This is the 3HP I scored for 15 bucks. Came off of a rota-hoe in bad shape but cleaned up real nice and here it is. Shroud is off another motor, but this motor is made in the 70's due to it being on a Masport rotary hoe. Internals are very clean. WAITING ON DECALS.
The Air Cleaner is a quick 10 minute build and so is the exhaust. They look better in person, but were dirty in the video. Exhaust is also louder in real life!
This engine is going on my custom made Taco Frijole minibike. Down here in NZ I can't get any american minibikes so I am building them myself. Enjoy!

These old Briggs and Stratton small flatheads are absolutely wonderful mechanical jewels.

They have that old school valve timing that you can hear. That cam profile is aimed at making low end torque way below 3000 rpm.

Sweet engine, man. I've been messing with flathead Briggs and Stratton engines since the 1970s and I know a good sounding one when I hear one. The custom air cleaner is very Steam Punk. Flatheads forever!

Thanks buddy! Flatheads are sure addictive, you can't be into cars or motorbikes or anything mechanical without messing with at least one flathead! Thanks for the comment about the air cleaner, I might need to make another for my 2HP! -SmallEngineSmith

very cool, i just picked up a premo condition 3 hp today off craigslist for $ 10.00, i plan on putting in a racing cam, decking the cylinder head , installing a billet connecting rod, wiseco piston and rejetting carb and 3 angle valve job should be pushing 5 hp when i am done with it. Check on ebay for your decals i have purchased them before.

Better off getting rid of the butterfly carb & putting a Chinese slider carb on it: 19mm for 3.5hp & 22mm for the 5hp you'll never look back & makes it easy to hook up a throttle cable too. Trev New Zealand 🤗🇳🇿

Well that would be a hell of a build for a 3hp but unless you are a machinist with alot of resources this will simply be an imaginative engine since there is literally nowhere or nobody that to my knowledge has ever produced such parts as you plan to use. If you know where these can be found please let me know.

Very cool! I'm yet to own a 6BS but own some 6BH engines for rotary mowers :) I find the early Briggs like yours are somehow better quality (different metal mix in the casting?) and last much longer than the 70s Briggs engines. Good luck with the bike!

Hey mate, great looking motor! Sounds sweet and purred. I have a running 2hp briggs that came off a edger! It's going on my restored 1970 Aussie built deltek minibike! I have one of those raptor throttle kits, can you advise how you hooked it all up? Finding there is not a lot of instruction around! If you could show how to hook it up that would be sick!
@smallenginesmith1226
@smallenginesmith1226 8 лет назад
Hey man, sorry for the late reply, I thought I had kept track of all the questions here but apparently not! If you are still interested, I can explain how I connected mine. Firstly if you are planning to use the original air filter, you might find that the raptor throttle linkage will hit it. To connect my throttle, I found a perfectly sized machine screw that replaces the original, as it is too small. The original screw that holds the throttle lever and kill switch has a neat washer that when flipped around perfectly seats into the raptor linkage. Two of these are perfect for the throttle. Then I used some welding rod to make a small linkage from the throttle butterfly to the raptor linkage. That's the best I can explain it for now, if you have any more questions about it feel free to let me know! I'd be happy to help out.

I have a 3.5hp briggs flathead from 2000, it has a 3/4 crank, already threaded. i use it for my badger 100 minibike. Just took it off and stuck it on the bike. The block bolts are threaded to the block, makes it easy. Can i use a 5 hp head and where can i find a billet connecting rod, flywheel, all that.

*Where did you order your decals at? And how was the quality? I have a Fox Doodlebug mini bike that needed an original 3hp B&S and I scored a young 3hp B&S, BOTH for free! I really want to run a straight pipe but i have to stay quiet in the neighborhood for police officers 👮

Hi, nice video ! I have a 3hp briggs and stratton (the same as yours), but my crankshaft is threaded and I can't set a key to fix the clutch, so I don't know if I can fix this clutch on my engine. How did you do ? Thank you.

@smallenginesmith1226
@smallenginesmith1226 8 лет назад
Hey man, sorry about the late reply. Your engine will be from some industrial application and will be a heavy duty I/C engine (these are better for their cast iron bore and ball bearing crankshaft. It was never designed to run a clutch, so you could either get one machined in or find a replacement crankshaft.
@trevinskiking2165
@trevinskiking2165 2 года назад
Don't mess around Liam, do what I'm doing pull it down & take the Crank to a general engineering shop & get be them to machine the crank for a std crankshaft key & you can get them to make a matching sleeve up if the diameter is too small.Goodluck.Trev New Zealand 🤗🇳🇿
@stclairstclair

Also did you tap threads into the hole in the 5/8" crank for the centrifugal clutch? I would prefer that over relying on a set screw, Im lazy I don't want to figure out the proper tap, I'd rather sit here smoking and read what everyone else did 😂
@smallenginesmith1226
@smallenginesmith1226 2 года назад
Typically I just drill and tap them, takes me all of about 10 minutes. Best one was when I didn’t do up my set screws on my Lil Indian minibike, and as I stopped, the clutch departed and spun off down the street on its own. If you do up the set screws nice, and even drill a small countersunk hole for them to sit into, you shouldn’t have any issues :)
@stclairstclair
@stclairstclair 2 года назад
SmallEngineSmith, well it already has a predrilled hole so The hard work is done so I'm going to tap it, But your clutch story had me laughing!!

Where did you get that exhaust pipe
@cravenmoorehead5636
@cravenmoorehead5636 3 года назад
You should try a staged pipe. I fabed one up out of a three stage kart pipe. Had to cut off the flags and thread a 3/4 plummer pipe to it would thread into the exhaust port. Cool thing is you can experiment with different length plum pipe to get exactly what you need. What have you done as far as cams? I have just been hunting through junk yards and stuff for 3 hp engines and profiling every cam I can find. Neve=seen two cams alike so far.

@smallenginesmith1226
@smallenginesmith1226 6 лет назад
I can't quite remember the exact number, but would strongly suggest getting a Champion plug, as the 4 NGK plugs I put in these motors very quickly failed! Not sure why, but I'd go down to Bunnings, Supercheap, or SES NZ (Online Site) and purchase a Champion J8, CJ8 or RJ19LM plug. These are the best for a Briggs and I run them in everything from 1940's Briggs to the new stuff. Hope this helps, if you have any other questions feel free to ask! Cheers.
@cravenmoorehead5636
@cravenmoorehead5636 3 года назад
If you think champions are the best I urge you to try a Denso U GROOVE. Very impressive. I used to be a champion fan until I tried NGK then I finally tried Denso and I'll never look back.
@cravenmoorehead5636
@cravenmoorehead5636 2 года назад
Still havent looked back. In fact I am still brutally running this same exact Denso that I picked up out of my grandpas foldgers used spark plug can collection daily. Everyday at least 2 hours in heavy race condition type running. Like you I wouldn't make it a quarter mile on any other brand of plug new or used. Not sure why but I give you my word Denso wfs-u series plugs match these flatheads.

@smallenginesmith1226
@smallenginesmith1226 8 лет назад
Yes, that was a common colour for these Briggs, it is usually used to indicate the possible year of your engine, but makes it no different from any other
@cravenmoorehead5636
@cravenmoorehead5636 2 года назад
Gold and grey most commonly indicates that it was a warranty replacement engine. On occasion a customer would order their engines on of those two colors but for the most part that is what they are. Just figured I'd share that with you all. Nice to know even if it doesnt matter as far as performance goes.
