About Jew in The City:
Launched in 2007 by founder and executive director Allison Josephs, Jew in the City (JITC, a 501c3) has quickly grown to be a leading voice in this generation. It is the only nonprofit dedicated to changing negative perceptions of religious Jews and making engaging and meaningful Orthodox Judaism known and accessible. This is achieved by highlighting an approach based on kindness, tolerance, sincerity, and critical thinking.
Painful experiences within the Orthodox world, caused by dysfunction and ignorance have tarnished the opinions of a sizable minority of insiders who find themselves Jewishly displaced. These traumatic versions of Orthodoxy then get amplified in modern day media and entertainment without the much needed nuance they require. This results in a distorted public perception of Orthodox Jews and Judaism, pushing less observant Jews away, creating shame around being Jewish, and fueling antisemitism.
Jew in the City addresses these challenges on every level:
*Repairing systemic issues from within - through our Tikun branch
*Rehabilitating and re-educating disenfranchised Haredi Jews - through our Makom branch
*Holding traditional media accountable for accurate reporting and creating original positive Orthodox content - through our Keter branch.
Our programs cause Jews to lean into their Judaism, create Jewish pride, and reduce antisemitism, bringing about lasting change for generations to come.

Thank you so much for this discussion. I am not Jewish - Christian - so part of the Abrahamic family. I so appreciated watching Jewish Matchmaking for the religious and spiritual culture the series captured, and definitely for the values and intentionality of dating and marriage it shows. I am an older woman - never married nor had children - not intentionally, not by design. What you both discussed toward the end of this video - and what I saw in the matchmaking series captures for me exactly why I think I am without a committed relationship/marriage or family of my own. Our societal emphasis on individuality - and the incredibly naive, banal and shallow secular guidance on life’s purpose, the purpose of dating, relationship building, marriage, family now blows my mind!! I mourn, not just for myself and my numerous single female friends, but for young people who are living a shocking life of just having fun and “hooking up.” It could be incredible to do an inter-religious discussion on the “mitzvah” of marriage, family, community because there are a number of similarities when examined. And I would love to see a similar series on staying married, child rearing and being in community. With the power of TV, we could use that to balance the bombardment of other negative, misguided messages. Anyway, I will stop here, and just say that I applaud your missions for your religious culture- and especially to Aleeza Ben Shalom for a most important and honorable profession and mission you have chosen. If I could employ Aleeza’s services for myself and us “women of a certain age,” please let me know!! Blessings to you both! Paula

I love Alezza. She was so patient with each person and really did take the person’s interest at heart. Not an easy job. I was born Catholic, non prancing now but I see how this way of match making really helping young people. She is not taking any person who is not serious. I think this is wonderful. Instead of dating so many frogs. I enjoy this show. I loved Alezza helping the 51 year old man with his wardrobe. Some people really do not know what they want. If I was young and Jewish. I would want her as a matchmaker. I found my other half when I was 22 and I was lucky, married 46 years. ❤

I really hope there's a season two!!! As someone that is half a Jew as I like to say, I was so happy to see a mix of people because even with my family there are mixed Jews and I loved seeing that.

I love the show. I laugh at the one guy wanting a beautiful woman but he was average looking. Some people are shallow.

I feel the same, the Matchmaker was manuevred very skillfully to help people with a variety of self-awareness and psychological introspection and maturity without the Matchmaker either belittling their flaws-areas to work on or, on the other hand letting their e.i. irrational rigidity or immature perceived needs in a potencial Spouse lead them to make unwise marital decisions.

I watched a few episodes yesterday and what really surprised me is how common matchmaking was across all the Jewish sects and not just ultra orthodox judaism, which is what I personally would have thought with the strong gender divides
