This is it. The final test. My homemade Briggs & Stratton V8 gardentractor
is ready. New pulleys for a better gear-ratio.
For the moment I am working on my radial engine (Homemade Radial Engine ) but updates will come on this engine as well

If you decide to upgrade the clutch, you might consider an older 60s to 70's style cub cadet clutch. An aluminum plate between two steel plates and it functions like an automotive style clutch.

Your an amazing man!! Remind me of my grandfather that's past. He was a tinkering type. It's were I got my love for lawnmower engines. Built my first go-cart from a push mower motor and old rider transmission an axle. Use old bed frame angle iron and bolts for everything. And wood for the motor plate. Lol those were the 90s as a kid for me.

@Iaintwoke

@@Desmouffe It's a great pity. If you even thought about building and testing a go cart down the road. The police would be there within five minutes to take it away and crush it. What's happened to the world. Can't play half the games we used to play at school because someone might get hurt. The world has become extremely boring and no fun whatsoever.

Thanks for the great video! Interesting project for sure. It would be interesting to upgrade the front steering and suspension with rack and pinion, as well as convert the drivetrain to a hydrostatic drive with taller gears. I could see your project winning some lawn tractor races! Great work!
@Desmouffe
@Desmouffe Год назад
Some kind of transmission with a prop-shaft would be nice. But I don't think the engine can take a lawn tractor race. It's a fragile piece of machinery..
@BigRig003

Why hydrostatic? From my experience, gear driven is the way to go like a peerless 700 or something along those line. I haven't raced mowers for a while

He makes it look easy, but what this man did takes a whole lot of skill. Skills I don't believe I'll ever possess. I have mills & lathes, but harder than it looks to turn a crankshaft. Every crankshaft I deal with is ground & a different world.

Sir, your V8 is exceptional. I hope that it will earn a place back into your stubborn spot. You want the steering on those toed in a little more, it will stabilize it a lot.

The linkage to the steering is very simple. I have changed all the plastic bushes to bronze to reduce the play but I maybe should have proper p-ends instead. The project lives on.

I can tell you have your creation tuned very nicely. How a motor starts and it's low RPM character says everything about it's state. You didn't mess around with this one. My Briggs tricks, right or wrong do help output. Toss the thick head gasket for copper silicone, clean up intake ports but leave a rough texture for atomization. Bore out main jets and toss muffler for plumbing pipe. She will thump like a Harley. Also suck fuel like a V 8.

That engine is awesome! For pulleys though I would stick with the v pulley as it will grab better and not slip, but maybe add some throw to the clutch assembly if it needs to disengage more. Or go 1/2" difference on one of the pulleys (drive or driven) and change the belt size accordingly. I have routed additional idler pulleys to take up slack, so if I'm having this issue where one belt size is too small and gives no clutch, or one size up is too long and doesn't grab, I just put another idler in the route somewhere to take up a little bit of slack and allow the longer of the 2 sizes to grab.

Move the front axle forward to the about the front of the motor and tilt it back a couple of degrees for some castor angle. Then you will be looking for more gears to go faster ! The V8 is cool but that radial lawn mower is awesome ! I want one of those.

You are absolutely right. But the chassie is to weak. After 10 - 15 years work as a lawnmower the vibrations have created cracks all over the chassie. I have welded most of them but new cracks appears. The steel is tired.

Great video, but I recommend putting a bigger pully on the motor to gain a little more speed. The pully on the rear seems correct. I did a racing lawn tractor build 2years ago. Since the motor was a 20HP twin, it had the power to move it, replaced the small engine pully for the biggest diameter pully that would fit without rubbing the frame., then replaced the rear axle pully with the smallest diameter pully. The results were amazing, The tires would spin and kick up rooster tails from the gained power increase. Max speed about 45 MPH.
