Bringing Legacy Edge BACK to Windows 10 & 11!

Sounds cool. It seems that EdgeHTML is still in Windows 11 untouched so recreating Edge Legacy shouldn't be that hard on that note. The unfortunate thing it that I attempted the same course of action to recreate a fully functional and fully featured Edge Legacy browser but I couldn't quite work around some of the errors I was getting. As for the UI it is even harder to replicate the square tabs for example. Anyways I'd like to see where this goes. What I'd try to do is create a theme or something to make the new Chromium Based Edge look like the Legacy version but I'm not sure how to do that yet.

@@BloomDevelop NewSpartan will be open sourced. As said in the first issue, I will commit on github when I think NewSpartan will be an interressant Project. More and more, NewSpartan is becoming an interressant project, and not just UWP app with WebView.

making a 2024 version of IE would be cool, actually. honestly, I'd use it if it was faster and was up-to-date and better than Firefox and co.!

As far as I know, IE is still fully functional. The only thing that opens Edge instead is a DLL file, and if you replace it with an earlier one, it can still open. Though it is excluded from the application list and search results

_ahem_ Just try opening classic Roblox, and then clicking a link - It'll open up IE 11, which is somehow still included in Win 11 23H2. Another way is to open the legacy HelpHTML viewer, which also uses IE11.

replace the permissions on that folder with your user name, then apply read write access to administrators!

@@gravitycoil828 still doesn't grant write access to that folder, on windows 11, it only gives read and delete permissions for some reason Deleting files from it? Sure. Writing anything back or modifying existing files? Not even if you access the drive with a non linux liveOS

Davinci resolve should work with an AMD GPU, the main problem for so many people is that it completely refuses to open due to library issues. Try installing it in a container if that's a problem. Honestly the single best tip I can give is that if you have never used Linux before, don't just blindly enter things into the terminal, try to understand what you are doing before running it. Not only will this prevent a significant number of potential issues but you'll learn a lot.

​​@@laglifeI mean I know something on Linux, I already experienced it. But I never got to fix this issue even with installing the drivers from the AMD Website. Could it be a kernel issue related to the drivers? I saw it said "Possible firmware missing: ...amdgpu...". And how do I use a container?

If you have the drivers from AMD's website installed you should have GPU acceleration already, check what KDE shows as the Graphics Processor in settings.

I've successfully compiled the last working non pre-release version of Edge Legacy to an appx file may I know, why does the non pre-release version not work on Windows 11?

APIs have changed enough between versions that it just doesn't work. Legacy edge, for some reason, is tied way closer to the system than almost any other browser needs to be.

@@laglife Have you tested the pre-release version of the browser on Windows 11 23H2? If you haven't maybe can you help me find the folder that contains it's data from that release as shown in the video? Also is there an SDK for the pre-release build of Windows 11 that contained that version of Edge Legacy? I would like to try and compile it as well to an appx file and see if it can bypass the pre-release issues. Forgot to mention that I'm working to find a method to exclude just Edge Legacy from Windows Code Integrity instead of disabling it all together since it can pose a threat.

legacy edge IS a UWP application on both Windows 10 and 11

Code Integrity would still flip, the pre-release tag IIRC is controlled by the certificate MS signed it with and removing it does not help (and that changes a number of bytes!) I think what happens is that first off, Windows Code Integrity sees the pre-release signed executable/library, and refuses to launch it, but if you remove the certificate the file is now just an altered system executable that has no signature. Only way to fix it would be to resign it with a valid certificate that Windows trusts.

I assume that if you successfully imported the version from Windows 10 1709 or earlier it could work. Windows 10 1709 and earlier seems to allow both browsers to co exist.

@@itztechpulse2 also 1809, 1803 and 1903 but in 1903 the start menu app list shows only chromium edge but in others ways of opening legacy edge if you have live tile or desktop shortcut works so you can use both legacy and chromium edge but start menu apps list it doesnt show legacy edge tho. but in 1909 there is an abonded group policy for getting both legacy and chromium edge. it wont work if the files are from 1709 its not the files, its the windows apps api or something doing this. try using edge chromium as a portable app or something. idk.

yes, it is! after performing this process, just run the Microsoft Edge installer [but NOT as an administrator]. you will be able to use both

blur can be reverted extremely easy. youtubers are doing this for views. a solid colour is not ugly and hides things.

@@LobotomyHub solid colour is better it cant be reverse found. use a nice light blue, yellow, green, pink or purple and make the square rounded maybe to make it look pretty.

@@mrfoxesite i get that it does extend the lifespan of the browser (since some browsers cant display modern but display legacy fine), but i feel like some of these browsers are still a bit too new for that

@@frankieepurr true in 2020 new worked great. its sad to get ugly ui. if you disable javascript in chromium edge you get legacy ui. so maybe google updated ui ditched 2020 ui and javscript too outdated for new 2021+ ui? so they reverted to 2010 ui with 2015 google logo. so yeah google should bring back 2020 ui as a greedy company they wont.

doesnt exactly work like that. there is a stub in the SystemApps folder, meaning that all the files from legacy edge were removed. running the microsoft edge installer with a registry key installed does not fix this

so Edge Chromium is worse than IE 11? or even IE 1.0, if we count different releases of a browser as different browsers?
