Brexit is to blame for Dover hold up, not France | Simon Calder

"There is no suggestion that the French are doing anything other than being diligent."
The French are simply fulfilling Britain's wishes by conducting time-consuming border checks, leading to a backlog at the Port of Dover, says Simon Calder.

Absolutely right, they do. One should perhaps point out that nowhere are they as serious as the problems in Britain, though. Take economic growth, for example. Britain is the only country in Europe that is suffering negative growth. Italy and Greece, for example, are performing significantly better than Britain. And the cause of Britain's economic woes compared to every single member country of the European Union is clear and indisputable. Yes, let's hear it for Brexit...

Yes France has a massive problem and the country is up in arms with huge protests. Macron wants to raise the retirement age from 62 to 64. Meanwhile, in the UK the government wants to raise it from 67 to 68 and that barely raises a comment because our problems here are 100 times worse. Inequality is getting worse by the month. Since Brexit the number of children in poverty has doubled to 4 million. News out last week, 2.5 million (out of 19.3 million) households missed "must pay" bills. That is already 13% of households in severe financial distress. The poorest 20% in Slovenia are now better off than the poorest 20% in Britain. Never mind, Rishi will take care of things. He will make sure the UK is a safe place for hedge funds. Meanwhile, Michele Mone's luxury PPE yacht is safely moored just south of Barcelona. Enjoy, Michele.

It used to travel to Italy regularly and since Brexit and end of the transition period it has become ESSENTIAL to have you passport stamped on exit? Why? Because if they failed to ‘sign you out’, you could be considered to still be in the EU and to then breach the 90 in 180 rule simply by having not been ‘clocked out’ when you left. And the consequence of that? Well, in Italy, and it varies by EU country, it would be a €10,000 fine. Does that sharpen up you interest in being stamped in and out accurately?

@@fredmercury1314 It's quite simple really. When you have to manually check every passport for each person going through the border, going through every page, checking it's stamped, then adding up the days to make sure it doesn't go beyond 90 within the last 180... it takes longer than showing them the page where you have your photo and date of expiration. Most of the time they didn't even check that, they just checked you actually had an actual passport to speed things up. They can't do that any more. When I've travelled to the continent since Brexit, even at quiet airports like Gothenburg, it still takes like 4 times longer to check someone with a UK passport than an EU one. They check your photo, dates (it has to have at least 3 months left on it, ie, those 90 days), check to see how many days you've been within the EU in the last 180 and they ask you a few questions like do you have a return ticket and somewhere to stay, how long you're intending to stay etc. It doesn't take that long, but when you multiply it by hundreds of people getting off flights compared to just checking if you have an in date passport and your photo matches you can easily see how such delays happen. Everyone who voted for Brexit asked for this. Our government specifically asked for it by becoming a third country with a hard border. We, in the EU and before that in the common market have been working to make exchanges and travels as smooth and easy as possible and we made real progress (no borders between France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, no currency exchange needed, no duties, no roaming charges, etc). This is about CONVERGENCE. In the meantime, Brexiters have done all they could to stop this Freedom of Movement by getting the hardest possible Brexit they could and reneging on many of their past commitments. This is all about DIVERGENCE. (Remember UKCA, phitosanitary rules, and all EU standards to be deleted?) In the meantime, terrorist threats and war in Ukraine are a reality and so, border control is a very serious matter. France is doing EXACTLY what it is stipulated in agreements. So the UK voted repeatedly to be out of the EU (2016, 2017, 2019) and sovereign and a third country and this is ITS ABSOLUTE RIGHT. The result are full checks at borders. Have you landed in Chicago or NY and have to wait 2 hours at the airport? (Happened to me many times). All these Brexiters WANTED IT and now they are moaning about it? and the preregistration for visas does not provide a shortcut. So it is fair to say it will get worse when full biometric checks are in place (supporsed to be in fall 2022 but postponed at UK's request.

As a person who would travel to France regularly from Dover I was never waived through once because I was entering the Schengen Zone so for security reasons my entry into the zone had to be registered because if someone was waived through and then that person then went on to blow themselves up in a Paris shopping center there would be a outcry on why that person wasn't registered as entering the Schengen Zone because that could have raised a red flag that he was already a person of interest to another police force. So for that reason this idea that people could just be waived through is not correct because if that was the case then what would be the point of the Schengen Zone?

All the years I traveled, normally we would show our passports exactly as Simon Calder described on the video, normally they would quickly look at the photos but sometimes didn’t bother and on a one of occasion the French post was unmanned. It is mandatory to submit your passport details at the time of booking your crossing, and presumably these details passed on and you are under surveillance through the port, to confirm the occupants match the vehicle. When you check in, all occupants are checked your passports are processed which ferry companies were obliged to pass on, so you were more than registered as entering the Schengen zone. This was Clearly enough when we were a EU state, but now obviously all has to be done at the French immigration post which is time consuming.

@@glumonion1454 I have read comments from people who thought you didn't need to send your details before you traveled you just turned up at Dover and they would let you through which is because the UK and France was in the EU so they obliviously dont know what the Schengen Zone is and how it works . I live in a mainland EU country and travel back to the UK once a month so on my return trip I have seen non permit holders UK citizens being served by the passport control and it takes no more than a few minutes to ask them a question stamp their passport and them let them through and I have read comments from people who have also said the same thing flying into other EU countries so this idea that because we are now no longer in the EU is causing delays for UK citizens is not actually true because how could it be when the only difference to travel now is to just ask a person what is the purpose of their journey

@@davidsummer8631 When the UK was in the EU, there was freedom of movement. In other words, any UK citizen had the RIGHT to go to any EU country, and work and live there permanently. Because the UK was not in Schengen, you still needed a passport check but that was a formality. EU countries couldn't refuses access unless you were wanted by the police. They didn't have to check anything else. Schengen is exactly the same, except that checks are completely removed so the borders are completely gone. If you drive from the Netherlands to Portugal, there are ZERO checks in Belgium, France, Spain and then Portugal. After brexit, the situation is completely different. UK citizens have lost the right to freedom of movement, so they are treated as any other citizen in the world, which includes full border checks. This takes a bit longer than just checking who you are and if you are wanted or not. Sure, if there are enough booths and officers to do the checks, there wouldn't be a problem, but you cannot deny that because of brexit, passport checks take a bit longer, and so because of brexit, the current capacity to do the passport checks is not sufficient. Suella Braverman says its got nothing to do with Brexit. So let’s see what ChatGPT has to say. This is it’s response: “Yes, the border queues in Dover are related to Brexit. After the UK left the European Union, new border controls were implemented, which have led to longer waiting times for vehicles crossing between the UK and EU.” Any chance we can replace the UK government with Ai… seems like its has more integrity?

It is somewhat baffling that people in the UK didn't think this was going to happen as a consequence of Brexit? This was completely obvious and known well in advance - it's not like this a new issue - any person from a 3rd country needs to go through passport control - the issue here was the complete lack of any highlighting of this and other similar issues to the British people during the Brexit debate - watching afar from Ireland, the man on the street over here knew that British peoples' access to Europe was going to be impacted by Brexit, but they didn't seem to know this themselves! astonishing really....

Actually that's not too far from the truth, most flat tyres come from badly cleaned or maintained roads, the government that took you out of the EU, that most voted for to get Brexit done, also have a policy of low taxes for the rich and austerity for the rest of us resulting in local authorities with no funds to repair roads. As an Australian working in the UK, it was typical for my work mates from the UK to flash the photo in their passport and wait on the other side while I lined up for a minimum of 15 minutes to get stamped in. Often much longer. On the bright side, this is no longer necessary as all the clients we would visit on the continent have gradually gone elsewhere over the last two years - so we don’t need to worry about passport control anymore. Every single client. German, Dutch, Polish, French, Danish and Portuguese. So the company has been laying people off due to the lack of contracts and I’m going back to where I came from - Shocked and saddened at the unbelievable stupidity of the world’s biggest self-own. I thought I knew the Brits pretty well but this insanity proves I have no idea. I’m outa here, you lot are as mental as the Russians, luckily just not as violent.
