Probably the best camshaft replacement video on a Briggs on RU-vid. Simple explanation, clear audio, clean video...just got REALLT confused when I heard your voice for a minute because I've been watching McGregor highlights this morning! 😳
The camshaft rotates once for every 2 rotations of the crankshaft. Therefore it’s possible to have the dots lined up but for the camshaft to be 180 degrees out. If like me you are unfortunate enough to have moved the crankshaft inadvertently while the camshaft is removed the solution (assuming you have tried to start the engine without success and much backfiring) is to line up the dots, then lift the camshaft and turn it as close to 180 degrees as you can, then turn the crankshaft until the dots are aligned or close to alignment. If they are out by a couple of teeth simply move the camshaft round a couple of teeth until they mesh, the timing is then correct. I found out the hard way through my ignorance.
This is very interesting to me if I manage to put my L-series engine back together and it’s 180° out of phase with this cause it to not start? What I’m getting is it attempts to start when cold in the choke is closed but as soon as it’s butter is a few times and I do mean like maybe five or 10 times I open the choke a little bit and it just dies. Also, I noticed saying that there is gas pumping out of the carburetor inlet.

If you use the mower intermittently , just take off the air filter , cover the pipe completely to cut off the air , get it spinning , pull your hand off & it will fire right up !! Been doing this for years on a 19hp Gold Series engine !!
I have had now two of the Briggs 19hp in my John Deere E110 fail. John Deere replaced the first engine..50 hours on it. This engine lasted 53 hours..One year and a week!! John Deere told me sorry your on your own. I took it to there Corp and they told me the same thing. So glad to find this video as I will have to fix it myself....and NEVER BUY a JOHN DEERE AGAIN
@@jesusdrummer21 yeah I did, it's actually a simple fix once you take the motor out, use a magnet to take the metal out. An make sure you get the right governor an new seal an gasket

If you have a oil filter on your motor, make sure you get the right cam. With oil filter,the camshaft will have a slot on the end. The one without oil filter,the camshaft will not have a slot. And as far as removing the pulley off the crankshaft? You may come across a stuck pulley. Then you have too heat the crankshaft.....Good luck.
Briggs had a good patented compression release cast into cam lobe,then they went to this junk compresson realease! The damn thing will just break again !
Looks like I m going to have to do this. New battery, starter turns motor freely when spark plug is out, and I adjusted valves, but still half turn when trying to start. Yeah my mower is only two years old. My old craftsmen I had for 15 years and never had to do this. How old is your mower? Also any extra advice or confidence booster before I start is appreciated! Hi apologies for late reply, The same ingredients are not in those cams as they used to be... its also worth checking that your batt is the correct...what mower do you have now ?
@@mickmac7264 All went well. Runs great. I had to adjust the valves 2 or 3 times before they would stay. I stripped one of the bolts to the engine cover. Wished I had used a torque wrench. See my video. Learning process. gave me confidence to fix in future.
@@bif90210 yep learn as we go,. Sometimes you've got to strip a bolt to know how far to push it. Im working on stuff daily so I've developed built in torque in my arm.. yep seen vid good job..

Don’t forget..!!!…. there is a short oil-pump drive-shaft that sits between the cam and the oil pump!…. Get it out of the sump before you reinstall the bottom sump-cover….then after installing the sump cover (oil pan)…. slip the short drive-shaft back into engagement with the cam-shaft keyed-end…. and reinstall your oil pump so that it is driven by the cam!

Both of my valves are motionless when I crank it. Had recently replaced the flywheel because it fractured at the keyway when she struck an object in the grass. Ran fine for a week and now the valve train stopped. Piston still moves as you roll it over. Is it possible to have a broken cam or gear?
Thanks so much for the video! Question for you... I didn't remove my valve cover. Just went straight to removing the sump cover, replaced the camshaft, etc. Do you think I need to open the valve cover to do the timing adjustments or do you think it's fine since I didn't open it up? Working on a 2019 John Deere with only 120 hours. Thanks!
Mick have you ever had the timing gear spin on the crank? I took off the oil sump cover to watch the crank as i rotated it, and as the timing mark gets to where it should be the piston is down about an inch..any ideas will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I just had this happen with a B&S 331777 20hp. When the compression release on the camshaft grenaded, the shaft got jammed somehow and the attached timing gear kept turning. Actually, the timing gear spun on the shaft so hard that it spun around like a roller skate wheel. Lost all compression.
Hi Mick Maybe a Long shot. I need to change camshaft on my 2006 BG 12.5. Engine id impossible to read. It is a match to the one you have, looking at the shaft end. Do you have a cam shaft part number and maybe an engine id you can share
hey Mick; i have a question i think you can help me with. i think my 25 hp briggs and straton is leaking oil at the part where you said to clean well and sand paper it where it's taken apart. that whole surface. is that something you might have seen before i really need some help if you don't mind.
On my MTD push mower, the starter motor won't turn with spark plug inserted. As soon as I remove it, it turns freely. What can cause that? I've removed the spark plug and pump out oil out of cylinder and piston wall. Have no idea what else to do.
Question: got a B&S 344cc engine on my craftsman 33” mower. Pull start on top removed. If I manually rotate the fly wheel it gets VERY hard to turn at one point. But it eventually gives and becomes easy again....until I reach that point in the cycle again. What is wrong?
Anybody know if and where you can find a cam with larger lobes for a briggs and stratton 14.5 i/c quiet, possibly valve springs too and maybe a lighter flywheel?
Some poor sucker is going to watch this video and follow your instructions right down to tightening the sump bolts. Then when they go to put the pushrods back in they're gonna call you every name they can think of in the book! LMAO
