Bridgestone brought us out to Utah Motorsports Campus in conjunction with Yamaha North America to put their new Battlax Racing R11 DOT race tire to the test. We spent two full days on track with the Yamaha YZF-R3, YZF-R6, YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M, spinning laps with sticky R11 tire, experiencing Yamaha's R-World.
Importantly, Bridgestone has made the Battlax Racing R11 available in all common Supersport sizes. Whether you're riding a 300cc, 600cc, or 1000cc motorcycle, you'll have race rubber at your disposal.
The Battlax Racing R11 DOT Race Tire is a street legal, single-compound tire, aimed at track day enthusiasts and racers alike. This type of tire is best paired with your favorite Supersport or Hypersport motorcycle, allowing you to push with confidence and have the lower lap times to prove it.
Since this is a race tire, Bridgestone strongly recommends that you use tire warmers, especially on the initial heat-soak, which will help promote proper tire wear and behavior. Of course, we also strongly encourage you to properly set up your suspension to ensure that tire wear will be consistent. Lastly, strongly recommend that you do not use DOT Race Tires on the road, unless you're engaged in professional road racing.
Bridgestone's Battlax Racing R11 is the follow up their previous "grooved race tire," the R10. Riders that chose the R10 will be pleased to know that the R11, while a completely updated tire, shares many of the same characteristics, with the added bonus of improvements in all categories.
This new DOT Race Tire makes use of Bridgestone's proprietary Variable-Mono Spiral Belt (VMSB) construction. The spiral belt is more densely packed in the center of the tire. When moving towards the shoulders, the Variable-Mono Spiral Belt’s gap begins to increase, allowing more flexibility and contact patch conformity while at lean. This technology is found both in the front and rear tire.
Helping with stability, especially when making use of horsepower gluttons such as the YZF-R1 and R1M, is the GP Belt, which gives the rear tire much more rigidity when under hard acceleration.
In practice, those attributes made for a tire that was compliant, but translated massive amounts of feel into the chassis and rider. Bridgestone has struck a great balance between carcass stiffness and tire suppleness in that regard, which many riders should appreciate.
In addition, Bridgestone engineers updated the rubber compounds, allowing for improved tire wear.
Regardless of your riding style, having confidence in the R11 is indisputable. Pushing into corners and trail braking deep, Senior Editor Nic de Sena stated that he had the utmost faith in the tires.
We tested these tires in conditions around 70 degrees Fahrenheit and used 32 psi in the front and 23 psi in the rear, when coming off the warmers.
