Absolutely unbelievable! You can't measure or use templates when tuning a Xaphoon, since the inside diameters and lengths are all different. Instead, Brian Wittman (the instrument's inventor, and to this day still the only one making them) eyeballs where the holes should go and pokes them with a hot iron. Concert tuned in less than 2 minutes!

This is awesome! He's so good! (Btw, technically this is closer to a clarinet than a sax, because it have a tubular structure and not a cone structure. The more you know!)

Amazing. I was wondering how on earth you take a non-standard piece of bamboo and create an instrument precisely tuned to standardised notes. Now I've watched you do it I still have no idea, but it was incredible to watch. I'm waiting for my (ABS) Xaphoon to arrive here in the UK and very excited about it

@@SR-qe7rj I ordered directly from xaphoon.com. it was delivered by FedEx and I tracked it from somewhere called Hawthorn (I think) in California. It arrived in the UK within 3 days. I didn't pay any tax (it was just below the tax threshold)

I'd add that I'm having a blast with it. Having never played a reeded instrument in my life before I am able to access all the lower register notes, play some simple tunes and (at a push) access the lowest note or two on the upper register after just a few days of playing. the latter is tough and I certainly can't access it readily (to use in a tune, for example), but hopefully I will get there

I played with Stan for years before I left the mainland. We were art students together, and played in the Upepo Band, and his own Stan Wood Boptet. Amazing visionary! Last time I saw him was in 2006, and we played then. Sadly, he died a few years ago. Great to hear his name. A true genius!!

Could somebody tell Brian Wittman that there is a problem with his Maui Xaphoon site. Anyone with Windows 7 may have problems registering on the forum and contacting Brian vis email. It appears that Windows 7 hasn't got a "default email" facility! Which is causing the problem!

Brian: I have a Xiao bamboo flute, 8 hole. Top where you blow is one inch, I wanted to put an alto sax mouthpiece on it, but it is too large for any sax mouthpiece. Could you make me a mouthpiece that would turn my Xiao into a saxophone sound? Or, is this impossible?
