@@AverageCommentor I always hated the 3 year timespan between episodes 2 and 3. There's just way too much going on, often involving a lot of the same characters, for it all to have been squeezed into a 3 year timeline, even when you just consider likely travel times between war campaigns via starship and then the length of time it would take to wage entire planetary campaigns on different battlefronts across so much of the galaxy. I also have a hard time believing that the whole galaxy could have felt the war was dragging on forever with no end in sight if it only lasted less than a single American presidential term. The Clone Wars don't make any logistical sense to me in anything less than a 5 year timeline. Personally, 5-7 years makes the most sense to me, especially considering how much individual characters and their relationships to one another mature over time. Originally I know Lucas didn't intend on Leia being Luke's sister. Lucas had enough stories to make it to episode 9, but realized that wasn't realistic as the cast was going to want to move on. Luke was always supposed to have a sister tho. So he ended up merging a bunch of ideas together and one of those resulted in Leia being Luke's sister. This allows me to forgive the kisses in a New Hope as Lucas hadn't planned on them being siblings yet. Empire Strikes Back is where is gets sus. Like there's certainly many things that imply Lucas at least had an idea this was the route he was going to go.

Brett was right when she said ROTJ felt like two films because Star Wars 3 was suppose to solely be about rescuing Han Solo from the underworld. According to Gary Kurtz Luke remaining Jedi training and his storyline with Vader, The Emperor, and the long lost sister(who’s not Leia) was gonna be in the sequel trilogy. Lucas scrapped that outline after the terrible production Empire and wanted out of the franchise(making 4 more Star Wars films seem less desirable) so he condensed the hell out of the 3rd film with the underworld story and plots from the abandoned sequel’s. ROTJ is a mess of masterpiece though. Lol

I believe Lucas originally planned to bring in another character to serve as Lukes sister, but realized that there’s no time to develop a whole new character in just one movie and rewrote the story
@_XR40_
@_XR40_ Год назад
Unlikely. Lucas started a myth about how he had the entire series "planned-out" from the start - But that was always just the standard Hollywood self-promotion. Truth is that he was making it up as he went along. _Splinter of the Mind's Eye_ was the original script for the sequel (and Han Solo wasn't in it), but that changed when the first film was so successful that the sequel's budget (and Solo's popularity) went up. The sister thing was just a way to resolve the "love-triangle" from the first two movies without making either Luke or Han "the loser". There was never a _need_ for Luke to have a sister. That "...There is another..." line from the second film could have been easily covered by the fact that the Galaxy was recovering from the _Clone Wars..._
@DavidSmith-mt7tb
@DavidSmith-mt7tb Год назад
@@_XR40_ The sister thing was very much was about the "there is another" line. That was not a throwaway kind of line. Fans would have wanted to know who this person as powerful as Luke could be. The other reason is because really there was no love triangle. Luke saw a pretty girl and simped for her. She never really reciprocated, and so they became friends. At the beginning of ESB she clearly has a thing for Han she doesn't want to admit to and kisses Luke purely to make Han mad, and Luke seems to realize this as he doesn't pursue her after and instead just taunts Han about it. Even if you want to call that a triangle, it was resolved in the movie prior to the sister revelation anyway so it's totally unnecessary at that point, and also freaky to tag on incest to something that in no way needs it. Originally, the "other" was supposed to be Luke's future apprentice, who was gonna be introduced later. At the time that idea had been thrown around Lucas was considering doing episodes 6-9 after Empire and then potentially going back to do 1-3. We know this because there is video of Mark Hamill on set mentioning that Lucas had told him this at one point. Those episodes would end much how RotJ does, with the defeat of the Empire. After ESB, they decided to just make one more movie and finish the whole Emperor/Vader/Luke arc, so that character was never introduced, leaving the question "who is the other?" unresolved. So they decided to make it Leia his sister so it would make sense why she could be like him and they can resolve that issue with no new characters needed. This is where the "Lucas always planned to make 7-9" rumor started and why after the prequels fans wondered if Lucas was finally gonna make those. At that time however he had no plans for an ST anymore, but eventually did start coming up with ideas for one shortly before selling to Disney.
@wscrivner
@wscrivner Год назад
@@DavidSmith-mt7tb At the end of ESB Luke and Leia were able to communicate through the force establishing the fact that they had a connection and also that Leia had some level of force sensitivity. So I think by the time they had finished writing the script for ESB they knew her role was "the other" and Luke's sister.
@DavidSmith-mt7tb
@DavidSmith-mt7tb Год назад
@@wscrivner It's possible that the decision to make the one follow up film was made before that movie was entirely done, but then how did she find hom before that was added? I think it's more likely that at that point he could reach out to anyone through the force. They hadn't really established the rules on all that. Even in the early scripts they'd need some excuse to guide the Falcon to him. Luke uses magic is a perfectly fine excuse in a fantasy. IIRC, Luke doesn't use telepathy with Vader till the next movie. It being used after with his father, another strong force use, helps tie this twins thing together by establishing that it only works between force users. But that rule wasn't established in ESB.

What I've always thought with the Luke/Leia thing is that neither knew precisely that they were siblings. Each felt a strong connection to the other (and, indeed, Leia is force sensitive as shown in books later), but they misinterpreted the feeling of the connection. ALSO, the whole french kiss thing... I've always assumed that Leia did that to annoy/irk Solo, which makes him try harder and kinda change his approach a little (not much, but a little). I don't think there was any intentional incestuous bullshit going on. That's just people looking for things to complain about to get attention and feel special.

This one is my favorite if only because of the scenes between Luke, Vader, and the Emperor. In my opinion the Emperor's temptation of Luke is the best depiction of Satan Hollywood has ever produced, particularly his use of despair as a tool of temptation. He didn't appeal to Luke's base instincts. He tried to convince him that the only way to save the rebellion was through evil. To paraphrase CS Lewis, the worst tyrant is the one who thinks he's doing good, and the Emperor's strategy was to appeal to that feeling. In the end he failed because evil cannot comprehend good. Not only did he underestimate Luke's strength, he failed to see the good that remained in Vader.

Yeah this is my favourite too, from the opening scene to the glorious ending with Vader's funeral pyre and Victory Celebration theme, the movie great action scenes like the ones with the Rancor, the Sarlaac Pit, the speeder bike chase, Battle of Endor in space, Luke vs Vader duel, I feel like this movie has the best visual effects in the OT, like c'mon this movie introduced Jabba the Hutt (let's not forget Leia slave bikini😍) and Admiral Ackbar with "It's a Trap". I always loved the design of Death Star 2 while still being in construction. I like all the scenes of Luke and Vader, even the Emperor whose arrival was solemn, the last moments of Yoda and Anakin are touching. BTW I never hated the ewoks, even if some people felt them out of place, I read Lucas based ewoks in the Viet-Cong which makes them more interesting to me apart from being cute (the movie suggests that ewoks also eat people, they even wanted to eat Chewie and R2😫😫😫💀💀💀) I know it would have been cool to have wookies, but this movie started the career of Warwick Davis who played Wicket, the first ewok on screen, he was 11 years old, he later would appear in Willow and played several goblins in Harry Potter. I'm glad of finding people who says that ROTJ it's also their favorite Star Wars movie, my Great Uncle also says it's his favorite and he loves Victory's Celebration theme, he downloaded it for one of his digital music folders (one about soundtracks).

Great reaction there Brett 😁 I'm surprised that no one has suggested watching the two spin-off (made-for-TV) Ewoks films (written & produced by George Lucas also & stars Warwick Davis again as Wicket) made right after ROTJ, The Ewoks Adventure: Caravan Of Courage (1984) & Ewoks: Battle For Endor (1985).... they have both a Lord Of The Rings mixed with Star Wars style hybrid quality about them (considering that they were made to be family films back in the day). They are worth a watch at least in my opinion (especially since Brett liked the Ewoks in ROTJ). Peace ✌️.

About that kiss between Han and Leia from Empire: The director, Irwin Kirshner didn't know about the relationship between the two siblings when he told them to do the scene. When Lucas saw what Kurshner had done, he couldn't tell him he couldn't do it without revealing one of the big secrets of the third movie (that Luke and Leia are siblings). So, Lucas let the scene ride.

It's usually good to just introduce people to the base version of the film since they work perfectly well as they were originally released, but as unintuitive as it may sound, the extended versions might be better for some people who can't handle super long movies because each extended film can be easily digested into hour-and-a-half to two hour halves which is made all that much easier since each extended film on Blu-ray is already split into two seperate discs anyway. Either watch three longer movies over three nights, or watch shorter chunks over six nights.
