Brian Baker has been a role model of mine since I was in Elementary school. His work in Dag Nasty, Minor Threat and Bad Religion is something to be admired by everyone
I agree. While I prefer to stay in E standard there is no reason to paint yourself into a corner. Lagwagon uses drop tunings on several of their songs and they are a pretty quintessential punk rock band. Bad Religion has perfected their own sound, but we don't need every other punk band trying to emulate them. As you said, punk is whatever the fuck you want it to be.
yes, never tune down in punk rock. im not a metal fan, apparently thats something that they do and hey more power to em. love his attitude towards the music. glad he doesnt feel that he has to do crazy solos, meat and potatoes. love bad religion, love dag nasty. prefer sg's to les pauls however, and also telecasters. i wish mike watt had videos like this for bass.
hahah love the part "I mean theres 1000 better guitar players than me, however none of them are in Bad Religion..." =) oh man , what I wouldnt give to be able to play just 1 song with them on stage! would be so freakin sweeet
Brian; how much do you ask for a private lesson. Í´d like to learn to play all the great stuff of Dag Nasty (including Epitaph stuff and with Shawn Brown): Leo is dead it is not the end of the world; great lyrics on Field Day. I imported some copies of these from Margit (We Bite Records) even though I prefer that Giant cd version (including the Ruts; All Ages Show and so on) Cheers but no beers! I am straight edge for this life as well as my wife! Be blessed!
If you play guitar and listen to them you should be able to figure them out. Like he said there are 1000s of better guitar players. The hook is its simple and anyone can play it. Most of their stuff is centered around the 4th to 9th frets strings 5 and 6. Power chords like he said.
I think he answered his own question about the drop D tuning. He doesn't get why you'd drop the 6th string down to D, but then admits you only need 4th-6th strings to play this kind of music. So drop the 6th string to D and your 3 string barre chord is easier.
@lastangelsofrock how loud do you need it? ha ha. honestly dude bugera makes decent tube heads for the money. for the money they actually do compare to marshall (sound wise)
hey guys help me, if I play only 3 strings on a barre chord then what's the difference between a barre chord and a power chord in this case. Sorry for stupid question)
then i don't get the purpose of him talking about this stuff.)))) Why doesn't he just say "play power chord instead of a barre chord and u will be a hero in this kinda music"? It's even easier to play (for begginers expecially ugh... I just remember how much pain physical and psychological x))))) i had when i was learning my first barre chords and combining them together half a year ago):))) May be i'm just stupid)))))) Anyway thanks for the reply;) Sorry for possible mistakes. I'm Russian, English is not my native language of course.
i don't know. maybe he tried to explain what a powerchord is... but in my understanding it's the same thing :) yeah i remember it too, it almost quit when it came to barre chords ;) but then there was a moment when it just worked out and then you can play anything :) you're welcome :) No probleme, english isn't my first language either and this is youtube, so i don't really care about grammar or spelling ;)
+spasibo3006 I think power chord is a new thing in the sense of terminology. I know alot of guitar instructors naming power chords differently which I always found odd so it could very well be that the name power chord is more recent "established" term.
+Marjan Crncec May be you are right) May be it's not a musical term or smth. Yes you right about different names for it for instance in my native language there is no such term as "power chord" i heard it's been called as "five chord", "pentachord" and just "the fifth"
And what governs the fact that when you combine them you can create a "Rocket"? Physics. Doesn't matter if you think physics is "no good" or you think the laws are bullshit, they still govern every part of your life, from every move you make to every shit you take.
Damn those guitars for being so expensive though! I just got my first guitar and I tried to play like this one guy in a video(he did it in slomo) and it sounded like total shit! Nothing like it, my cheap beginner guitar doesn't sound good at all, idk bout you but it makes learning a lot harder for me
he got 100 Les Paul Customs after that. the gibson manager probably fired 10 responsible employees after realizing that brian was not on the gibson endorsment list.
"There are thousands of people who play guitar better than I am.. than I do. However, none of them are in Bad Religion" He's implying that he's the best guitar player in Bad Religion? He's definitely the fastest, but Hetson is just as good at making his solos sound good.
this dosn't sound right? theres no doubt you can hear a fourth note in bad religion songs....otherwise you wouldn't know that the chord was a major or minor chord would you? say like songs like 'better off dead'......that 1st chord is definately minor so you can't say it's only a 3 note bar chord.
+peter gibson Most times you can tell by the function of the cords. We don't think about that much. For example when you're in C-Major and you play an E-Power-Chord, it will feel like a Minor. Also there is the vocal melody and yes somtimes the make use of it, but really few times.
I love Bad Religion and I think Brian is pretty good, but he always plays the same. I know it's "just punk rock", but Bad Religion isn't just any punk band. BR has 3 guitar players and its disappointing that all 3 play barre chords at the same time. He does the same solo every song. A lot of potential really....
