This is maybe one of the, if not the best David Chase interview I’ve ever watched. He’s more comfortable, and open with these two than I’ve maybe ever seen him. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Best interview with him so far. You can see he had zero defenses up & just enjoyed getting to share some time with you both. Plus interesting questions
It's great to see David Chase open up here. When I see him interviewed he's usually very reserved and doesn't say much. I guess the comfort level he has with Robert Iler and Jamie-Lynn Sigler helps. Great interview!
Have to rewatch the show again now. For the umpteenth time. That scene outside the police station with aj and tiny really is excellent. Heavy stuff. “It’s not in your nature”.
yeah i always felt like we were a family friend wearing a wire and in that moment Tony figured it out and ripped it off our chest and thats the last thing we remember :)
I watched The Sopranos for the first time last year age 31 born in 92, I absolutely loved it and was blown away with how funny the show was! Unbelievable watch.
Oh, I loved your previous podcast Pajama Pants, but this one show was quite simply the best. Just the best... Perfect questions, perfect pacing, the loving back and forth. You both learned things from David you'd probably never known before, and David especially -- learned things about the show that he created that now, in the fullness of time, he is able to see from a different vantage point. And both of you provided that... The entire Sopranos cast and crew are like family to me. I even have a picture of Furio -- Federico Castelluccio -- with my "kid" I was a nanny for, at a house party up in Saratoga NY years ago when he was a college senior there, lol... Thank you for a wonderful hour of reminiscing. I think I'm going to watch it again... ❤
❤ David Chase. Thank you for the Sopranos series. Nothing has had a place like that in my life from entertainment industry. For decades. It hits your psyche on every level
When Rob said he feels a "come down" when they all leave... I feel that after every film I work on. I know that some people I was on set with won't be there the next time and it's a pain felt in the soul. It choked me up to hear it vocalized because I know all of you were so close. Great episode, everyone. Thank you.
This was not only a great interview in general, it was also great to see Chase as a down to earth fellow, with great responses to great questions. I think both of the Sopranos kids brought immense dimensions to the show, I mean imagine the show without them, all the cultural and social aspects their characters brought to the show. Btw, what documentary are they talking about??
Thanks for today Pals. Those moments of being a part of a creative endeavor when suddenly everything clicks and you know eachother on and off in and out and good and fucking angry its all so perfect to take in and make you a family. Tony told you the truth about the business and it transitory nature. But after years together these lucky few, these band Of Brothers...and sisters, will all go home and every time you see eachother there might be one less of you standing. And when will i see you again means so much more than it ever has. Live for those moments and remember no matter where we all go we all go with our families to our greater families. The love lives on in our hearts minds and souls.
That would be awesome because it would open up more sopranos lore because Joey actually got the role of pussies cousin who had to deal with Phil’s car seat but he blabbed and told someone and he got fired for it also he was in MSON
I find it funny not even Robert gets it. AJ was never grateful for material possessions because he never got what he really wanted: Respect and the truth from his father. AJ wanted to follow in his dad's footsteps, but Tony would never tell him the truth about what Tony did, and how much Tony didn't want AJ to get into the mafia. AJ knew his dad was lying to him about what he did, and all he wanted was for his dad to not lie to him.
Fan of these guys, but it's a bit corny to say that a filmaker's intentions is to bring people together. It's a creative outlet (hopefully) where the writers and actors can create something that the public enjoys... I guess one can take the angle of bringing people together because that's ultimately what happens, but give me a break (whether one is a pro athlete or anything, no one's central goal is to bring people together). No one is pitching to a studio... my goal is to bring people together. In hindsight once can take this warm and fuzzy angle, but to me it comes across even more narcissistic. I hope the doc doesn't take this angle because I don't feel like hurling. It would be like someone who does construction saying... I built shelters for mankind as though that was their central desire. I guess I understand that people and especially a documentary maker wants to be profound, but I don't know
I loved loved loved this episode but was just shocked to discover that Lorraine was the designated party host of the group😅 I could have sworn I saw somewhere that she only had houses in Brooklyn and Sicily, so I guess I didn’t expect her to be the lavish one of the group.
Tony was too lucky to die …the priest got sick before he fxckd carmella…makazian took a header off the bridge AFTER he told Tony about the rat….2 black guys failed to kill him…i repeat, 2 BLACK GUYS FAILED TO KILL HIM AT CLOSE RANGE LMAO …yea right..luck was with Tony the whole show he never dies💯13:31
I always loved AJ. Never understood all the hate for him. And I'm speaking as a writer of fiction. I mean, yeah, he was sometimes annoying, just like every other kid. But considering that he grew up in a dysfunctional family, I always thought his heart was in the right place. Loved Rob's acting too. Great podcast and great interview with David. What a brilliant, inspiring writer!
I didn't like A.J. or Meadow half of the time either, BUT it's just because they played their characters so well that we were meant to dislike them at times. If they hadn't played the characters that well, we never would have connected with them and had emotions like that about them. You guys killed it.❤️🔥 Thank you both for making my years growing up special. My dad and I used to watch this show together every weekend, and those were incredibly amazing memories for me because of you all.❤
The very reason that Rob doesn’t think his acting, as AJ, was good, is the same reason it was so good (realistic/relatable). His confusion as a young actor would have only (unconsciously) enhanced the confusion he portrayed within his character. What makes The Sopranos so great is that they didn’t cast the best actors, but they cast people who were the best fit (great alignment trumps great acting anyday).
Sopranos spinoff featuring AJ and Meadow all grown up; Meadow working in the entertainment industry as TV producer and AJ in and out of rehabs and jail as he struggles with addiction. This would ultimately explain what happened to Tony. The family mob ties could be on the periphery as these characters navigate their adult lives until they are forced into scenarios where they need to lean on their family connections. I'd watch! make it happen David Chase!
David's laugh is so genuine and electrifying, I love it. Truly, truly appreciate every single one who was involved in Sopranos! This show was everything to me in my early 20s for the longest time. To this day, nothing can beat that.
I like all the interviews David Chase has done. He's always interesting to listen to and what a talent he is for producing the best tv show of all time. Nothing beats the Sopranos in my opinion and it is way beyond any other shows I have enjoyed. The complexity of the multiple story lines per ep, typically 3 or 4 story lines, some intersecting, some purely for exposition. The casting seems perfect to me, how is that possible?
one thing i realized watching this… the folks in our lives who were adults when we were kids, will always look at us as kids… and i mean that in the sweetest of ways. i’ve never seen a david chase conversation where he’s talking to people as gently as he is in this conversation
btw, Do a remake of Roman Holiday. Light funny love story. Half of every episode of the Sopranos had me and my family laughing their asses off here in freaking Elizabeth New Jersey. Roman Holiday Rewritten by David Chase could be a miniseries. please give me six episodes of joy and remake this.
I feel like AJ (and to an extent Rob) gets shit on so much. I get it, AJ can be very annoying but he really doesn’t do that much bad shit, most of the time he just does dumb shit (especially to himself) and yeah he is ungrateful and selfish but to be fair, look at who his influences are in life. This is the only way of life he’s ever known.
Robert Iler's acting, especially in the final season was literally top tier.. And he had a lot of difficult scenes that required crying. His angry ahh fuck! and ahh fuck me! moments are probably my favorite in terms of moments as opposed to scenes and they seem so genuine, which is why I laugh out loud when I see them. One is when Tony is in a coma and he melodramatically says it to Carmella and the other is after he and his girlfriend breakup and he's in his room crying as Tony's talking to him at which point he realizes Carmella is listening through the door... ahh fuck me! But I don't know how actors pull off cry scenes such as aJ in that scene. Michael Imperioli really struggled with his cry scenes. Adrianna also struggled in some of her cry scenes.
The police station scene is both a well written and acted scene. AJ almost certainly had no intention in succeeding in the stabbing of Junior... so it was sort of like a cry for help... also an attempt to be noticed and/or get recognition from his father. But maybe I'm wrong... was AJ seriously willing to throw everything away to avenge and make his father proud?
David Chase is a Genius In Television Creation. The Sopranos is Television Perfection. Love Your Podcasts!!! This Was a Great One!!! ❤. You Two are So Good Together!!!
@@taylorbest-df1eg it’s called Wise Guy. It just premiered at Tribeca. I imagine that’s where they were able to link up with him for the podcast. I believe it comes out on HBO later this year. I don’t think there’s an official release date yet.
