Just a note of appreciation fellas. I've done a bit of brickwork off and on over 30 years. Never time served, just asked or watched those who looked efficient and produced high quality end results, and then applied it to my own needs. It's good to see you and others from different trades and crafts passing on their experience and methods via RU-vid. I'm not sure some people appreciate how much time video recording and editing takes on top of the day job too! There are some new houses being built near me at the moment. Hadn't liked the attitude of the trowels on the job but looking at their output up close it's shocking how poor the end results are: variable bed thicknesses (despite using profiles and gauging!); very poor pointing and brushing; obvious brick colour changes because pallets are lifted by fork but never mixed by the hods to spread clay colour variations. Just shoddy and quite literally slapdash. Keep it going gents quality and enthusiasm shines through!

Thanks for that pal , so far I’m enjoying the editing side , I’m picking it up fast having started from scratch in April . It’s very rewarding getting a video finished and uploading it , I can also pick up any bad habits we are getting 😏. Working on site I have seen many “ bricklayers “ come and go . Some of the worst I’ve seen built our house 15 years ago , awful brickwork and the house is out of square which really pisses me off a lot . Thanks for watching and for the kind comments 👍🏼

@@SteveAndAlexBuild I can imagine how the out of square thing riles you. It isn't difficult to get it set out square, 3,4,5 ffs but hey hoh, practical trigonometry probably not "relevant" enough for today's kids? Quartermaster's warning: "remember lads your kit is built by the lowest bidder!" The scary thing is some of these houses I mention will be £700k+ and built by a developer with a "good" reputation apparently...

@stephenholmes2399
@stephenholmes2399 5 лет назад
Problem when using full fill with an extension like that (which is mainly glass) , there is no way that building would have enough UV value unless you put 600mm up in the roof to compensate. I've took loads of houses/extension down over the years and everyone one that had full fill, the top two courses of block had no inso left as the full fill just sags down over time especially as it draws moisture through the brickwork. Rock wool UV value is half that of cavity bats. I'd only use it if I had to build overhand as I'd be doing the face work first. But we would use insulated plaster boards on that wall to bring the UV value back up. That's it standard building regs across the UK for sure. If your not working off architect's drawings with UV values worked out then your shooting blind. Polystyrene floor inso and full fill in such and open build isnt enough. Also vertical damps are defo building regs for all brickwork extensions. Not sure where your inspector is getting his info. Can check your local regs on line. Cutting cavities out isnt good but a break with damp is needed. We build conservatory bases allot for a local company. Even they all need vertical damps, plastic trays with lead over the roof, 110 cavities with celotex. Same regs as extensions.

Chris Whitehead . If you watch part 4 nobody is hiding anything . The wall is 4 m long which means there is a 3/4 in it somewhere . I decided to put it in the middle under the window so it’s there are only 8 under the window and 2 above , would you rather we put it against the house so there are 28 3/4’s on each side ? I always put any pieces in a wall under a door or window . Also what has a 3/4 in a wall got to do with using profiles .

No worries mate , to be honest i hate pieces in any wall too . Architects could easily make walls work brick but dont bother . No need to apologise ,its good to have dicussions in the comments . Its a great place to swap ideas. Thanks for watching and commenting on our channel we really appreciate it 👍🏽

What's a "pike"?
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 4 года назад
Marcus . It’s the sloping brickwork under the roof . Most pikes cone to a point , so these are more like half pikes 🧱👍🏽

@@SteveAndAlexBuild thanks for the reply Steve/Alex. I got into DIY and trades at 32 which was 2 years ago, when realising my only chance to afford my own home was to buy a run down property, and do as much as I can. Of all the things I've read up on, I thick brickwork is the best. I'd love to be half as skilled as you one day. If I could turn back the clock, I think I'd have gone into it.

That insulation you are using, should be banned, when moisture get in,it just gets wet,why no vents under damp,to keep cavity dry,
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 5 лет назад
minecraft king cavities haven’t been vented for over 40 years mate . Any vents below dpc are for venting under the floor (block n beam or timber ) ours is a solid slab so no need to vent it. As for the insulation I’ve been using it for over 30 years and never had a problem . Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏽

Be thrown off a house building site working like this sorry
@SteveAndAlexBuild

kjrutter17 . Your right pal but a small extension in a garden just doesn’t warrant the expense and hassle of tagged scaffold and bean bags . We wear hard hats for 5 days of the week too so there is no way we are wearing them in a garden with nobody else working near us at the weekend 😬. Thanks for watching and commenting 🧱👍🏼

@@SteveAndAlexBuild nice one! Also when installing concrete lintels are cavity trays and weep holes necessary? And lastly can I lay bricks in winter? I was told if it gets to cold the motor is compromised? No more questions 😅 thanks!
@SteveAndAlexBuild
@SteveAndAlexBuild 2 года назад
@@JRBstudioS1 As long as it’s a cavity wall you need a cavity tray which in turn means you need weep vents 👌🏼. Brickwork only if the temperature is 3degrees and rising 🥶.🧱👍🏼
