I disagree. Many politicians around the world thought the EU experiment would fail as well - for the same reasons. China has a two tiered currency system which A) has been incredibly useful for them in manipulating the currency value allowing them to become the world manufacturing HUB and B) is not a free floating currency. In order for this de dollarization to be anything other than political posturing China would need to open it's currency to the markets to even contend with the USD. China has no intentions of ever doing this since making it's currency free floating would instantly see the value soar and hurt all domestic manufacturing. Yeah I don't know. In South Africa, for example, we don't even have a single direct commercial flight to India or Russia. Which may sound trivial but it shows that there is no demand (if there was some airline would have jumped on it already) for travel or connection between those places. India will never ensure the hegemony of China by supporting the BRICS currency. They will promote their own UPI instead. The current government of India has some smart people.
In order for BRICS to succeed, each country would have to start unifying their policies. For example, in order to have a shared currency, they would have to unify their monetary policies. Otherwise, one country could just mass print the BRICS currency and cause hyperinflation. I don't see this happening any time soon given how different each country is when it comes to economic theory and policy.
BRICS members already said that every country can use their own currency, it will not be the same model like the dollar to obliterate and treath weaker countries.
By the way, Brics will not be the future if they turn AGAINST the west. If they keep embracing fascists like Putin. That is actually a guarantee for the collapse of Brics.
I love the concept of BRICS, and I hope the bloc expands aggressively too. I will be most pleased if it manages to attract a few more European countries too. I have to also question the long term position of Italy and Japan in G7. Each for different reasons. Italy: could they be the next to exit the EU? Japan is an aging country, a mature economy that desperately needs stimulus. That stimulus is not likely to emerge from the West. And Japan largely has good relationships with current BRICS member states. Could BRICS be an attractive alternative for them over the next 15 to 20 years? I am going to watch this space with great interest.

So in those cases it is not NATO but it´s members acting. NATO doesn´t have any economical goals or influence, or currency for that matter. BRICS strive to become a actor in finance, with some hopefully common goals. The risk is that China will be the one with the most interest to steer it... watch for the China transport routes.

Because that is what has happened between India and China in 2020-2022, with no real reason to think there won't be more on the way. I don't think that those two countries are going to just drop the whole border dispute, shrug off the KIA soldiers, and become allies just to spite the West. And I don't think Brazil is a sure thing for BRICS by any means. Their new government is a change in political direction which may result in a different geopolitical outlook. But, in general, Brazil has cooperative relationships with the United States and other Western countries. Perhaps one of the most important of these is the fact that Brazil's air force uses Swedish Gripen fighters. If your best fighter jets are supplied by a country that is joining NATO, that kind of limits how much you want to court countries like Russia and China.

I don't think a central government like EU is needed, with free transit, common politic rules, common norms and regulations, and great unity. A common indepent economic organization to establish and enforce the currency rules could be enough. All members could still have their own political systems, their own policies, etc, as long as they fulfill a strict set of requirements and implement some specific checks and balances, regarding only the common financial system.

The BRICS countries talk about development at the meeting, and the G7 talks about war and how to prevent other countries from developing at the meeting.

If BRICS or BRICS+ countries start to use local currencies for international trade then Dollar will almost lost it’s status as strong reserve currency.
The dollar is used as the world reserve currency exactly because it is stable and every country trusts its value. The only way any other currency, let alone currencies supersede it would require the US economy collapsing, which is not going to happen any time soon.

So far they created their own digital currency and do not use dollar in trade among themselves. Created a bank that intends to compete with the world bank. And do research together, exchange technology and share information on education systems, agriculture and so on. The satelite that monitors Amazon deforestation is a partnership between Brazil and China launched by India for example.

@@INTJ791 that is not true, companies in India will not use the yuan and vice versa. The only exception was India was able to make a deal with UAE to buy oil using Indias currency. In the world right now 90% of world trade is done in USD or Euros, with 5% done in yuan and no other currency over 1%. Do you really think an Indian company is going to accept yuan as payment, or the Russian ruble which has lost 50% of its value since last summer? The US does not force the dollar on other countries, foreign companies just use the dollar and Euro because it is stable. Imagine an Indian company making a deal with a Russian company and a accepting rubles, and by the time the trade happens at the agreed upon price, the ruble has lost 20% of its value.
I think in general, that the formation of the BRICs is a positive thing as it raises the level of development of these countries. However it is not the be all to end all - each of these countries are faced with major structural problems related to the global division of labour in which they are subordinate to Western imperialist powers.
south africa is almost a failed state, brazil relies heavily on outside investment to keep building and maintaining infrastructure. china's economic growth has slowed drastically and its population will start declining thus its economy will stop growing; not to mention that a lot of western manufacturing jobs are now leaving china. russia's economy and demographics are worse then china's and without an end in sight for the ukraine war this won't change anytime soon. india is the only country that has a positive future.

BRICS is an intergovernemental panel with participants that have highly different ambitions and needs. Its is not a bloc in any sense as there is very little common ground between them. There's lot of talk and lot of smoke, but very reality conrete behind it. Ironically if they want more members it would only further the fragmentation of this group. If you lool at G7 in comparison, their meetings regularly have very tangible consequences. What did BRICS do so far besides making headlines? And a shared BRICS currency - lol c'mon, who would want China to dictate their finances?

The Brick would be such a cool name for a currency. Imagine each note having a masonry motif, or a literal brick, and if you arrange the 1, 20, 50, etc notes together it builds (get it?) some picture (like exodia). I don't msee BRICS as going much of anywhere. For trade, it remains critically dependent on the US Navy for maritime security. It can't provide its own.

Notice that there hasn't been endemic piracy, privateering or navies poaching ships, the like in the 1600's, 1700's, and 1800's of legend. This isn't free, the US made little money off it and is tired of the economic expense in terms of $ and jobs. The US is getting out of the business of holding up the Ceiling for Global Maritime Security. So if you like Global Free Trade, the other nations of the world have got to come up with a plan and a navy.
