This is by far the best care video that I have seen, thank you. The advice on training your donkey for the farrier is so very important, and finding a farrier with donkey experience. Always ask for references. The same with a new veterinarian. We all have had experience with professionals that don't have adequate donkey knowledge, and we need to protect ourselves and our donkeys. The advice on blanketing is also helpful. Donkeys don't have the oils in their coats like horses. Rain and a chill can kill a donkey. Thank you again. Best wishes. Jw.
We have been on our 10 acre property for about a year. I found a 2 mth old in the paper, the lady doesn't have time to put in him. I do. Tha k you so much and glad I was recommended your channel. I have A LOT to learn before having a couple ladies. It wouldn't be fair to the donkeys if I didn't learn all I can first.
Please understand two months is way too young to leave mom. This donkey will need another donkey asap to live with. Come over to my website at Donkeywhisperer.com for personal coaching, tack, E-Training videos and books and read my free blog Donkeywhispererfarm. Take care!
I just love Donkeys. I don't know why..lol. I grew up on a farm, but we only had like two donkeys. But, I know they very intelligent !!! I only have a few acres in Tenn., but I am thinking about a male and female as a pair. (young ones). Your video's are very informative. Thank you !!!
Here in Az we have a few places that have wild donkeys. On Lake Pleasant the donkeys are quite tame and like to raid camp sites when people are not around. It's wonderful to see them
@@alanalocicero542 Please understand donkeys prefer their own species. Donkeys diet is serious so placing the donkey with a larger animal will require separating for meals. Can a donkey survive with a mule or horse yes and no. It depends on the donkey personality and the horse or mule. Some horses chase donkeys and make the life difficult for a donkey. Donkeys do not want to live alone in isolation. When we put a donkey in with another donkey geldings with geldings and jennies with jennies the donkeys groom, play tug, tag, grab the neck, eat, drink and sleep together.
I don't own a donkey but i find this very interesting and very informative. I knw you have some well loved donkeys. Have a merry Christmas. I enjoyed a full-watch. 👍🏽🙂
Thank you for all your tips! I’ve just welcomed home my very first donkey yesterday in Huelva, Spain. He’s a handsome fella by the name of Sancho. Will be watching your videos!
Congratulations! If you can afford to pay for two donkeys please get your donkey another donkey. Donkeys are intelligent and emotional beings they always do best when getting to live with another donkey similar in size geldings with geldings and females jennies with jennies. :)God Bless you and your donkey!
Yes of course, I am already considering another one, although until I have a full time job I will have to hold off. I also have a German Shepherd and a piglet is set to arrive in a month. But let me assure you that this donkey is one of the most well-looked after donkey you'll ever come across. He has direct access to my home, and pops his head in to say hello all the time, and I walk out to greet him all day long. He hangs out with us all day and eats like a king. I take him for walks on my little mountain to exercise and graze the little there is to graze, and soon he will be taken for walks on the multiple trails we have here. I also have a saddle for when he is healthy again. He was a very neglected, scrawny and sad donkey when he arrived, but the turnaround was instant. We have multiple hugging sessions a day and he runs to me to greet me whenever I've been gone for a few hours, and brays. He's already learnt his name and follows me everywhere and has learnt the word ¨kiss´¨. I don't go half-way with my animals. @@Donkeywhisperer
@@msnhostetler A jack needs to become a gelding. Jacks live a grim life forced to live in isolation waiting to reproduce. Jacks have testosterone and are difficult for the beginner. Donkeys grab the neck in play and in battle especially when forced to live without another donkey. I highly recommend finding a vet that is experienced in gelding donkeys and get this done. When you get another donkey for your donkey bring home a gelding similar in height.
yes, I'm realizing this as I am researching and talking to the right people. He's 8 years old. It sounds like I won't be able to take out riding off my farm unless he is castrated...@@Donkeywhisperer
Thank you for all this information! I am on the East Coast of Canada with harsh winters, so I have a lot to learn. Much appreciation from your new subscriber!
Thinking of getting donkeys! I’m just curious, do they need to be locked in the the barn? Because our pasture has a barn(shelter) attached to it but there is no door it’s simply those rubber strands that can be pushed upon by just walking into it. In the winter in Canada does it matter that there is no door like there’s heating inside the barn but will they know to go in it when their cold? Should they even go out of the barn in the winter?
Donkeys are intelligent and emotional beings. Donkeys need access to shelter with clean water, warm in the freezing temperature, salt and hay in the shelter for meals. A door is beneficial if you have high winds and freezing temps. If the plastic hanging door locks down so the wind is stopped and the donkeys can leave an enter on their own this works too. Locking any equine in the barn full-time is abuse as all equine need to get exercise physical and emotional. We lock our donkeys and horses in for emergencies, fire works shooting over the farm, high winds in the freezing temperatures for a night or a few hours only. Note; we have video cameras inside the barn and around the farm to check on our equine. I like to go to donkey shows in Mexico... It is so satisfying to see the ladies showing so much respect to the donkeys. The donkeys seem to be really satisfied at the end of the show.
that is really cool, i think or have thought donkeys are a lot smarter than horses, and really cool looking. a man i gave a ride home one day, had 2 donkeys in his yard, i wanted to see and pet them, we walked to the fence, and when the donkeys came up to him, he told me to scratch right where you said, and the donkey looked at me and actually moved closer so i could pet it better i guess, but i thought it was like petting a dog, they want more petting also when they consider you a friend and not enemy. great video for donkey lovers.
The cost of a farrier depends on the experience and where you live in the world. In Washington state the farrier is $65.00 per equine, miniature, horse, mammoth donkey, burro or standard.
My two new rescue donkeys were left out to pasture to live. literally abadoned there. However, they must not have had enough nutrition because they are extremely underweight. I have been feeding them dry forage in a slow feeder net about as much as you show being placed down in the video, 2x per day. But is it ok for them to also graze on my grass for 1 hour per day? At least, just until they gain a little weight?
Hi Stacy, Ensuring our donkeys are healthy is really important, understanding the scoring system of weight for donkeys is a start. Please see my blog post to look at the donkey scoring chart. blog.donkeywhisperer.com/donkey-diet-consider-a-track/ Adding weight should be done slowly. When donkeys are not gaining weight we need to investigate deeply. Young donkeys are much more active than older donkeys. Healthy adult donkeys that are not working, pulling a cart or being ridden gain weight fast. Senior donkeys can have serious health issues such as cushings affecting their ability to gain weight. I highly recommend a veterinarian check asap. Make sure you have quality hay, no alfalfa, no mold and smells good. Ask your vet for a health checkup, make sure you do not have sand colic, listen to the heart, run a fecal sample to see what your parasite count is. Signs of sand colic are very similar to any other bout of colic and can include: Abdominal pain. Often horses will nip at their sides with colic and can be seen with raised tufts of hair along their abdomen. Abdominal distension. Diarrhea. Weight loss. Distress with rolling, pawing at the ground, groaning, and sweating. Tape worms do not show up in a fecal sample so if your donkeys have not been wormed in a while always give ivermectrin gold the first time. We do fecal samples with the vet each spring and fall after the first frost I give ivermectrin gold to tackle tape worms. Remember over worming causes resistance parasites to wormer. The vet needs to look at the teeth, many times the donkeys have high points or gingivitis making it difficult to chew and eat. @@Donkeywhisperer Thank you for your in-depth, helpful response. My donks are between fair and moderate, though the Mamma ( I believe she's older, though the former owner isn't being honest about her age) has a distended tummy despite the bony back, neck and hind quarters. We are working on getting a vet out as well as a farrier.
I live in Costa Rica we have donkeys here. I would like to purchase a donkey. But we are a tropical area, how would i be able to take care of him. I don’t want any mistakes. Thank you, Kim
First, get two donkeys never one. Geldings with geldings and jennies with jennies (female). The diet is number one control the diet with low sugar protein hay, clean water, salt with minerals.
March 31,2023 Hi. I just took in a stray donkey stallion. He was hanging out in an unwanted place and we didn’t want a sadder fate for him. My neighbor is helping me get him used to the halter and I led him a tiny bit today. I have no history on him. I have the vet coming out 4/19 to geld and do a check up. On the search for a farrier. His hoofs and cuts and flinches let me know he has had a rough go. I have zero experience and I am willing to learn. Should I give up or listen to my heart?
Hi, please never give up! This donkey can learn to trust humans again. The vet needs to be experienced in gelding donkeys. Make sure you have the donkey tied off to avoid bleeding to death and the vet understands the drugs to sedate the weight of the donkey etc., ORDER donkeywhisperer.com/shop/ Get my donkey 101 & 102 video on demand with E-book courses. So you cant rotate a donkey around each day with sheep? I have a baby donkey coming soon and she will be moved daily not in a dry dirt area with a few hours turned out. I dont run my farm like that for any animal.
Congratulations you are bringing home a baby donkey who needs you to understand that donkeys are not horses with long ears. Donkeys are one of the most intelligent animals on our planet as smart as the dolphin and a memory that forgets nothing good or bad for life. All donkeys need another donkey to live with full-time and need to run and play. Donkeys evolved from the desert, one of the donkeys gifts is to survive on the foods in the desert. Donkeys digest food and drugs different from horses. Think about what is in the desert to eat. :) Donkeys need hay that is tested to be low in sugar and protein 10% or lower is the goal with portion control, clean water, warm in the winter, salt with minerals no sweet feeds or vitamins are needed. Obesity in donkeys causes hoof abscesses, white line disease, rotated coffin bone, big fat necks that can break over, fat pockets, fat in the blood, insulin resistance, colic and a slow death. Donkeys cannot graze on alfalfa or green rich pastures as they will get diarrhea and become obese quickly. Donkeys grab the neck in play and in battle with other donkeys can kill smaller animals especially baby animals or even a domesticated dog. A donkey that has another donkey to grab the neck and play tag, tug with a ball and sleep together is a healthy happy donkey. A baby donkey needs another donkey its really important as donkeys are emotional and can get depressed stop eating and drinking. Donkeys are healthiest when getting to live with their own sex and similar size donkey full-time. Making a donkey live in a dry lot is not what I teach. I teach creating hot wire tracks that turn dry so donkeys can run and play connected back to the dry lot with shelter, clean water, warm in the winter, salt and hay for meals with portion control. The flat halter is ineffective for training donkeys, mules and horses. This is why you will see donkeys at shows wearing a flat halter with a chain. I use soft yacht rope it will never hurt the equine ever. The best part for you is the halter lead line is quality will last a lifetime.

Donkeys prefer to live with their own species as donkeys love to grab the neck, play leap frog, play tug with a toy. Donkeys will bond to any animal or human that treats them fairly. donkeywhisperer.com
Hi. I am new to Donkeys, I got two. They seem to be very wild, probably mistreated prior to my home. But the biggest problem is that they tried to kill my dog today or maybe at least injure her terribly. I was there to save her. They also tried to kill a goat, it was a male goat. I am not sure what to do, is there a way to train them? Or do I need them to go to a new home that doesn't have smaller animals. I'm sick to my stomach about what to do.
Hi Elisabeth, congratulations on bringing two new donkeys into your life. I am sorry that you were told donkeys are great live stock guardians as this is a myth. Most donkeys are not great live stock guardians. Please understand that donkeys and dogs or smaller animals like goats, sheep, chickens, pigs are not a good mix in most cases. We use electro-braid hot wire as you can see in the video on the paddock paradise tracks. The hot wire keeps our dogs from entering the paddock of the donkeys and horses. Donkeys see a domesticated dog or any animal entering their space as a threat. Donkeys can kill a domesticated dog, goat baby sheep, chickens, goats quickly. Small animals like a goat etc., should be kept in their own space away from the donkeys. Donkeys always two donkeys that are raised as babies with livestock not a Jack (stallion) and lots of land to roam can live in harmony. Remember to remove the babies until big enough to get away from the donkeys grabbing the neck or stomping them. The best live stock guarding animal is a dog great pyrenees is a great dog. Why do donkeys need (according to humans) an elaborate barn with stalls and be enclosed. They were born into outdoors and dry country. Seems like outdoors (not on green pasture ) would be healthier. Very short time on pasture is best. IMHO An overweight donkey is not healthy either..
Donkeys, horses and mules need shelter to get out of the weather. Having a safe and secure shelter is very important for the equine and for the humans taking care of them. Donkeys do not need to graze they evolved from the desert. I never lock my equine in the shelter they choose to go inside on their own and sleep inside their stalls. The only time they would be locked in is due to high winds and wind chill factor or vet orders due to illness. Great questions.
When there were no vehicles, they were like the household dog that can tow trailers and get to the shops and back happily every day for 40 years in exchange for a handful of dry grass.
very repetitive video. Was hoping for advice on literally HOW TO GET MY DONKEY from the travel trailer after a 2 hour trip INTO his new barn. This was not helpful at all.
