Me unboxing a very expensive Breville Automatic tea maker/brewer unit. This is my first time owning such a fancy purpose built tea brewing carafe and it has been quite interesting to see and use and it makes fantastic tasting teas.
It is a glorified hot water kettle that makes us of a nifty magnetically driven tea holding basket.
Construction of the unit is very good with plenty of stainless steel accents, digital controls + the use of high quality German Schott glass.
The unit was exceptionally expensive and I purchased the unit from Amazon.ca although it can also be purchased at retailers such as Best Buy, Home Outfitters, The Bay, Sears and even Bed Bath and Beyond.
Model: BTM800XL
Retail: $349 CAD
Sale: $199 CAD

You should read the manual first. Max water for tea making is 1200ml not the full 1500. This way your tea leaves are not soaking in the warming up water. Just saying:)

Love the constant temperature for hot tea!
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 7 лет назад
it does make a difference in the "consistency" of the tea such that every cup you pour AFTER brewing that the temp is always the same. The tea does indeed taste better as the dullness/bitterness of the tea is mitigated through proper and consistent brewing. I'm sure I could accomplish the same using a manual brewing method BUT.... I'm lazy and don't put enough effort to make a cup tea properly so now I have a glorified tea kettle to do it for me :)

You’re absolutely correct and I did notice this AFTER the fact when I published the video. I knew after seeing it that I messed up. I didn’t bother refilming the footage but I can assure you that I never made that rookie mistake ever again. The settings were defaulted based onsteeping time for specific teas its what makes the system simpler compared to on the stove guessing its basically the whole point. The best way to try the system is to use the default steep settings first to see if you like and then adjust from there. Just to be clear on that so there is no confusion about why they are defaulted to a certain temp on the type of tea button. I have been using this for a couple years and I have no need to make adjustment. Just add water stick in the bag, select the tea type press button. The big benefit is the timer. I set this up for my wife the night before and its been on time all the time. Yes there is a difference from what you make on the stove not a huge difference but my wife tastes is, better than mine, a difference and she has not used the stove tea kettle since. Is it worth it?? Well the price tag speaks volumes so this product is aimed at a tea lover who loves gadgets and can afford to swing the cost or a tea lover who loves to save time and wants a better tasting tea. Makes a great gift for a tea lover.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 7 лет назад
yeah simplicity and "bling" are the selling features of this product. I'm not sure if I agree with the price tag BUT for the tea aficionados I guess it is worth it. It is certainly convenient but wow it is expensive. So far my wife loves it and she can taste the difference too! Thanks for your input on my vid!

Before this I used a french press with a timer... This is an enormous advantage since it doesn't overbrew and keeps it hot for up to 60 minutes. But if you can't justify this, by all means, use a smaller french press, it'll do the same job.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 6 лет назад
yep for sure. I still use a french press because at times it is just simpler b/c I have hot water in my hot water pot vs. having the wait to boil and brew my tea. BUT my spouse wanted one so here we have it :)

hello piercedasian, can you tell me, what is the maximum brewing time, wich you can adjust in custom brewing time mode ? also, i wannt to ask, about another situation, for example, you made 1,5 liters of tea, and you drank only 500ml, so you have left 1000ml of tea. so, is it possible, to warm up this tea for optimal drinking temperature ? (i mean, not just to boil it, but just warm it up for drinking, for example 50-60-70-80 degrees of celcius ?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 6 лет назад
To reheat tea you will need to boil the water and then enable the keep warm function and wait out the temperature the tea to drop down to the optimal temperature. Custom brew time maxes out at 10 minutes. Sorry for taking so long to reply.

Thanks for this very in-depth and insightful video! I'm just stumbling upon the fact that this Tea Maker by Breville exists, although I think the newer units look a bit different in the buttons/layout. How easy to clean once the contents have been finished off? The karaffe, the plate etc? Since the karaffe cannot be washed under running water, I'm guessing it has to be wiped with a clean towel. Is the tea-basket dishwasher-friendly or is that also a handwash-only thing?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 2 года назад
I normally just give it a rinse or a light rubbing with some soap on a sponge to clean out the insides. I don't bother trying to scrub the tea stains out every time (it isn't necessary and is actually not desirable to do that). Give it a few good rinses and call it a day. You're correct in that it cannot be submerged so be careful when cleaning it out and only allow water to be on the insides of the carafe.

Hey there thanks for your review. I know this can be used as a tea maker and a normal kettle. From your experience is this practical as an all in one solution or should it stick only to tea? After I’ve made a tea, say there’s a little left in there and someone else wants to boil some water for cooking pasta. Would I need to get rid of the remaining tea, clean the kettle, then boil the water? How easy is the cleaning process ? Thanks In advance
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 3 года назад
We use ours exclusively for tea but you could use it to boil plain water. The clincher with using a tea brewer to boil water is that it CAN transfer the remnant flavours of what was previous brewed into the newly boiled water. Some people like myself can taste it but could care less while others would kick and scream if their boiled water had any taste to it. I clean our brewer by simply dumping out the tea leaves rinsing the basket and then using a soapy sponge to clean the insides and the parts. There is a buildup of tea stains inside the tea basket and the kettle portion of it but we leave it like that because it doesn't impart any weird tastes to our next batches of tea. In some cases I don't need to wash the basket or kettle out with soap at all and a plain rinse with water is all that is sometimes needed to keep things clean.
@timingandheart
@timingandheart 3 года назад
Thanks for getting back to me. I got the kettle in the end and I love it. As you said I found the changing between tea to boiling water has the residue issue if the tea has a strong taste. Eg Chai with its spices or Earl Grey with is bergamot. What I’ve started doing if I know it’s going to be needed for plain water for cooking etc I rinse out any remaining tea, then run the kettle on boiling mode with a teaspoon or two of citric acid. And leave it to cool down then rinse again. Taste goes and the kettle is clean as an added bonus 👍🏼
@PreYeah
@PreYeah 2 года назад
Also, is this suitable to make milk tea? I'm guessing the milk would have to be added separately after pouring out the steeped tea from the karaffe?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 2 года назад
I would add the milk into your cup and not into the carafe. You CAN put it in but it just means more washing for you. I rarely have to wash mine out with a lot of scrubbing or soap. Normally a good rinse and the occasional boil of plain water is what I mostly do to keep mine clean. Yes there are plenty of tea stains but I've read that it is a good thing to keep in the carafe. Since I drink mostly the same teas that it does not seem to have affected the taste at all.

Yes it is! This brewer really isn't mean to brew just a single cup of tea bu approximately 1.2 litres of it (in my video I actually overfilled the water for tea making. That's how I say it... "bray-vil"

But how my dude? You burnt your tongue on some hot tea or something?
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 6 лет назад
I probably said it weird in my video because I had orthodontic braces at the time in my mouth and hence why it probably sounded "off".

I can't believe I wasted 10 minutes of my time to find out that you didn't know how to use the unit.
@piercedasian

I don't think one can use it "wrong" but rather that the only thing I messed up was the initial water level (too high) which is hardly a deal breaker.

@@krankenheim13 Let's have a cup of tea to that! It was an honest mistake on my part and certainly not worth arguing about. I now know better :). Stay safe as well!

You should be more careful with the Styrofoam. When I saw you pulling it then breaking it then throwing it around, I was appalled and had to stop watching.
@piercedasian
@piercedasian 7 лет назад
Careful with styrofoam in what sense? It isn't like I can inhale it and the local municipality won't recycle it. I thoroughly wash everything before using it so I'm not sure what the issue is.
