get the staging area on video, just the actual attack. And that's what was shown to the League World ambassadors and Londo. Londo, who was then told it was the Narns just using leftover ships and ship components to attack the shipping lanes and frame the Centauri. The staging area part was glossed over by Lennier when he was starting to present his evidence. Not sure if it's a plot oversight in the writing, or if it simply wasn't important where the ships were docked at that moment in time before they went on to the next attack. Huh.... something to think about. I never really thought about that specific part of it before..... Good Observation! 👍 Love Season 5 (by extension the WHOLE SHOW obviously) hee hee💥💯

Finally, an episode in Season 5 (outside of episode 1) that deserves to be in the top 3 of this season. I remember being ultimately bored with this season until we get towards this point. I can't tell you the number of times I have shown this series to close friends...just to have them look at me during Season 5 going....what's the deal with this season...and me, keeping my mouth shut and just having to shake my head, but not like I got to shake my head in Seasons 3 and 4. Oh well....we all have our flaws. Let's see how they like the rest of this season....6 episodes to go.

Correct. That tends to become revenge.
@neilbiggs1353
@neilbiggs1353 4 месяца назад
It's one reason I find the idea of having the public directly elect judges and prosecutors to be fundamentally flawed. What is appropriate as a punishment often feels like it doesn't coincide with the public mood, and judges must feel some pressure towards harsher sentences if they reasonably believe that is what is desired by the electorate. The judge should feel empowered to sentence based on the facts and the best advise of experts in punishment and rehabilitation.
@cphine
@cphine 4 месяца назад
@@neilbiggs1353 Agreed. I'd go further and suggest that mandatory minimums should also not be a thing. That's across the board punishment set by the legislature that may not fit every unique case. Judges need to set punishments, not legislators who always want to look "tough on crime" regardless of specific situations.
@neilbiggs1353
@neilbiggs1353 4 месяца назад
@@cphine What do you mean by mandatory minimums? Places that use a sentencing matrix for example tend to have a lower bound for a sentence, though they also tend to have much lower sentences than the US. It's one thing I'd love to see discussed by some of the YT legal channels, especially if they could do collabs with international ones
@cphine
@cphine 4 месяца назад
@@neilbiggs1353 A "mandatory minimum" is when the Legislature passes a law, and included in the law is the minimum punishment that a judge MUST give for violating it, regardless of any extenuating circumstances or technicalities. More often than not, they simply tie a judges hands and prohibit actual "justice" from taking place. A crazy made up example just to illustrate the point would be the legislature passing a law that says if you are caught speeding, you serve 1 year in prison as a mandatory minimum. The judge must then by law sentence a speeder to 1 year in prison, even though they learned that the driver has no prior record of any kind and was barely going over the speed limit because they were transporting their child who just broke their leg to the emergency room.

Something you saw in season three that I think people don't take into account here and should: Only two years ago, the Centauri under Refa's influence went to war with almost _every_ state bordering them. Under Shadow influence they tried to conquer everything in sight. "Is there anyone on our border we're not at war with?" Londo asked. So the League doesn't _want_ to give the Centauri the benefit of the doubt. They burned all their credibility already. The alliance are out for blood and I find that disturbingly plausible. (Look at any modern war for how people behave when debating conflicts they know very little about!)

These are Centauri heavy cruisers. Nobody just "makes" some of them. You can say if they found bodies, that they could have been put there to be found. It's like an American Carrier group attacking another country and saying "We don't know it was the Americans."

"Sheridan and Delenn are wrong!" Yes, they are. I'm not going to defend the clumsy circumstancial evidence they have of Centauri culpability, or the immediate decision to isolate Centauri Prime. This all does feel like an overreaction. I will only say this: Being wrong -- overreacting -- doing the stupid thing: these are all things that organizations have done in our history. The point here is, to me, not whether Sheridan and Delenn will turn out to be right (even if they do, at this moment, they are wrong -- they do not have enough evidence to justify their decision); but whether something like the Alliance can survive and learn from its own mistakes. It's the first time they try to do it, and Sheridan and Delenn are not exactly (despite everything) experienced diplomats or analysts of Galactic history and politics. They WILL make mistakes, and this is one of them. Can the Alliance survive?

The overly dramatic intro that you refer to is, if you think about it, very very much warranted. We may have been distracted by all the telepath drama, but since the end of the Earth civil war, the members of the advisory board, which is to say our main character is, have gotten along better both professionally and personally than they ever have in the entire show. What happens in this episode actually? Actually does ruin something good. Seriously, think about it. The main characters have never gotten along so well amongst themselves as they have in the recent season.
