Hexham Swamp, known as Burraghihnbihng in traditional Aboriginal culture is a biodiverse coastal wetland system in the Hunter estuary, comprising 3000 ha of mangroves, saltmarsh, open water and freshwater wetlands. Hexham Swamp Rehabilitation Project is managed by Hunter Local Land Services and has successfully improved habitat diversity by reinstating tidal inundation into Ironbark Creek. The resulting mosaic of vegetation communities provides valuable habitat for birds with over 200 species recorded by Hunter Bird Observers Club. This video is a celebration of the diversity of waterbirds in Hexham Swamp including migratory waders from the northern hemisphere and the endangered species the Black-necked stork and Australasian Bittern.
Hunter Local Land Services would like to thank the generous effort by Hunter Bird Observers Club volunteers who have continuously recorded monthly bird counts in Hexham Swamp for over twenty years.
