As the winter of 1942 eased into spring, the improving weather led to an intensification of the air war over Karelia and the rest of the Finnish front. With the ice still solid on the Gulf of Finland, an attack was launched across it to recover Soviet held islands. This led to combats between Finnish Brewster 239 fighters and Soviet attack planes. Meanwhile the lend-lease Hurricane fighters began to appear in large numbers. The battles between the Finns in their American-built Buffaloes and the Soviets in the British machines would continue all throughout June, with the Brewster marking up a very impressive record against the Hawker machines.

Lt Hans Wind was a manager at the same company where my grandmother worked at the same time in the city of Tampere after the war. Just came to my mind first time in years after hearing his name being mentioned by you.

Thanks for doing this excellent series on a much maligned and little known aircraft. Additionally, the increased insight into military aviation during the Finnish-Soviet wars have been quite informative. Keep up the hreat work! Cheers

In soviet was very rare good fighter pilots. Their tactic was put some bites in lower level and lurking from above for make suprise attack. One of those, Hasse Wind got hit and somehow returned to home airfield.

At four minutes that mechanic is cranking the inertial starter of that 239 and not inspecting the plane.

One thing about the Russians - is that it is true that they were under fairly strict control from ground controllers. This was true even of the Cosmonauts. After the purges of the Soviet Military Stalin conducted - everyone was scare shitless of doing anything but just exactly what they had been told to do. I've seen this as a meme in more recent Russian Movies about WWII, where the hero wants to so something sensible to preserve the lives of his men - and the Soviet Bureaucracy comes down on him for it. However, in the case of pilots not taking any evasive movements while under attack - that is something that was seen the most among brand new pilots who had been committed to combat before they were ready. There were a lot of operational losses during training of WWII pilots and to some degree, some of the new pilots might have been more afraid of their own aircraft than they were of the enemy. I was unaware that there were 12 gun versions of the Hurricane but have confirmed that. It's ironic that you had Brewsters taking out the .50 cal guns because they jammed and replacing them with the .303 Browning which were more reliable - while the Soviets took out the .303 Brownings, which despite their reliability didn't pack enough of a punch. I guess the grass is always greener ... but you did have each side engaging different aircraft. There is also a fairly extensive write up on on Wikipedia of Operation Benedict en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Benedict the arrival of the first Hurricanes in the Soviet Union in WWII. .

As an ame inverting piston rings isn't going to affect cooling

Honestly I thought it sounded weird but I've never seen a Cyclone and it's what the sources say. Maybe garbled on the way from the field to whoever wrote it down?

@@MarkSeven I would assume it's lost something in translation, somewhere. I find your vids interesting and informative ,and understand you can't fact check everything or be an expert in every field . Just pointing out a discrepancy,....that's what ame's do. 👍

according to "engine builder" the ring package is to transfer heat from the piston to the cylinder wall. making an adjustment to the ring just ay have had an effect
