Tinsel is the individual pieces that are attached to the string making it a garland. Foil icicles are also referred to as tinsel. Per Wikipedia: Tinsel is a type of decorative material that mimics the effect of ice, consisting of thin strips of sparkling material attached to a thread. When in long narrow strips not attached to thread, it is called "lametta", and emulates icicles. It was originally a metallic garland for Christmas decoration.
@halo218813
@halo218813 Год назад
The lametta is what I call tinsel. I don't use it cuz my cats will eat it lol
@hollyweaver7292
@hollyweaver7292 Год назад
What you have is both tinsel and garland. The thin foil on the garland is tinsel. Back in the '70s bags of plain tinsel were really popular. You would sort of spread strands of it all over your tree and it was the absolute devil to clean up after the tree was down. It was also a disposable item so it was as un-green of a decoration as you can imagine. I think that's why some people get upset with calling 'tinsel garland' just tinsel.

As the label notes, it's tinsel garland. Garland is the rope-like feature allowing the wrapping around the tree (or wherever). Popcorn & dried fruit or paper strips (making a chain) used to be traditional. Tinsel is the silver skinny metallic strands hung individually (or thrown on after much frustration). When combined it becomes tinsel garland. I guess either can be used unless you're adamant about correct term usage. There will always be the purest insisting on correct terms. I love your creativity.

Tinsel is the individual pieces that make up that garland. Traditionally it is like an iridescent clear that makes a mess, but is beautiful on your tree. Clear plastic strips that shimmer. But, hey everyone calls things different and it works for you so keep doing you! I absolutely love all of your projects always! I love the gum drops too, but I think my favorite is the garland under your window!

@morningwoodfarms713 Год назад
Girl, call it what it is, it's garland! Tinsel is long, loose strands that is placed on the tree, coming in semi small packs (usually tinsel is silver only). It's totally different than garland. Garland is a rope style strand, made of small tinsel pieces, faux evergreen, paper, twine or other materials. What you're using has the official name of tinsel garland, but it's really just garland, made with a tinsel style material. It really doesn't look too much like tinsel either, as each tinsel strand is in an 8-9" length. It's not used as much anymore because it's SO messy.

The last item you made was traditionally known as a kissing bough, a Christmas decoration made from wooden hoops, covered in evergreens, fabric bows and a manger with baby Jesus in the middle. Medieval England, especially the Tudors used these to decorate their homes. Sometimes candles were attached, but was a bit risky considering the materials they were made from, in timber buit houses

Here, tinsel is the stuff on the garland. So we call it just garland. The long strings of stuff that is on the garland is called just tinsel. Technically, it's garland made from tinsel. Saying either is technically correct for that reason, but if you want to get specific, the garlend is garlend made out of tinsel, and tinsel is the plastic strings that people hang all over their trees all willynilly. Edit: I do find that themfurther south you go, the more people call it tinsel. Here in Canada, I hadn't heard anyone call it tinsel until I met my hubby who is from Texas.

Tinsel use to be the very last thing to put on the tree. We always use to get in "trouble" for hanging it in globs instead of one little piece at a time. We stopped using it because it was dangerous for dogs if they ingested it.
