As the winter of 1942 eased into spring, the improving weather led to an intensification of the air war over Karelia and the rest of the Finnish front. With the ice still solid on the Gulf of Finland, an attack was launched across it to recover Soviet held islands. This led to combats between Finnish Brewster 239 fighters and Soviet attack planes. Meanwhile the lend-lease Hurricane fighters began to appear in large numbers. The battles between the Finns in their American-built Buffaloes and the Soviets in the British machines would continue all throughout June, with the Brewster marking up a very impressive record against the Hawker machines.
