Thank you for talking about the messy theme work. I like things being nicely themed, like previous years.... then there's this...It's like they had a theme, then randomly threw a second one on top of it for some reason. Then after listening to some of the songs some of them are named after, it's like the choice misses both somehow... some of them do match, but others... just flat out sound like nothing more than romance to me... it's like WHY IS THIS HERE???
Yes, exactly! And I didn't even think to listen to the songs that were referenced (at least for the Bejeweled SMs, I do know a lot of the songs that make up the names for the SRs)...interesting that some of them also apparently have nothing to do with the main theme, lol.
I’ve been disappointed with the theme.. I love the theme of against all odds and the limited editions are great in my opinion! ( the portrait ones because I- I don’t know what the heck that fire horse is ) Like I honestly hate that idea of girl power because I know some people who are males and they like to collect models and go to breyerfest. I remember last year I loved the theme and the models were gorgeous! ( I even bought an extra ticket to buy the horses! ) but.. not this year.. as you’re a new collector I recommend looking at past models from past Breyerfest’s! I honestly like a lot from past Breyerfest’s than most recent ones lol! For my opinions, I like a good bay regular horse or a plain horse 😂 ik I’m boring but I find them beautiful! And for the mare and foal set, they always use the premier club horses/ newest molds for the special runs. They always have a vintage mold though so there’s that. And omg I have a love with Spanish molds as well! I love the cancion mold and planning to conga him! Anyways, you earned a new sub :)
Thanks for the sub and thanks for your comments! I have looked at models from past Breyerfests and some of the earliest models I bought when I got back into collecting were from previous years. I guess every line-up has had hits and misses, it just seems like there were way more misses this year. Ah, well!
Finally have time to leave a proper comment. I don’t like the switch from Against All Odds to Girl Power either. There’s nothing wrong with Girl Power but that should have been the theme for a future BF. Against All Odds is a great theme with lots of possibilities & it deserves better than to be hijacked. Most of the names based on pop songs by female artists are just plain awkward. There are several great & easy to remember names that would have fit the theme better than the convoluted names that have been announced. Perseverance,”, “Determination”, “Victorious”, “Overcome”, “Beating Adversity” & “Defy Expectations” are wonderful names. Instead of just female singers they could have highlighted other women that excelled in a male dominated world by choosing names like “Susan B.” for Susan B. Anthony or “Madam Curie” or “Earhart” for the famed female aviator. How about “Nightingale” to celebrate the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale? There’s also “Golda” & “Thatcher” to highlight women who were world leaders in politics (Golda Meir & Margaret Thatcher). They could have used “Rosie Riveter” or “Kendeigh” for Jane Kendeigh to highlight women’s contributions to WWII. Instead, the names are so long & cumbersome most will rename their models & forget what Breyer picked. People are already talking about choosing new names. In 2-3 yrs the models will be referred to as “That brindle pinto IP” or “the pink filigree BreyerFest SM”. Of all the great names out there that are simple & easy to remember as well as fit the theme of Against The Odds why pick lyrics from pop songs? No one wants “Suddenly I Was a Lilac Sky” over “Victorious” or “Can’t Hold Us Down” over “Earhart”. Major fail on Breyer’s part. I live in Lexington & have been to every in person BF since 1992. Because of all the recent changes to BF I haven’t purchased tickets since 2019. A friend has given me one of her extra wristbands so I could go to the KHP but the vast majority of my models have been purchased at the Clarion. The last purchase I made directly from Breyer during BF was the crystal in 2021. Everything else has been purchased from the vendors at the Covered Arena or at room sales. The money I save by not purchasing the usual 3-4 BF tickets covers the mark up on the secondary market. If I wait 3-5 years I can get most BF SR’s at cost & actually save a little money. Now that Breyer no longer accepts cash & tickets are digital I don’t plan on giving them any of my business or my money. I can get what I want without going to them & if I’m patient I can get it for less money. That’s the best deal for me.
Yes, yes, yes! Can't agree more with everything you've said about the theme, model names, and how everything could have been done so much better. Since this is the first Breyerfest since I became serious about collecting, I do look forward to the experience. I doubt this will be a yearly thing for my husband and I though.
In recent years, there's typically been at least 2 or sometimes 3 50/50 splits on the SR (unannounced prior to the event) - generally these are hair, finish, or color splits. So if there are any molds you like, but not in that hair/color/finish, still keep them in consideration in case of that. Being an anniversary year, there's also the chance of smaller variants within the runs that are an alternate color, usually a deco. These could be similar in run size to Peanutine or Speos from last year, for example, or far smaller - like the anniversary "micro runs" of 25 each SR for 2014 and 30 of each SR for 2019. If decos aren't your thing to keep, there's still the off chance that if you get one, you could very easily resell or trade and get a way more expensive model :) Things may not be super exciting on the surface, but it could absolutely get more interesting once we're there.
It seems that the best Breyerfest themes have been the equine themes, such as the driving theme last year, or the racing theme in 2018. Breyer seems to go off track all over the place with a theme that is more open to interpretation. As a result, I'm just going to buy a General Admission ticket for myself and I'm looking forward to being able to hand pick the new traditional regular runs at the Breyer store. Also, the Clarion shopping is amazing and I will look for my grail but will probably end up just getting a box full of bodies for customizing.
Breyer going all over the place with general themes seems to be a common sentiment! As I replied to a different comment, if this wasn't the first Breyerfest since I got into collecting seriously, maybe I'd go with a GA ticket, but I may as well go VIP this time in case I don't return for a few years. Picking out the new RRs in person is smart, as they definitely appear to be models that will have a lot of variation in shading, etc. :)
I know they've done a mold of Snowman in the past, so maybe that's partly why they didn't want to bring it back. I do agree his story would fit the (actual) theme!
"I thought Breyer's themes would make sense!" Folks remember the Quarter Horse being the Bollywood surprise, right? Not the Marwari, in the middle of theme for India, the Quarter Horse.
Oh and! I don’t know if you have watched past Breyerfest, but they have not announced the plush yet..? I wonder why? The plush I usually why I go into the store specials anyway 😂
Right! I've heard that in some other people's BF 2024 videos. I'm not big into the plushies, so not a big deal for me, but I hope they don't skip it this year for those who do enjoy them. :)
Celebration models come with the tickets you listed! It’s a ‘free’ model basically! Also I agree with the theme thing being weird and off, but also. If you look at other themes from the past, this is a common thing Breyer does. The one that immediately comes to mind is the 2018??? (Not sure on that year) theme ‘Salute to Horse Heros’ which we all thought would be related to, well. Horse heros! And the special runs ended up being named/related to Marvel Comics super heros. They usually go off the theme some/a different direction than the obvious of the theme for the special runs since they’re just special models for Breyerfest and have never been portrait models. The limited edition models, however, are almost ALWAYS portrait models that fit the theme perfectly, which Breyer did. I agree that the names of this years models are just. Bad. But as far as fitting the theme, Breyer always does pretty ‘random’ stuff for the special runs overall.
Okay, good to know this is not too unusual for Breyer then. I agree that the limited edition/real life horses were all chosen well in regard to the actual theme, and I look forward to getting autographs for a few of them. :)
I totally agree with your point about the theme.. Don't get me wrong I have nothing wrong about feminism and girl bossing BUT all this pink whashing makes me feel ikky on breyer models especially when the theme has nothing to do with feminism and as an added malus, this makes me feel bad if anything.. Horse riding is already known to be a "girl sport" why can't they chose to empower men for once? I've been riding my whole life (I'm 24 so basically 22 years of riding) and I cac count on two hands the amount of boys and men I've met at my club who where riders (I'm from france and in the europe whe have even less male riders than in the states) All this to say that pink whashing everything.. When it comes to horses... I feel like it does more harm than good in the end for our hobby and our sport... As for the stablemates I personnally don't like them and I really don't understand why they only chose pop songs, this excludes 3/4 of the community why couldn't they choose a pop girly music like this, maybe a classical music, some rock or metal and maybe hip hop or rap or electro, something varied.. Because I feel like every release for this breyerfest is just barbie horse after barbie horse (even when you read the descriptions of some of the SRs or when you listen to the videos of the celebration model they are like (yeah this mare was saved by her feminine strenght or whatever, yeah stop it's a horse, she's a queen, but yet, she's a horse.. Her gender doesn't make who she is or what she is.. Sorry I went off rails but I'm pretty passionate about this subject.. :/
Sorry, over here in the US men are still the statistically biggest danger to women, what with rape and murder and mass shootings and family annihilation and the right to choose being taken away. All shit that will affect the young girls who like Breyers whether they like it or not. We still need feminism over here so we'll keep making a theme about it.
I hear what you're saying, and I agree that more should be done to welcome boys and men into the horse world - and that certainly includes the realm of model horses! I also think that's a great point that they could have at least chosen from a wider range of music, not just from pop and pop artists. Thanks for commenting! :)

I am always anxious to defend men instead of women in some subjects because I feel like people take it way too seriously when you don't agree with empowering girls on everysingle subjects, I'm so happy you talked about the issues with them not following the theme title wise as again.. I've had some discussions about it with other people and.. let's say some are really overly passionate about some plastic pony event title (I get it, we're all excited but respect comes first) so thanks again so much! I try to wait for a RR for a copy to paint, leaving BF models (I've been online) to those that want the colorway for their collection; none of the versions on molds I want were OF musts for me.
for the theme “Against All Odds”, they should have done an Akhal-Teke, a Przewalski’s horse, mustangs with body paint in collaboration with relevant Native American communities, and pride flag colour schemes (REAL ones, not just “uh um this is a rainbow horse, take it as Pride if u want”. altho i do love the stealth trans flag colours on Better Than Revenge’s mane and tail). also, while i LOVE the quagga and i’m so smad i won’t be able to get it in any way, shape, or form, an extinct animal isn’t exactly what i’d choose for the theme “Against All Odds” lol (yes i know new evidence suggests the quagga may have simply been a zebra coat variant and that they’re trying to breed it back. i stand by the Przewalski’s horse still being a better choice).
Those are some great recommendations! I'm happy with the quagga's inclusion, if only because I hadn't known about it until now, but hopefully they'll make a Przewalski's horse at some point. Maybe as a new RR (hint hint Breyer!)?
No, sorry, Pride does not belong in every single piece of media/merchandise. Even lesbians, gays are getting fed up with it. And more and more information is coming out from scienteists and studies regarding the study of trans children having health problems later in life, de-transitioning, (regretting it and then being left with health problems from puberty blockers) and so on and so forth. I used to want to be a guy, and it took me till 19 to finally accept what I am and not just that, but to embrace it. We need to really stop the grooming of children and Breyer's biggest audience are children. The LGBT lifestyle isn't glamourous, it's full of sadness, health problems and depression. I have no ill will to those who are LGBT, I just want kids to be kids and I want more media to be what it was originally made as. In this case horses and horse owners. Not identity politics and so forth. One of the years, a man with his steed were sent DEATH threats for being a Trump supporter so he had to cancel going for fear of his life, mind you he is an elderly man. That year Breyer bent the knee and did a Pride theme. More and more bullies are being spawned from these ideologies and it's not good to propagate that kinda behavior. Politics, ect should stay out of hobbies. Hopefully this comment doesn't get deleted because people need to wake up and smell the coffee. :(
I am just so disappointed with the direction of the theme tbh. It’s just got so confusing and also weird and not genuine. Both themes alone could have stood out and included so much more within them but now it’s completely dulled the effect of both of them. It’s all so surface level and just using something such as a pop song to cash in more and labelling it as ‘girl power’ rather than ACTUALLY caring a single bit about feminist themes. I sincerely hope Breyer doesn’t make such a huge mess of next years theme omg 😂
Seems like a lot of people are less than thrilled with the whole theme issue this year - I thought I'd be in the minority, but I no longer think that's the case! Definitely interested to see what they do in the future...
