I am pretty sure the current strike prevented Don Mancini (as part of WGA) from doing any new interviews for the release. Conditions usually include doing any kind of promotions for films made by the big studios (Universal in this case).
So I've been seeing a lot of reviews lately (not just for this film, but other 4K releases in general) lament the lack of special features on new 4K edition, and I have to say that I personally just do not care. Sure, it seems like they be easy enough to keep in, but unless you're an absolute fanatic of said film, who has the TIME for all that stuff anymore? I'm looking at my collection right now, and if I were to watch two different movies EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, it would take me probably the better part of TWO YEARS to watch them all. I have enough films in my collection that I'm not even really sure I'll ever watch again, let alone have time to look at all the special features or, heaven forbid, watch it AGAIN with a commentary track on. Like maybe for my top ten films of all time or something, but that's about it. At this point in my life, I couldn't possibly care less about anything beyond the films themselves and if the new 4K transfers are worth it. And for those who still pour over every special feature on all their discs, I salute you. No disrespect intended, you do you. Solid review, though.
Oh for sure. Just an observation, not a critique. There's still plenty of peeps out there that love their special features, and they should know these things. But I think the last special feature I ever bothered with was maybe 10 or so years ago, and IIRC, it was the John Carpenter/Kurt Russell commentary on Big Trouble in Little China (which was great!). I can see wanting to do a deep dive on things like Lord of the Rings or other iconic films, but when it's stuff like (looking at a random movie on your shelf) Freeway. It's... well... Freeway. Fun flick, but I'm not bothering to watch any documentaries about it. But to each their own. Anyways, I'm looking forward to diving into these Child's Play sequels myself when they show up in a couple days! (maybe not Curse so much...)@@midlevelmedia
I love this installment in the childs play series, and imo this was the last time they got the look of the doll right. They did a pretty amazing job on the newer scan but extras are lacking, like you mentioned before in other reviews youtube videos be having better extras than the actual movies lol. You’d think they could get an extra or 2 for this but what are you gonna do right?
I don’t necessarily need to upgrade these movies on 4k I got the box set on blu ray that comes with 7 films and I’m happy with the blu ray version and Chucky not my top 5 favorite horror icons he will most like be my 6th favorite horror icon villain but that’s just me though in my opinions Kenny bro
I do know Arrow Video are working on (at least) Bride of Chucky - wonder if they’ll have new special features? I can’t justify double dipping though, happy enough with these.
With the extras: I think Mancini was filming Chucky Season 3 in Late April, then the writers strike happened so it’s on pause right now. Since Mancini is a writer, the current Writers Strike probably prevented him from participating. (No Promo of any kind is allowed per the rules). Either that or Mancini wasn’t able to do interviews at all. These 4Ks were supposed to drop in late July and got delayed to Late August. Scream probably tried to do something and it didn’t work out. Who knows, given the timeline of events tho it’s possible that’s what caused the extras to be small scale.
While this is my favorite of the four newer Chucky movies (not Child’s Play), I found this transfer very lacking. There was specks and I guess that’s called noise or whatever and the movie at times looks almost blown up and just an upscaled version. Still love the movie though but yea a bit lacking for a 4K transfer. It’s crazy that the direct to video versions are more superior in quality. It pains me to say this too but I mean it’s not so much a deal breaker but for what we had to pay for the films, yea more effort would’ve helped make it worthy. The recent Hackers release looks miles above this one and it’s 3 years older.
