Yes, I loved it. The pop song instrumental covers actually kinda worked. Like they took inspiration from the period and just made their own little world with it and it was never meant to be accurate, it was just a very trope-y show to enjoy and I think they made it work.

"Gross" is by far not strong enough in this case. Anyway, has any of you read the books and can, thus tell me if this is how the books are written? Or were they written like real Regency and the tv series changed that?! Thanks in advance for the answer!

@@andis7187 I personally hated the music. Like they couldn't come up with something more creative, and just took modern pop songs and covered them in string quartet. It is an alternate universe but that doesn't mean the costume design is beyond criticism. Karolina makes some very good points here. Specially because the whole vibe of the show is that it looks like a Jane Austen's fanfic, like regency era from a modern pov, so if you're whole aesthetic is going to be a fantasy, romanticized version of a particular historical period, it is to be at least expected that you're familiar with it enough at least

Netflix caters to a teenage audiences in terms of storytelling and romance, costumes and drama (which is not necessarily bad but I do find the dumbing down disingenuous to the teenage audience). Enola Holmes and now Bridgeton it seems a direct reflection of the influencers and tik tokers of today. Elite rich children living their lives unperturbed by the cares and worries of the world outside their class bubble and in Enolas case talking directly to us as RU-vid influencers do in videos etc. Its actually smart marketing choice as a direct /familiar connection to today, back in the day these were the 'influencers' and kardashians of their times. Because I came to watch this show with this view in mind and I was not expecting masterful storytelling or accurate costumes, I was able to watch it all the way through like a soap opera with many a cringe moments 😬😅 I'm watching it for Nicola Coughlan who is in the amazing shoe Derry Girls! The overboob thing drove me crazy too, but I wasn't sure how to fix it until you pointed it out here. I thought maybe the actresses all had small boobs or something, but now I realize it's because their dresses simply didn't fit. You know that scene where Daphne arrives at a ball and she's supposed to be all goddess-like to both ensnare the prince and make Simon jealous? I get that that was the aim, but I feel like it failed to deliver because I honestly felt like her mother looked better than her because her mother was wearing a gown that actually made her boobs look good while Daphne's chest was just... confused. There's a picture at 17:10 that sort of shows what I'm talking about.
@jjknight636
@jjknight636 3 года назад
I was thinking that maybe they did the overboob on purpose to make the actresses look younger. I feel like Marina for instance did not have one, and she’s depicted as a « woman » (having known Love, and the other obvious thing that I won’t spoil just in case) whereas Eloise, Penelope and Daphne are just « girls »

I believe from the story line and where they are taking her character at least Penelope's exclusively "overboob" bodices are made that way on purpose so that in the next series she will look older and more confident. I think it is most probably a set up to give her a cinderella moment later in the story. The designer clearly knows how to dress a curvier figure, look at her mother's dresses, she always looks amazing even through she does not have a slim, almost flat silhouette. Because we know they are using the colors to make a point why wouldn't they use the dress fit and shape also?

In the books, Penelope's mother has zero understanding of Fashion and dresses her in yellow because it's a happy color, even though it is decidedly NOT a good color for her. She also pushed Penelope into society early in hopes that she'd make a good match quickly. So I think that's what the designer was going for with Mrs Featherington's weird too-slim gowns and Penelope's technicolor overboob dresses. Still doesn't explain Daphne's problem, though.

As someone who has read Julia Quinn and other Regency romances I put this show in almost an Alternate Universe of the Regency London that exists in Romance novels where they never wear bonnets, corsets get ripped off of bodices and class is never as important as love. I don’t see why sooo many costume designers feel that period costumes need a ‘modern, contemporary twist’. It implies that modern audiences lack the insight to relate to and enjoy historical aesthetics as they were without them being made more ‘cool’ and ‘sexy’. Also if I wanted to see modern clothing I would just watch a modern movie. The reason many people watch historical dramas is to be transported to a different time/place.

Yes, if you are viewing the show as pure fantasy, the Feathertons' clothing does reinforce the plot point that they are are a garish family. However for me it was still very off-putting because in 1813 they literally didn't have the technology to create the colors and patterns that are worn by the Featheringtons. And while I understand that the show is set in an alternate timeline fantasy version of 1813 London that is socially more advanced than it actually was, they give no indication that their setting is technologically more advanced.

@@carmencapa6945 You really gonna complain about historical accuracy in a series that literally features people of color as nobility? It's not meant to be historically accurate. @@333pinkelephant333 the dresses and postures r a must even in historic fiction. Or else don’t claim it’s from a time period but just say it is a fantasy movie inspired by historic dresses. The black people, They r people. I couldn’t care less that that part about history is not accurate wat I do care is the costumes and posture (mannerisms). IT’S NOT ABOUT WHO PLAYS WHO. It’s about the accuracy or attempt of such in dresses and mannerism these characters portray. The way they portray “oh racism is this easy to rid” is for another complain I have but nonetheless I think they shouldn’t have mentioned their color and went with “it’s the way it is”.

I really appreciated Queen Charlotte’s wigs because some looked like generic royalty wigs but others took into account how black hair is worn and incorporated that into the wigs. One of the big ones that’s stuck with me is one of the taller ones that had dreads threaded through it mind of like snakes. This show was sooo tropey and was pure cheesecake viewing but I really appreciated the What If...? feel to the inclusion of BIPOC in the series incorporated into every level of society.
