Its funny how Bret was the Champion and new face of the WWF but then they give the belt to Yoko and get it back on Hogan. Didnt work, he left. Then they tried to make Lugar the face, didnt work either. Then they went back to Bret. Then they wanted to make Diesal the face, pushed him hard, held the belt for a year, before they had to to with Bret again. Then Shawn Michaels rose up the ranks and was pushed as the face. Eventually Bret got the title again. While they tried to go back to Hogan, and then make Lugar, Diesal, and Shawn the face of the company, Bret was always the most reliable top star from late 92 to late 97 when the screwjob happened.

You hit it right on the money. Brett Hart was a great wrestler and I think a good person but he just could not draw the money and he was the fallback guy. Vince McMahon didn’t have a whole Kogen anymore and he kept trying to make one and he couldn’t hence why Brett Hart had to continue to be the fallback.eventually Austin showed up and the rest is history.

@@Birdman669I 100% agree with you. I love Bret Hart and think he deserves more credit for helping WWF survive that period than he gets. Many should watch a highlight reel of Owen Hart wrestling during the stampede days. Its is almost spooky how much of Owen's type of high flying wrestling we see today. Just compare it to a Rollins, Omega, Finn, Syles, or almost all of AEW. It is almost identical. And Owen was doing this during the "big man era".

Bret Hart's prowess within the wrestling ring was undeniable, but his skills on the microphone often took a backseat to his in-ring ability. However, there was a period in his career where he truly shone as a talker, and that was when he embraced the role of the anti-American heel. During this phase, Bret Hart's promos were laced with venomous critiques of American society, politics, and culture. He tapped into a vein of nationalistic tension, portraying himself as the righteous outsider who saw through the facade of American exceptionalism. It was a persona that resonated deeply with certain segments of the audience, particularly those who felt disillusioned with mainstream American ideology. But it wasn't just his anti-American rhetoric that made his mic work compelling. Hart's ability to weave personal grievances into his promos added layers of depth to his character. He frequently lamented being overlooked and underestimated by the WWE establishment, a sentiment that mirrored real-life tensions between Hart and the company. This narrative reached its climax in the lead-up to Survivor Series 1997, a pivotal moment in wrestling history now famously known as the Montreal Screwjob. Hart's vocal frustration and paranoia about being "screwed" by WWE management seemed like mere storyline fodder at the time. However, in hindsight, it foreshadowed the real-life events that would unfold in Montreal. The tension between Hart and WWE management culminated in a controversial finish to his match against Shawn Michaels at Survivor Series, where Hart was double-crossed in the ring, leading to his departure from the company under acrimonious circumstances. In retrospect, Hart's promos during this period take on a haunting quality, serving as a reminder of the blurred lines between fiction and reality in the world of professional wrestling. So while Bret Hart may not be remembered as one of the all-time great talkers in wrestling history, his stint as an anti-American heel showcased a different side of his mic skills, one characterized by biting social commentary and an uncanny ability to blur the lines between fiction and reality.

Owen and Bret also worked because of their age difference. Bret was a distinctive older brother, being 8 years older. There was a younger brother complex that Owen could really pull from. Their styles were different, but completely complimentary to one another. Owen should have won the belt from Bret, and given a few months to run with it before Diesel’s run.

I feel like Bob Backlund should have kept the belt longer after he beat Bret for it at Survivor Series 1994. Backlund should have kept it until Wrestlemania 11 and lost the belt back to Bret in a rematch. Bret should have won the Royal Rumble in 1995 to set up that match.

Nothing against backlund. But I think if they put the belt Owen at summerslam 94. Then had him drop to Diesel in late December. Then they would have a much better match tips for Nash during his title reign. If think about it Nash could have a series of matches with Shawn. A series of matches with Owen. A couple with bulldog. Before he drop it to Bret. You could have Bert chase Owen the through summer in to fall. Have Owen barley escape with the belt each time. Then let Bert take some time off like he did a the end of that year. Do that MSG house show. Say Owen original opponent wasn't there or couldn't compete. So they had to make a substitute witch would be Diesel. Have Diesel beat Owen for the title the same way he beat backlund. Then you could have Owen saying he was cheated out the title for the rest of the year. That would give you a handful of Diesel vs Owen matches for those early in your house pay per views & king of the ring. Then have Shawn win the rumble as a heel. Then have Shawn win the king of the ring as a babyface. That would give you the Diesel vs Shawn matches for WrestleMania and summerslam 95. You could even start teasing Diesel heel turn at summerslam. You could turn heel on Diesel a month or two before summerslam witch would lead to the Diesel vs Bulldog matches for the couple of in your house pay per views before survivor series. Where Diesel drops it to Bret & fully turns heel like original did that year. That would have been a lot better for Diesel's title run then the matches with sid & Mabel.

I always had a different answer than everyone else. Owen was my favorite wrestler, it wasn't Brett (he was really great though). I was always rooting for Owen vs Brett in all their matches. Keeping it real neither invented the sharpshooter, but Owen used it way before Brett ever did in New Japan and NWA and they treated him like a Blue Blazing clown, when he could do everything Brett could do and was faster and one of the best high fliers too.

I think his sentiment about Bob Backlund really shows the difference between Bret and other wrestlers, especially at the time That level of maturity to look at the situation like that, and understand paying respect to an older wrestler who had been generous to him, is something I feel like requires a level of thoughtfulness that was certainly absent among Bret's peers at the time, but is even lacking in today's generation as well (Jungle Boy, Hangman, etc.) I think that is what really sets Bret apart

The situation with Backlund, I mean would you have wanted Owen in that spot as what was simply just a transitional champion spot? Nash was getting the belt and he actually ended up winning it from Backlund in less than a minute like two days later. It was just a way to get it off one face on to another at that time. The Iron Shiek was just a transition champ when he took it from Backlund and then it went to Hogan about a month later. Owen deserved a run with the belt as an intended champion. He was as good as Triple H.

Sorry, Bret to this day what you went through. Even though I am an American I always liked you. I know you did that heel in America and face any where else. I thought that was Brilliant and never done before.

I love how wretlers took wrestling seriously back then. This or when Macho got a separation from Liz. Now you see guys have a serious "feud" with each other and then they ride together (Miz and Dolph) on a WWE show.

I only saw post-Bush, and it sucks cause, even though I love both eras, The Bush one is my favorite. Bush sung the oldies, but Joey refuses to sing Bush-era Anthrax which leads to what you said, they only stick with the old stuff. Disapointing. I held my breath both shows wishing to ear Joey's take on room for more! People always say Belladonna is a virtuoso and that John Bush couldn't reach highs like him... But I bet Joey couldn't sing Bush parts has good as Bush did Joey's songs.

I'd never heard Bret's thoughts on the Backlund match at Survivor Series '94, only that he thought their rematch at WM 11 in '95 was one of his worst. I'm glad Bret thinks the Survivor Series match was one of his best though, I thought it was great, almost up there with Bret's matches with Shawn, Austin, Owen etc. I got a bit of a sense that generally people don't rate that match, like it seems Meltzer only gave it two stars. Oh yes there was one other mistake of sorts in the match.....when Bret looks down at Davey Boy unconscious with Owen standing over him, he calls out something like "What did you do you little son of a bitch?!". So he's calling his brother a son of a bitch right in front of their mum!!! 🤔🤭

You know people can say what they want about Bret. Being bitter and taking the business too serious and all that other stuff. But you gotta commend the guy for sticking up for his family and looking out for his family all the time. And not even just his brothers, but he also looked out for both his brother-in-laws and always pushed to have them part of things like the hart foundation story in 1997, which we saw The anvil come back. That might not sound like a whole lot to commend them for but in a business like that. Where it's dog-eat-dog. He didn't ever do that.
