To avoid the blind spot problem you can close one eye when the plane is flying towards you. then when it turns away you can open both eyes and the eye that was closed will not be blinded so you can clearly see where the plane is. This is a technique that is used in the military.

Re: blind spot. You could try the pirate technique, have one eye closed at all times, & switch eyes when the light changes. So you effectively have your looking@bright-LED eye, and your night-vision eye.

Needs a clear lens to reduce the air-scoop aspect of the reflector. Also red and green marker lights on the wingtips so you can figure out where it's heading. (Same reason why they do it on real aircraft.) Just remember to remotely turn off the big spot when it heads back in your direction so you don't get blinded by it. (When it comes at you, it has to be hell on your night vision at that intensity and likely after-image.)

You need to put your nav lights on the wing tips ...they would also need to be very bright .....Cool Vid .

A convex lens across the front of the reflector would improve the airflow and also focus the light.

huge drone + crazy sound emitters + loose / direction-controlled superpowered spotlights + leds out the ass in all directions + refracted lasers for that "scanning" effect + populated area = viral UFO video

I think on both an airplane and quad, the fan on the heatsink isn't necessary... the fan is for no-wind environment... in fact, depending how it's mounted on a moving object, the fan could actually prevent some airflow

The reason you can't tell how tilted the plane is, is the light is symmetrical. Put an object in front of the led so it casts a partial shadow, giving you a reference.

Nice job! Now you really need to make a bigger plane with more ground clearance, and a gimbal to keep the light pointed at a fixed and adjustable location. Loitering around a waypoint and automatically illuminating it would be a good programming challenge...

Why not use an autopilot like pixhawk or something?

you need to put the gopro in protune mode and crank the iso to 34000! you can go all the way to 64000 but its a bit grainy.... best of luck

How about swapping the locations of the light and camera - put the camera under the nose and the light on top? Might mess with your center of gravity, but we've seen the alternative. :-P
