I've somewhere tumbling round the back of my mind, either my Ould Fella Making something either the same or similar - trouble is that's back near 40yr - Possible, because he always bought Shit cars, because he was gonna fix them ! Trouble was he wasn't a Mechanic - no matter how hard he tried, it just never came to him ! He'd got Haynes Manuals for near Evry crappy P.o.S. going (barely !) But no Instinct for it ! He was imaginative enough, and I could see him using a Starter-motor or Alternator or an old electric drill, for this kinda thing ! So there's that ! But I think I also saw a similar idea using a Secured electric drill and a plastic jigger to strap on Belts. It was like Something from 1 of those: "Only On TV. Buy1for £30/2 for £37-50" (not including p+p ea at £9:99!) You know, the kinda shit China made thing when China was making Crap, instead of Every F'n Thing We Buy, near as dammit !! => Anyhoo, this 1 seems like Just Too Much Effort + you've lost the use of a drill, when you could just as well Clamp your drill (even wrap it & put it in a Vice) and attach a drill-operated grinder, sander or whatever ! Just don't be like my brother who, too impatient/stupid to make sure everything was well secured, turned on the Ould Fellas grinding wheel, stuck in a iron chisel, the wheel jumped out and, well for about 3 months, because of how he walked, he was called: "The Grindstone Cowboy !" To Peter: I agree, sort of, but he seems to have achieved sufficient accuracy for the job at hand and the construction method. However, I have cut driveshafts with a hand held hacksaw, shortened and reassembled them many times and gotten them accurate enough to use for thousands of miles trouble free. No other way then and there. Layout, marking and filing off the lumps is critical as is alignment and welding (gas) method.

I thought the same thing, then realized what O R Y X said. But, you could still flip one of them around. That would allow you to tip the hub to change the belt, and it would give the extra protection from the belt pulling the hub off the brackets.

@O R Y X, except that one is STILL going to need to remove the screws from the block of wood by the drill to replace the belt.

Is it possible that someone may have the need of a belt sander but has an old drill and other bits around to make this? Maybe no extra cash, credit card, access to a store that carries one or the desire to put more crap into the dump? Also, it's fun and rewarding to build your own things. Hence, all the how to channels.

@@dropndeal it's obvious he doesn't hemorrhage money or we wouldn't be watching this video in the first place. He built a useful (but dangerous) tool from parts that were at his disposal. He created a tool that hopefully he learned better building ideas from the comments, but mostly I hope inexperienced builders that follow in his foot steps will learn from the comments of experienced machinist or engineers.
