Fun fact #1: in the 2003 Canadian Juniors final, Laycock (SK) beat Moulding (AB) and went on to win the World.
Fun fact #2: in the 2018 Canadian Open GSOC, Laycock substituted in for Brendan and skipped Team Bottcher to quarterfinals.

Great coverage. I didn't notice these things happening in the periphery of the feature game.

You never see Brendan react like that after a win. Must’ve been seething until the last shot.

Agreed. That may be the most emotion I've ever seen out of the guy. I really like Steve Laycock but I'm glad to hear that Curling Canada is issuing him a fine for this incident. He obviously didn't intend to damage the ice but there has to be consequences when things like this happen.

I know that this isn't the final. But hindsight is 20/20. Was that game, with the delay and still winning on a great shot, the catalyst in propelling Bottcher to win the Brier?

WTH is Laycock doing. Poor sportsmanship or what. He should be fined. Being an I.T. , I hate how some curlers disrespect the ice

The most essential part of curling is honour: if there isn’t respect for the spirit of the game, it can’t be played. A monetary fine afterward might be appropriate but Laycock’s poor decision could have changed the result in his favour. There needs to be an immediate remedy, an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty of sorts for reckless endangerment of the ice. An option could be a one-minute reduction in thinking time for every 10 minutes it takes to repair the damage.

@@zzz7zzz9 Not sure what makes you think that. A lot of people care about the Mona Lisa, but I doubt that they think she's an actual person..... Good ice conditions are integral to being able to play the game at a high level. A 40 minute delay can result in changes to the ice surface and Team Bottcher appeared to be effected by that. Laycock was responsible for that delay and, even though I'm certain he didn't intend to damage the ice, their needed to be consequences for his actions.

@@shawncharles9980 a hockey player doesn't get fined for 'harming the ice surface'. The ref patches it up with some slush and packs it down with the puck. Is it like it was? Hell no. But they get on with it and continue. If they wanted to 'punish' him still, they should have made him sit out an end, or even the rest of the game, and had the sub replace him. A fine?? These guys don't have salaries from curling.
