Almost 1 year with my dual boiler and I didn’t know my dual boiler opv is set way high, more than 13 bar when running the blind basket. Set it down to 10.5 and boy what a difference it made with my shot!
Hey Peter, My BDB makes a boiling, hissing noise (the likes of putting cold water into a hot vessel) when I am expressing and for a few seconds after expressing has finished. I notice a small water stain at the base of the OPV. No other leaks. The machine works well, 3years now, but for this noise. Any ideas from you would be appreciated, thanks
Thanks for sharing Peter - your very helpful posts on HB have single handily convinced me of going with the BDB, away from more expensive and shiny alternative. Can't wait to dial things in before messing up with flow profiling. On that topic, any thoughts on 'ideal' profiles guidelines ? I understand the whole point is to adjust as you go but there must be some basics ? Thanks again :)
Grinder grinder grinder. This machine has the capability to get the best out of any grinder money can buy. That said: pre infuse manually on the lowest setting (pp55 IIRC) that you can and hold it there until you begin to see the first bead on a bottomless, or until you see the first wiggle of the pressure gauge. Try it both way in fact, before you release the button for the spin up to full power. Set OPV to peak at 9 bar on a blind filter. And for at least the second half of the shot see if you can slow down the flow by cracking open the water knob. But not so far it stops the shot

Won't impress any coffee nuts online but I'm impressed so that's all that matters ;) Out of curiosity, if I'm not confident enough to adjust the OPV valve (yeah yeah I know), would cracking open the water knob to keeping thing at 9 or under work the same ? Same idea for pre-infusion, instead of relying on the menu power and holding down the button, simply crack open the water knob to keep the pressure low a la Salyer ?Thanks again Peter, much appreciated!
Peter, why are you adjusting the steam OPV ? Is it bypassing ? I don't know if you can adjust steam boiler temperature, if not then you can't increase the pressure. I could understand adjusting the brewing OPV but not the steam. It seems to be disconnected from your boiler too.
I have never adjusted the steam OPV. Further, on the -920 you _can_ adjust the steam boiler temperature. Only I don’t. I just leave it at default. And yes, on my particular machine that the OPV is disconnected from the boiler. The point on the boiler where it is disconnected is where the pump pressure enters the system. my BDB has a rotary pump, mounted under the kitchen sink and so there is a separate tube coming from my rotary pump, entering the system at the steam boiler in the same place the stock pump/OPV would
Hi Peter, could you offer your wisdom on what I should do? Recently my BDB stopped achieving 9 bars of pressure, even with the blind basket. It goes to about 7. Also, when it does max out at 7 with the blind basket, I don't hear that pulsing sound I used to hear when the pressure would jump up and down around 9-10 bars. Now it just stays at 7 and makes no pulsing sound. My hunch is that this is a tired pump and that I should order a new Ulka Ep-5 and swap it.
@@JakeSpino yes! Bought a new pump and replaced some O-rings of the steam boiler, particularly the one on the side, which is hard to access. As good as new now.
@@maximlamoureux4129 Would you say that was a difficult fix? I'm coming from a bambino and the concept of replacing parts of my machine is a little intimidating. I have really no experience with wiring or tubing. The most complicated thing I've ever done like that is building a computer when I was in high school. Would you say it's do-able with a little research?
The Breville Dual Boiler. $1599 new at WilliamsSonoma, and other retailers…. comes with a CHEAP PLASTIC OPV. And this is exemplary of the general construction of the unit. No wonder so many folks have trouble with Breville espresso machines. Sad, because he general concept of these machines is good.
The stock OPV works a treat and never fails. And if by some fluke it ever did fail, it’s cheap and easy to replace. Also, since the BDB uses mostly standard commercial form factor stuff, you can replace the OPV with a brass one easily. Same with the pump. Same with the solenoid. Or pretty much anything. Mine is plumbed into my water supply and has a rotary pump, and full beginning to end, on the fly flow control, for example
