Born in Britain, art critic Brian Sewell (1931-2015) wrote for the "London Evening Standard" and made numerous television appearances throughout his distinguished media career. He was known for his outspoken and erudite reviews of art.
TRANSCRIPT: The very last thing that you could ever admit was that you were a poofter. People got called poofters who were… it was just an insult, really. It wasn’t an observation. It wasn’t an accurate identification. You know, if your hair was slightly long, or you tripped over your boots or something, you know, poofter would be as readily the word that came to people’s minds as any other. But the one thing you could never admit was that you were in the company of other boys whom you might want to fuck.
And of course, you played along with it. You pretended. So your conversation never betrayed you.
And I had a pigskin wallet, of which I was rather proud. It was a kind of pale, shiny thing, and I carried a condom in it. Condoms in… so long since I’ve seen a condom, I don’t know how they are now produced, but they used to be in tiny little square packets, and they were rolled in a ring. And I had this in my wallet, and the process of wear and tear... pulling it out of your pocket... this ring shape came through on the pigskin. And people would say, 'What’s that?' And I’d say, 'That’s my French letter'. Which somehow convinced them that there I was, sort of, ready for any maiden who might throw herself at me. And so… so it, I don’t think, ever occurred to anybody that I was queer. There were temptations. They had to be resisted.

Brian Sewell was some character. The world was a blander place when he died.

Saying ‘poofter’ and ‘f**k’ in that accent is so funny somehow. The story about the condom in the wallet is so poignant.

Indeed, no one like him anymore, especially in the world of art criticism. RIP Brian

He's totally right about the use of the word 'poofter' years ago. When I was at boarding school, anyone being a bit weird or seemingly a raving homosexual by the way they spoke or looked, would be referred to as a 'poofter'.

I remember him on a TV series he did, I think he was abroad somewhere. The sewers had overflowed and he was knee deep in the sloppy stuff laughing his head off. It was all the more hilarious for him being so posh. I thought he was a great guy. One of a kind.

So sorry that humans aren't evolved enough yet to be 'over' the different types of sexuality that exist. One day perhaps Brian. Thank you for your candour and what a brave man you are to have taken a lifetime of ridicule for something that was never your choice.

My old man fought WW2 for the duration in tanks. I asked him about gays in the forces back then and he said 'Oh yes, we all knew who the nice boys were'. So perhaps Sewell is deluding himself somewhat. Or maybe it is different in the middle of a war.

Among the ranks, officers were seen as a different species. They could have all been "queer" or not, as many straight working class men would have never met an openly homosexual male. Sewell's subsequent career in the arts would have marked him out as gay, but in his youth he may simply be viewed as posh, and beyond normal codes of behaviour.

I would have thought that Brian would have been given regular beatings if it had occurred to them, so seeing as he’s probably way more intelligent than you I would imagine that he thought ,and was ,right. You never saw or heard him in 1952/4. You’re judging him by today’s standards, many years after his NT

The 'world' is a sad and ugly place. Way too may people are quite happy to denigrate and bully people who do not fit their desired stereotype. I do my best to avoid the world, but it keeps trying to catch up with me.

@@XX-gy7ue I will have to think about that, I learned more about camouflage than athletics, and I haven't yet worked out what 'succeeding' really means. However, I learned many years ago that joining in with the bullying to fit in was not for me.
