Brian May has always been a class act. He doesnt hide the fact that he misses Freddy as doesnt Roger. They are not afraid to stick up and come to Freddy's defense. T bg ey are both class acts 100%
Respect for Brian because he won't let them skirt the AIDS issue. These men took a lot of flack because of Freddie's persona over the years. They even lost an entire US fan base at one point. They stood by principal and stood together, right or wrong in anyone's eyes. These men have true character. They let Freddie be Freddie and took him as is for the real person he was. I had a dear friend who we lost to AIDS, he was gay, he was one of the most truthful people I ever knew. I loved that man. He helped me raise my daughters while he was still alive, they had no better role model.
They never lost their US fan base because of Freddie, they lost it because of the video for i Want To Break Free as they dressed in drag and America couldn't handle that... and the video wasn't Freddie's idea it was Roger Taylor's.
Brian May has always impressed me, he is a true humanitarian. He is intelligent and articulate he knew enough about Aids even then to be able to talk freely about it.

Besides we had lots of actors and comdians who dressed as women in movies and tv shows like tom hanks and peter scolari in bosom buddies , dustin hoffman in tootsie, tony curtis and jack lemon in some like it hot to name a few... I was one of those early black american fans of Queen who was always exposed to all types of music as a kid- from soul to disco to rock to country to folk, etc.. I loved alot of British musicians and European musicians from the 70s to 80s...I had a huge collection of 33s, 45s, cassettes, and 8 tracks as a kid of all types of music through the years.Some people are just closed minded and ignorant in their views and frame of mind. I never stopped loving Queen nor Freddie and I have been a fan since I was a little girl in the 70s.
Ace High, the boys, including John Deacon were loyal to Freddie Mercury, in my humble opinion, as I said in previous comments, they all loved Freddie Mercury, and they were proud to be his friend, and he was proud to be their friend, in my humble opinion, and I 100% agree with your comment.

In the movie they still made him look as if he was very alone which is odd because of what they are saying in this interview. Plus he was not diagnosed before the live aid show in 85. He found out in 87. I guess they wanted to add a bit more drama to that iconic show. I just dont understand why they did that.
Pete the Pirate I guess to be able to include all of the major aspects of his life. Whilst still having a triumphant ending with live aid. They wanted it to be a celebration of his life & the band’s legacy. Rather than lingering on his diagnosis & untimely death. Freddie never wanted to be defined by his illness. Timelines always had to be altered to fit into the constraints of a film. As for him being alone. I guess The band too never really knew Freddie. They knew what Freddie wanted them to know. So maybe they too didn’t know the extent of his personal quiet life until they spoke to the people who were closest to him. Jim, Mary Etc.

Yes I think he loved Freddie and just can't deal with the fact that his friend is gone and I think that is also why he doesn't get involved with any thing queen based and that is vary understandable
John I think was deeply scarred by Freddie's passing....plus, he couldn't see anyone else singing Queen songs but Freddie which is why I think he retired in 1997.
Craig Ogden Brian was in a state of depression shortly after losing Freddie and his own father. He mentioned in a few interviews that he was nearly suicidal.
Can we please take a moment to appreciate Brian talking about AIDS awareness? He says such an important thing in the end of this video: it's irresponsible and dangerous to think that it's an illness that only affects drug addicts, or gay people, or those who are promiscuous, or whatever. True, some people face higher risks than others, but ultimately no one is 100% safe. Flashforward to 2018, 27 years later, and many STILL believe that they are safe from HIV and can allow to be careless simply because they don't belong to any of those groups of people. Le sigh.
@George Lincoln Rockwell Archive Problem is, a lot of people still think it's impossible and they are totally safe. You can stay away from dirty needles and be faithful to your partner all you want, but it won't help you if they go and cheat on you without using protection, get infected and then infect you. My country has HIV epidemic, you'd think people would reconsider the "Nah, it's only those filthy drug addicts who are at risk, I'm totally safe" line of thinking, when about 1% of their fellow citizens have it, but no. This isn't just about stigmatisation, this comes from lack of sexual education in general.
Brian May, and Roger Taylor are intelligent guys, and great musicians. If we didn't have people, like Brian, or Roger, in that respect, we would be living in turmoil, at that time, in 1991, especially, with the media wanting their lies printed on the front page splashed on their newspapers, thank you, Brian, and Roger.

The compassion and composure that they show in this interview is truly astounding and it really shows what sort of people they are. They’re fantastic men and wonderful allies; very few people compare honestly.

I loved the reference to Jim Hutton, Peter Freestone and Joe Fanelli. I think they are generally overlooked. The three were taking care of Freddie in the last months of his life, which had to be an incredibly difficult job, and Joe was himself sick.
Brian and Roger having to go on TV to defend their friend ONE WEEK after he died breaks my heart. Instead of grieving in privacy with their loved ones, they had to endure that s***. The press had ZERO respect!

Queen's members truly loved Freddy, as he did them. A lovely band lost the best singer and front man, Freddy Mercury. So happy they realized, as Freddy, The Show Must go On.

Roger found this interview incredibly difficult. Several times you can see it takes all his willpower not to scream. I think a few times he didn’t even agree with some small thing Brian said. And no wonder - one week after the event. It must have been so Incredibly difficult for them both. From a 2018 perspective it’s so strange to watch this & know how very different attitudes & perspectives were then, not even 30 years ago. I was just about born at this time, but not old enough to remember this & it’s hard to conceive of how the world has altered in my lifetime. I wish all the world could know the kind, generous, intelligent, witty & full of fun & life Freddie you come to understand from his music, interviews & reading about him. But, I guess maybe it’s in one way happy that I was young enough that by the time I first heard Freddie’s magnificent voice then fell in love with Queen it was already possible to know this. I’m sure it was at the time too if you ignored the tabloid press?? I wonder how Brian manages to be so very composed & to so clearly know how he wants to get across understanding & acceptance of both AIDS & homosexuality. Takes a core of steel I’m sure to be able to do that. Brian is a nice guy, but I see that metal core here & thanks be for it. And with Roger, he almost doesn’t need to speak: you can sense and see his loss & love for Freddie. Let’s all appreciate how far we’ve come in 27 years. Here’s hoping we journey as far in the next 27. And what a shame Freddie isn’t still here to give the world his wondrous music & his fabulous self still, but also to exist in the so different world we are in now: a world wherein millions love & mourn him still & ache for his loss. I think it was easier for Brian, as he wasn't as close to Freddie as Roger and John. Brian and Freddie had respect for each other and speak of each other fondly, but they were not as close as Freddie- Roger and Freddie- John. Brian is also a science man and could separate himself from the situation emotionally. AS for Roger, I can see he is upset and not handling it as well as Brian. However, I don't see what you guys see because I can't see his facial expressions as clearly as I would like to.
@@annalinestark1273 If only being a scientist meant you could separate yourself from your emotions, but I think Brian is able to adopt a public presentation of himself, so I get what you're saying. Perhaps this is in some respects the opposite of being able to separate from emotions though: maybe Brian is more able to hide his emotions. I know he has spoken of depression & perhaps sometimes this can set in deeper in part when you try to bury emotion and pretend all is well? I don't know. I digress. But yes, perhaps that's the difference here - Brian can hide his emotions and is able to be so very articulate, while I feel like I can read Roger's every thought or feeling without him having to say a word, despite the fuzzy '90's footage. I understand the comment about the closeness of Roger & John to Freddie, but you know Brian had spent a large proportion of half his life with Freddie too. Even if they didn't socialise outside of a band/work context so much & even if the other band members were better friends outside of a work context with Freddie, that doesn't mean Brian and Freddie didn't care for each other or that Freddie's death wouldn't impact Brian deeply. Of course it would. In the very late material, fairly often it seemed to be Brian and Freddie working together now I think on it too. I mean, Freddie's death certainly did then and still now has quite an effect on random strangers who never met him or even knew of him until he was already gone, even now, nearly 30 years after the fact. To lose anyone who is a large part of your actual life and there in your life day-to-day is quite another thing though - it is like losing a part of yourself. In a way, I think it is losing a part of yourself. I think we all adapt ourselves when we interact with different people and we are slightly different with every person we know. But with those we are closest to, when we lose them, we lose also the way we were when we spent time with and communicated with them, which truly is a part of our self. For all the Queen members, as well as losing Freddie and losing how they were with him, they must surely have felt they had lost a part of their musical self as never again could they create in the way they had with him. (I note that later Roger and Brian spoke that when they did create, they could know what Freddie would have said to things, hmmm.....) Not sure if I explained any of that in a way which makes any sense. Oh well. Anyway, this must have been so difficult a thing to do at this time, so soon after the event. I can't imagine.
@@myelixir Oh what I meant by using the scientist word is that, most scientists are able to look at a situation objectively. He was calm and together, because he knew he had to defend Freddie’s legacy and for him the presentation that morning must have been very important. Separating emotions was perhaps not the correct phrasing to use. I agree with your on your point of Brian “hiding emotions” --people who suffer from depression learn to hide how they really feel since depression is also still a bit stigmatised (I’m speaking for myself also). But really, who wouldn’t be depressed in Brian May’s shoes? He lost his father, his wife and a bandmate (and essentially his career as he knew it) in a very short timespan. Losing the Queen dynamic is what hit him the hardest, I think. Not just the death of Freddie per se, but rather Queen as the foursome band since he probably saw it as his lifeline during difficult times (Because I couldn’t agree more with what you said here: “For all the Queen members, as well as losing Freddie and losing how they were with him, they must surely have felt they had lost a part of their musical self as never again could they create in the way they had with him”). I didn’t mean to imply that Brian didn’t care about Freddie. Of course they were all extremely close, especially after working so close together for two decades. I was merely trying to rationalise why Roger seemed to be more emotional in this interview, while Brian was more business- like. Brian always took on the PR related issues of the band, IMO. Of course he loved and cared about Freddie, I just personally don’t view him to have been as close to Freddie as the others. Which is understandable, they had two very different personalities. I’ll be as daring as to say the only thing they truly had in common was their love for music. Other than that, they were two very different people with different tastes, but loved each other regardless. It must have been very difficult indeed. What must have been so terrible is the fact that the British press did not paint Freddie as the legendary friend that they knew. I also think they became especially close to Freddie and protective of him closer to his death, seeing and hearing what people say about someone you care for deeply must be so terrible. In that regard, I’m glad they had the opportunity to set things straight even if it was difficult to do.

It's odd to think about how it must have felt like a musical death too to the surviving members of Queen. I wonder whether the band ever feel guilt in current times in a musical sense? They must have felt they had lost Queen and so a large part of their musical-selves at this time, but in fact instead Queen are, if not more popular - since they sold out stadiums back then, I feel they have certainly become more respected in the decades since this time than they were during their career. I've no idea how, for Freddie, posthumous sales compare to those in his lifetime. But there's something which must feel strange about it to the rest of the band. In a strange way, it must surely in part feel like surviving your own death as what they have gotten to experience is in some way very directly what they might have experienced to their oeuvre of work, had they themselves died. Maybe that's one reason John Deacon stepped away so fully. I am with him. I have no interest in hearing Queen with another singer, yet also I respect Brian and Roger for keeping Freddie alive in many ways. But there is something eerie and ghostly about it. Every time they play, every day, they must still feel something. They've all lived an entire adult life again now. It's strange to think on. @@myelixir No, ramble on! I could talk about Queen all day long. I agree with you. I love each member and what they brought to the table dearly. But I have very contradictory feelings towards how Queen are still performing and how they are honoring Freddie in many ways still. If I utter them, I might get slammed for it but it's in my nature to think the things I do. I'm a realist and some things just seem logic to me, some might say I'm a pessimist, only choosing to see/think the bad side in this. But yeah I'll say what I think of it all.Firstly, yes losing a dear friend and co-musician must've been devastating, but losing their musical selves must've been soul numbing. Hence, why I think a lot of their present day actions are motivated by keeping their musical selves of that time period alive. There seems to be two sides to the whole Queen still touring thing. Firstly, there are the bunch who respects Roger and Brian for keeping Queen alive and still supports their endeavor. The second is the bunch who does not see the point of it as they are essentially a tribute band. I fall in the second category. First of all, I am not a 100% convinced that John Deacon retired and that was that. I believe the remaining three members had a MASSIVE FALLING OUT. MASSIVE. Originally, in 1992 when Brian was still solo touring, John and Roger Taylor planned on continuing with or without Brian. Something made Brian change his mind, and that's where I think things went terribly wrong. If you read in between the lines, Freddie and Deacon used to be the guys with similar musical tastes and supported each other in what they did. Brian and Taylor tag teamed in this regard. Brian more so, Brian's musical tastes are heavy metal and hard rock-ish. Brian, as I've noticed through watching several interviews that other than Freddie, was usually the one who had the last say in how things must happen. I don't know what happened, but clearly there was a major disagreement that resulted in John Deacon retiring. You hear that the guys say John just wants a private life away from the spotlight, but you also hear them saying things like John Deacon is a money grabber and a sociopath (WTF?). Roger and Brian both stated that they never hear from Deacon. Apparently they reach out to him regarding major Queen decisions, but John is not known to respond. Does this seem normal to you? You spend 20 + years together, and suddenly there's no contact? Now if things ended well between them, why would they make passive-aggressive remarks like John being a sociopath? The general consensus seems to be that Deacon took it the worst when Freddie died. I believe that -- but why would the band ties be so broken? Depressed and anxious people do sometimes isolate themselves from their loved ones, but it just feels like there’s more to the story. Why was John initially keen on continuing, and then suddenly withdrew? I know he didn’t agree with Robbie Williams.. perhaps Roger and Brian teamed up against him. According to Brian & Roger, Deacon has given them his blessing to do with Queen music as they please. With this in mind, I should probably assume that Deacon would have spoken up if this was not true. BUT I should also assume that he is apparently severely depressed and anxious and speaking up publicly about a thing like that would be incredibly hard to do. Anyway. With my Deacon issues aside- Personally I fall into the second camp because Queen for me is: Brian May, Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and John Deacon. Anything other than that is not Queen. I’m not interested in hearing their music unless it comes with Freddie Mercury’s voice. So you have got a band that now only has two remaining members + Singer. Why still continue under the Queen name? Why not start with a new name? That annoys me. Because it is simply about attracting the same crowd & Makes these talented musicians seem like retired rockstars who are desperately clinging to their musical selves of 30 years ago. Secondly, I’m very protective of FM, because he’s my absolute favourite. I love love love that they honor Freddie still, 27 years later. But, my cynical self gets the feeling sometimes that the FM name gets exploited. Let’s face it, Queen would never have been so big if it wasn’t for FM. And to keep honoring FM, keeps the FM fans by their side. It keeps them popular, people WANT to see that FM is being remembered. I’m not saying it is so. They all obviously loved each other and respected each other. But there’s also a lot of issues, and everything should not be taken at face value. They’re not perfect. And I’m also saying, not all of their actions are purely out of nostalgia and selflessness. I absolutely agree, It must feel ghostly. Like a part of them is permanently missing. They must miss him so much. I’m so very sorry for this essay. I don’t have any RL people to talk to about this fantastic band.
Freddie was more than gay man that died from AIDS. He was a precious soul that did not deserve to leave here the way that he did. We still are fascinated with his life and the things that he did after all these years because of his awesome talent. Freddie was pure magic and the heartbeat of the group. Queen is not the same and never will be without him. It is incumbent among May and Taylor to always recognize Freddie in all that they do in regards to the group.
Well done, Brian May, and Roger Taylor, for spreading the love, between you, and Freddie Mercury, and you raised awareness about the AIDS stigma. You have turned a negative thing, into a positive. Roger and Brian, are so good and so loyal , down to earth, classy and intelligent human beings! We are so lucky to have them! The way they were so calmly talking and discussing about Freddie's death and AIDS , this shows how much of a gentlemen they are! I understood everything when i heard "the miracle" album: scandal, was it all worth it, rain must fall... It was so desperately clear to me. With a friend of mine, we wrote to the Queen fan club, asking for Freddie's health, getting the response "It's all ok": we rationally didn't believe it, but yet we hoped it could be true.
Brian May, from a School Math Teacher and famous rock star. People, dreams can come true. I just wish I was born 20 years earlier. I would of probably had him as my teacher at Stockwell School at the time. I'm so Jealous of those who met him before he became famous.
I watched both parts of this interview and I love how they stood up for Freddie. It’s pretty obvious to me that they were really close to him. And listening to what Brian said about the AIDS, I remembered about Ryan White, a boy who died at a young age because of AIDS, which he got during a blood transfusion. He was suffering from hemophilia and that required many blood transfusions. So yeah, Brian was totally right about that.

Freddie was an incredible, beautiful, creative, awesome, composer and singer!!! Brave and intelligent... he was capable to build a bridge between rock world... and opera world. Not just with bohemian rhapsody (such a masterpiece), also with composing and recording with Monserrat Caballé. What an adventure it was!!! Make music was the goal and pourpose of he’s life..., until the end... even sick and frágil... even in pain..., what a courageous man!! He loved intensely and sought to be loved ... and suffered for it. I bet Brian, Roger and John miss him so much. How could you not? Aside from the fact that Queen would never be Queen again, beside the business aspect, they lost a dear and loved friend. Poor sweet sweet Freddie. I remember him dying, I was like 9 or 10, and Queen being everywhere and realizing just how amazing their music is. I felt so sad then that I wasn't able to appreciate them while Freddie was alive. I wish he could have seen 2018 with us.

Freddie was a joy a gift a love from God. In the last few months before his death people were so mean to him cause he had HIV. First he did not ask for the HIV infection it was given to him. He was so kind loving caring and wanted good in the world and to listen to the best rock music ever we say God save the queen I don't say it for her I say it for the rock group QUEEN!!!!!!! Could you imagine what he would be doing for music today my God the world would sound wonderful. I just hope that he did not suffer from the HIV infection to much cause he was so good loving caring and a beautiful man I would not have wanted him to suffer he did not deserve that. And it's sad cuz I don't think people want to understand and learn that HIV can happen to anyone who has sex or uses hard drugs with needles. I never cared about what he had cause the voice queen had over powered his disease his love and hopes and dreams were more real before his death than ever. My Freddie rest in peace always.
