Love how Luke is the most hyped person there, even more so than his brother it looks like. Awesome pair of brothers. The genetics in that famiy is something else!!
I think Brian can still be at the absolute top but he has too many distractions in his life and lacks the real 100% focus he needs. Also recovering from his injury at Arnold's probably cost him a lot of time and energy.
@@Coffeetime110 Brian isn't that old, he's only 37 which is prime time for strongman. Once he is in his 40s then he is past his prime age wise, but now with serious dedication and no injuries he should still be up there.
Tom Stoltman is one of the top three in the world at moving weight - loading, carrying, atlas stones etc. If he can put 10kg on and improve his static strength he can be on the podium within a year or two no doubt. Grip and o/head training.
I think he already knew he wouldn't win anymore and like some of u said already, he looked tired, disappointed and just very sad. He's not the youngest Brian he used to be, age is growing for him
@@fancyleaf if you watch the video Brian uploaded to his channel today,he says he tweaked his bicep on the 4th stone. I forget exactly what the injury was, not a full tear, but being able to rack the 5th stone is impressive considering that.
This is the first time I'll admit it, but I do think Brian's age is starting to show. He's still absolutely a top contender. I'm NOT saying he should think about retiring. I honestly believe he IS still improving physically, BUT the competition is also improving so fast, I'm not sure he will be able to keep up and get that 5th title. I wish he would, but I think this year was his last hope for #5. I hope I'm wrong. I love the guy as a competitor. But just facing reality, I think his reign at the very, very top is done. I hope he keeps competing though, continuing to push guys and push the sport in general. When he finally does retire, hopefully he can continue as a mentor for guys like Mateusz (whom he's shown interest in helping). Great props to him though. He's definitely one of the greatest legends of all time.
Seems like his main issue, especially in WSM, is speed. Brian might be able to continue getting STRONGER, but he seems to be getting slower. Seems like he has a better shot at the Arnold because those are heavier events usually.
I know what you mean, Shaw was to strongman what Semmy Schilt was to kickboxing, his giant stature was just too much for anyone else to even contend with. Even prime Zydrunas struggled to hang with him half the time. he could very well win another WSM in the future, it's just lifting weights, he just needs to put it all together, but he definitely isn't looking like the killer he once was.
TBT I think his qualifying battle with Oleksi Novikov really took it out of him. I mean that kid made him work in every single event and if you compare that to the other top qualifiers today. Brian literally did twice the work they did. So I think Brian is perfectly fine but I don’t think he was expecting Novikov to bring that kind of heat from the get go
Remember that Brian also injured his hamstring at the Arnold. WSM is really not THAT far out from when that incident happened. The fact that he's even in it is crazy and shows how much conviction he has. Brian is a god among men.
@@dylanekstrand8571 Oh really? Tell me about it. I know he's one of the all time greats but we have 2019 and last competition he have won is Arnold 2017. After injuries and in his actual shape expecting him to win wsm is ridiculous
@@makarena5569 There is a big difference between age catching you+strong competion and being overrated af like you say ... He won the title 4 times against the likes of Thor/Zydrunas/Hall and has been in 11 finals (most of them in a raw) so definitly overrated dude...
@@jgespana866 Ok, i just meant that people expected from him too much this year. You don't have to tell me what he's achieved because I am big fan of him.
I am the bggest Brian Shaw fanboy......but something seemed off. Stones are one of his best events. The lost grip on the hold....I'm concerned about his health
Brian finished 3rd in the stones folks - Tom killed him as expected. Maxime also beat him by 6 seconds. WSM can only give so much help to one athlete. Without help Brian would have been back in 5th
A lot of little things. Being on the road so much, building up his business, losing a little focus. The hamstring. Rumour of a tear in the final. Problems with the heat and recovery. Slow, deliberate lifting style not well suited to speed events with lighter weights. Being pushed so hard by Novikov. All adds up. He just looked too big for this year's speed event. Doesn't matter how strong you are if you're exhausted before the last stone. Hope the Arnolds are heavier next year and he crushes it. But even if he retires now, a legend.
Yeah I think the fact that he is focusing so much on the business side of things is a big factor. He is not even 40 yet so I don't see why people obsess so much about his age, Big Z was 39 when he won is last WSM title, Brian is only 37 I believe.
I think he's too heavy personally it makes it very difficult to win power and speed based events. Having said that he didn't do well in the grip event either so he definitely didn't perform to his best.
I love Brian Shaw I wish him out of everybody to have won, but you can tell his age is really catching up, whenever he retires I hope he knows he had nothing else to prove.
And that's exactly what I have been saying since he got injured. Age is catching up and he needs to retire before he starts placing even worst in the future competitions.
Ive never ever ever seen brian struggle on the 5th stone. In 2017 when he had a torn hamstring he still did it. Something was def wrong for him today. Also all the other qualifying heats got a pass. Shaw was pushed to limits by novikov. Comparing what he had to do to get first place vs the others is a joke
JeepWoodsFun Not saying he would have won even if he was at full health, but he tore his brachialis in competition. I don't know if he'll ever win again, but quit saying it has to do with age. Shaw is simply very injury prone due to his weight, he should lose a couple of pounds to compete better in the movement events, which dominated this year's WSM. Shaw haters just leave, you guys bring a bad mood to this sport for no reason. No one is making excuses for the guy, we're just stating the facts.
@@CloudCrash thor had an injury on the first event and managed to get third place. brian shaw only tore his muscle in the very last event on the last obstacle. all i hear is excuses...
JeepWoodsFun I told you I don’t think he would have won. The point is that he did much better in the heats and seemed off on Sunday. I’m just saying I don’t think it’s his age that’s holding him back. So keep repeating the same tired “all I hear are excuses” line acting like you’d tell Brian, the second greatest strongman of all time and one of the most down to earth, to his face, to suck it up and get over it, you sheep.
It saddens me to see Shaw The Gentle Giant underperforming like this. And a lot of people think he is to old and weak. Number 1: Shaw is not to old. Number 2: Shaw is still strong as a bear. But he needs a new plan. Get a little lighter, and work on speed and agility. I hope to see you back next year, Brian. The Vikings salute you, champion.
I've been watching him in British events for years. He's 2m tall, 2m+ wingspan 155kg. A proper unit. 10-15kg more bodyweight and he'll be right up there with the very best.
i feel really bad for brian. but hes won 4x and been in the finals 11x. its like watching the patriots in the superbowl every year. eventually its nice to see other folks win. lol
Mad respect for Shaw !!!! He went for the win on the last stone ....the gamble didn’t pay off but he gambled and that’s ballz! Tom took that extra break and Shaw wanted to capitalize on it ! Bad ass last leg !!!! Respect !!
I like Shaw a lot and consider myself a fan, but I think it's time for him to retire now. Sure, he could go on a few more years and qualify for WSM, but I just don't see him winning another title. 4xWSM is amazing, and he's already a legend of the sport, but he could pass down his experience to others and push the sport forward in other ways now.
I feel bad for Brian. First he tears his hamstring at the Arnold's and now get's 5th place at a WSM where nobody expected him to place outside of top 3.
He ended up a little lower than he should have. Thor, Licis and Kiel were always gonna be strong and more likely to split top spots. Brian should have come 4th but Caron was in his greatest shape ever. We all love Brian but he's had a bad year while the others have been getting much stronger (Thor, Kiel and especially Licis, who came second and almost had Thor at Arnold's).
Brian could barely look at his opponents when they beat him, he wasn't right I think he just realised he wasn't as prepared as he should have been. Watching Brians youtube gave me the impression he isn't as hungry for it anymore. He has realised he can make a ton more money doing guest appearances and tv shows etc he also realises that having his 5th wsm would increase his earning potential. As I said I really do think he just didn't train enough or hard enough I just get the vibe that he put in token, albeit heavy token training sessions. He had a lot of distractions behind the scenes interefering with his training and not to mention that whenever he gets together with hall and oberst its just one big larking around session ( which I enjoy watching ) So yeah all this took its toll with Brian believing his own hype and underestimating the competition who all want it more. In saying this I feel Brian still has one more in him but he'd need to sort his life out to allow him to do nothing else but train for wsm.
@Μανος Δερμιτζακης yup I agree it's the same with Connor McGregor in the ufc he has and is making so much money he doesn't need to fight. 4 wsm titles is nothing to be ashamed about he has nothing left to prove to anyone.
He did seem obsessed with it in the heats. He looked on fire, I guess Novikov pushed him more then he wanted & he got tired or it just wasn't his day in the final
Brian has been at WSM 11 years won 4 titles and this year i feel was his last chance at 5 titles his age is slowing him down, time to retire before he hurts himself and get his weight down to save his knees. I say what i do because i have the most respect for him.
Idc what anyone says about Brian even though seeing him lose But fr if u been watching Brian u would see how big his forearms are 19-20 inches, and 24-25 inch biceps!
Its going the same way with brian as with zeaviscas (dont know know how to type it) he was the best every year. But then just dropped down to the buttom in a couple of years. Then just disapear
See how tom never needs the arm wraps or a t shirt , pure animal ,gnna be v hard to beat tom in the future now he has 1titel,this guy has at least another 3/4 in him, hopefully shaw can sneak a faith in soon aswell 👍🏻
give the guy a fucking break. how many years have you lifted cars? age is real factor. hes still a great competitor. stop trying to diminish what he's accomplished over the years.
@@michaelcanas1046 Obviously he's stronger than every single person that comments on this. My reply was more towards "almost winning WSM" he was a long ways off
@@michaelcanas1046 Honestly I was quite surprised at how well Martins did. I didn't think he'd win, thought he'd make 2nd or 3rd but god damn he was impressive
I heard from the grapevine Brian tore a muscle in his left arm during the finals?, wonder if it was during this event?and if he really did get injured..?
Eddie Hall was the problem a real freakin dick always getting stupid with brian ! Brian could not focus ! I will destroy eddie hall next time i see him !. Lol.
Thing wsm was very movement based, good for the smaller guys, brian had no chance against licis in movement, it's a shame that wsm is the lightest of strongman contests
@@ayrtonowen2703 in case you haven't noticed, Wsm has always been a "lighter" contest. I mean one year they made the guys run around a track. Quit bitching about something that has always been the same. Strength and movement based.
@@benji3008 do not get confused with passion and dedication to the sport alright? You have to accept the fact that he is facing with younger competitors that they coming way stronger than he is alright??? Now is easy to tell that age? Is catching up. He lost easily against mateusz on the lift grip event. Didn't him??? So what is that tells you??? Now you come up with the conclusion alright?
@@aquilestroya2100 your an idiot, you think just because he can't win that he shouldn't compete? That's stupid. And next year, (if he competes) Even if he does drop more positions, he's still in top 10 in the world. Why would a top 10 athlete not compete? Just because you can't win doesn't mean you shouldn't try.... Only losers like you think that way😉
What's this mourning for Brian?4 times wsm,why is it so necessary the 5th?It's over, other guys will steal the show from now and on and that's more interesting and fair in a way.
