Brice Turang is an elite defender, but why does StatCast dislike him?

At the time of recording, Brice Turang is a top 3 second baseman in Defensive Runs Saved, but a league average second baseman in StatCast's Fielding Run Value and Outs Above Average.
What gives? This video is to show you how Statcast's computers read defense into probabilities based on opportunity time and sprint speeds.
Sometimes the eye test doesn't match what the stats say, and that's okay!

Can you win an Oscar for a 15 minute RU-vid video?

Ooa is great for outfielders but I prefer drs for infielders. This video exemplified that perfectly.

Only good players have this “problem”. Brice has turned his play around from being an above average defender to all around all star, in one year. This brewers team wouldn’t be where it is without him, period.

I was watching this video at the same time as the brewers game and Brice Turang just hit a grand slam. Nice coincidence. 😄

Turang will never get the respect he deserves because he isn't a cocky player like most players would be if they were that good at 2B. He's just a humble individual.

Turang has done a complete 180 with the stick. Really impressive! He will be an all star in no time at this trajectory.

Probably not, because the fans still love average, home runs and OPS more than defense, runs scored, stolen bases and on base percentage. And that's 100% ok 👍 For winning a world series, a team full of elite defenders with consistent bats on balls and drawing walks is far more valuable in big moments than a team full of below average defenders with home run pop

You definitely earned a subscriber here! Not just because the Brewers are and have been my all-time favorite Baseball Team my entire life. I became a Baseball fanatic during the mid 70's. My Dad signed me up for Little League Baseball in 77 or 78, and since I grew up in Milwaukee, we went to a LOT, repeat A LOT of Brewers games!!!! After games kids could wait outside for the players. The parking lot wasn't blocked off or fenced-in. So I was able to meet players like Robin Yount, Paul Molitor, Gorman Thomas, Ben Oglive, Jim Gantner, Charlie Moore, Lary Sorenson, Moose Haas, Billy Travers, Pete Ladd, Don Money, Sixto Lezcano, Sal Bando, Cecil Cooper(not a big fan of signing after games), and my all-time favorite player Mike Caldwell. I also was SO LUCKY/BLESSED, because I was also able to meet one other person. I person who's been with the Brewers organization for decades. Bob Uecker, and he was one of best. He always was willing to stop and sign autographs for kids. He'd even crack jokes. I remember once he asked a kid if he wanted him to sign someone else's name since he wasn't "famous"? Never once did any kid ever say yes. Bob Uecker is legendary. At 8,9 years old, kids adored him. Sorry went off on a tangent. Your channel is very well done. You have exceptional knowledge of what your talking about. I've enjoyed your videos, and I'll continue to watch for them. However in reference to your topic. The Brewers players have often been "overlooked", underappreciated, and even disrespected at times. I really dislike this term, Small Market, but it's true. Teams and subsequently their players get little to no respect or love, unless your hitting .320+, hitting 40-50 homeruns with 110-140 RBI's a year the odds of you getting respect or even noticed is slim to none, and that is ridiculous. Kolten Wong had a exceptional year of fielding. A easy pick for a Gold Glove Award, yet he was passed over. Sal Frelick again doesn't have the gaudy. 320+ batting average, or 30-40 homeruns, however his fielding has been absolutely phenomenal. He has been clutch however whenever the Brewers need a hit, a steal, or a an RBI he usually comes through. Let others overlook these guys, and hopefully they can shock the heck out of everyone cone season's end.

Why do I feel when I was a kid watching baseball, it was way less complicated. I still have no idea what some of there things he’s talking about.

Because stat cast isn't a person who understands the complexities of baseball and has situational instincts. A stat will never be able to tell the whole story or take all the factors into accounts. Stats are just convenient for all the new score guys that don't know the guy but want to learn a little bit.

Bro breaking down stats is not baseball, it's baseball now days but it's really sad how individualized the game has becomes because there are a lot baseball situations and strategies that are getting lost in this stat bull shit
