Brian Gulland is an English classically trained musician who has specialized in creating medieval and Renaissance music most notably as a member of the band Gryphon. After graduating from the Royal College of Music in London, Brian hooked up with fellow RCM student Richard Harvey, Graeme Taylor and Dave Oberle to form the aforementioned Gryphon in 1972. Playing such non-traditional instruments as the bassoon and the krumhorn, Mr. Gulland and the band released 5 albums during the 70’s, splitting up in 1977. Fast forward to 2009 and a reunion one-off performance. Then came 2 new albums, one in 2018, the first in 41 years, and a second in 2020. There have also been several compilation releases over the years. Brian has also been a member of The New Scorpion Band, done a little acting and enjoys playing cricket.

Glad to see Brian talking about the French Years and "Fonds de Tiroirs". After all, I met him in Florence while touring with Malicorne.

Well, that was an interesting interview! Gryphon were the first band I ever saw live - as a 16 year old in the mid 1970s. The second time I saw them as at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London (in 1975). Then I didn't see them again until they did some gigs at the Union Chapel at Islington (London again). I think now I've see them 7 times in all - and will see them again in my home town of Canterbury this coming November. They have genuinely been one of my most favourite bands for 48 years....and counting! Love them!

Hi Simon, I really identify with your devoted following of Gryphon - I first saw them supporting Camel in 1975 (The Snow Goose Tour) at Leeds Uni, and a couple of years later at Leeds Poly when Raindance was released. I was awestruck by their musicianship and sense of fun. We shared the same space at the Union Chapel - it was really special that Midnight Mushrumps closed to a standing ovation. Cheers, Pete

Good morning Greg and very very compliment for this brilliant and beautiful interview to the magnificent Brian Gulland! I love Gryphon music and I listened every albums even the last two albums. In my opinion that music, along with these special musicians, it will be always the magic and unique Music, so thanks again for this interview to get to know more deeply sir.Brian and those period. I link, if you don't mind, one of my little musical things maybe trying of remember some nostalgic aspects of that music that I unfortunately couldn't listen live at that time. All the best. Luca from Tuscany.
