I take a look into an early community called "Saccarap" located on the East End of the island. A community that relocated from Maine to Galveston Island around 1835, while Galveston was still part of Mexico. Why did these people make Galveston their new home?

Wow! How have I never heard of this. I’ve got to get that Lucy Parker Shaw book. I wonder if she’s related to the early settlers over here in Bolivar who shared the same name. Great video as always

Thanks Aaron!! This little settlement was quite an active place. The Galveston Historical Foundation’s newsletter in the 70s was called “The Saccarappa” Kind of crazy!

Never stop making these videos, please. As a native Houstonia I know the general public under-values Galveston island. I wasn't able to really appreciate the island and its rich deep history until recently. Without peolle2like you, doing th work you're doing, who knows how much more would be lost.

11:24 Years ago on a long trip that took me through the middle of Texas I remember going through a town called Menard off highway 190. I never thought about the name until I just saw this video. I suspect that town was (re)named after this man even though it seems so far away from Galveston, but then again there is a Crockett County is west Texas named after Davy Crockett who probably got no further west than San Antonio. I guess the places where the early Texans lived were obviously already named so geographers just found openings any where in the state they could. Thanx for the video, just subscribed.

I clicked over to the Brandon Seale guy’s Cabeza de Vaca podcast you cited on your Cabeza de Vaca episode from a while back and man alive I’ll tell you what, that is an awesome podcast! He did his Cabeza de Vaca series way back in 2020 but I’ve listened to it twice through already. Dude has a bunch of other podcasts about other Texas stories and archaeology he is involved in. Question??? Rumors have it that during WW11 Germans from a U Boat broke into a store on or near the west end on the island. Is this true?

My dad was watching a Saturday matinee movie in a movie theatre in Galveston when suddenly the lights came on and MPs came walking down the aisles. They suddenly stopped and summoned 2 men from their seats who turned out to be German navy men from a U Boat who had come ashore for a little R&R.

Letter writing is a lost art form. Shaw's Hotel was used for polling place for the 2nd ward. I read. Always great information.

that’s fascinating first I ever heard that! Also additional things I think I had previously learned but sorta forgot or never knew the full details: Galveston was started by a Canadian?!?! Also Jean Lafitte, that one’s always sorta a fun one for kids and the myth of the buried treasure and all😅 so I definitely knew about him but I had not remembered the years he was there and I definitely didn’t know it was the US Navy that kicked him off and I want to learn that specific side story now also! Very cool video been loving your vids ever since I found the channel. From Richmond sw of Houston but yah always love going to Galveston. Btw… is the host a socalled “B.O.I.”?😅 born on island, as it were. One time I was listening to Michael Berry radio show and a caller called in talking about it as like a point of local pride and “snobbery” haha but not like mean snobbery like you might think of but like I dunno…in playful sorta way haha since we’re all proud of our Texas heritage but like, also proud of the city and neighborhoods which we were from.
