Part One: • Bristlenose Pleco Bree...
Part Three: • Bristlenose Pleco Bree...
This is part two of my Bristlenose / Bushynose pleco breeding project! If you have any questions at all, feel free to email me at FoisyYT@gmail.com and be sure to subscribe to see more amazing aquarium videos!
Some lessons learned: Only keep one male and 2 or 3 females in each tank or divided section. Otherwise the males fight nonstop! If you remove the eggs from the cave, use an egg tumbler to help prevent fungus. The Java Ferns were the only plants that my larger plecos didn't tear up. And try to only breed Bristlenose of the same variety / color, to get offspring that are worth more. Super reds, blue eyes, green dragons, and long fins are more valuable and easier to sell. If you are planning on breeding, make sure you have enough capacity to hold all the babies as they grow for at least 6 months, and make sure you have a place to sell them!

Just an FYI, 4 anyone breeding bristlenose, the garden-variety brown snails will not eat the eggs. I have a tank filled with garden snails and they crawl all over the eggs and never hurt them at all. Also, occasionally the males will kick eggs out of their cave, but generally, bristlenose are excellent parents and will not harm the eggs.

i'm new into breeding ancistrus. I have a male now guarding eggs in a cave. I have 2 females and 3 males super red ancistrus, in a 1 m tank with a lot of wood and big anubias, and caves... I've been told to keep at least a few males, because breeding is an exhausting job, because the guardening males does not eat for a week or more. So after breeding, the male can rest and recover from this, while another male can take action if there is another female carrying eggs... I don't know if this is the best thing to do, il'm still learning... My ancistrus also goes into the internal filter now and then,(just like your ancistrus "climbed" into your breeding box) so yes they move above the waterlevel to get somewhere, if they want to.

Okay, one more tip for people, for plants for bristlenose I can highly recommend water wisteria which the babies will eat off of but will not destroy and the bigger ones will leave alone because it is too delicate to support their bodies. The larger ones like to lay on large Amazon swords also, and they will only eat dying material typically. Finally, water Sprite or water Wisteria floating on the top works really well in pleco breeding tanks because they appreciate Shady conditions.

As for the Anubis. Its possible the the plant was grown immersed and those leaves are just dying off. The new growth looks good. Very common . Plant looks healthy. Just snip off the leaves that have the holes. Know sense letting the plant waste energy on them.

One more bit of a tip for anyone breeding baby plecos. They will climb up the waterfall out of your hang on back filters and will live down in your hang on back filter quite happily. So check the pads carefully before you change them as often young plecos will be feeding off the filter.

Because it's his cave. The Male plecco invites the female over and once the eggs were disturbed - the cave cleaned out...etc the male no longer recognized his babies only his cave. Once eggs are fertilized by the Male- the female can go. The Male takes over and raises the kids. He probably dont recognize her scent anymore either which would allow him to identify his kids. Know what I mean? Good luck hope this helps - I read it on wikipedia

I have so many questions!! I currently have a Common Pleco that has a HUGE belly, has had it for weeks now. I dont know if she is carrying or bloated. How long does it take for them to actually lay the eggs? Will she lay them if she doesnt have a cave like place? How long do they carry the eggs before laying?

If u use an egg tumbler or an air stone in your breeder box that would have helped prevent fungus. Most of your eggs were good. Most times dads do a great job fanning and taking care of the eggs. 😊

Mr Josh De la Torre Hi Josh typically yes, most are cave spawners. The females typically are wider across the middle than the males. I would research the type of pleco you have. Feeding them well frequent water changes can sometimes help induce a Spawn. Good luck!

Those are fertile, be careful using net breeder boxes for plecos, I've lost a load of pleco fry trying that approach, go for the plastic breeder boxes instead. They need something to attach to, but my theory on what's gone wrong is that while they're feeding on their yolk sacks other fish can still attack the yolk sacks through the mesh. I haven't witnessed any of that, but I have seen the adults going for the mesh, so it is just a theory. If I'm ever saving eggs I think I'll be setting them up their own tank, I've gone from about 30 fry the other day, to 18 yestersay, to less than 10 today in a mesh breeder box

My bristle nose had eggs behind the the filter. As i was taking water out he was jumping out and going crazy. I did not know why. As i took the filter off I noticed the eggs and was so saddened at the stress he was going through. I put filter back and finished up quickly and left hom to his babies. I will never interfere ever again.

Hello again I have some tiny recently hatched pleco eggs\babies! They hatched on Saturday/Sunday. They still have their egg sacks attached. I am a first timer at this, my other clutch about 10 months back didn't hatch. So a few questions. How many more days should they take to absorb their egg sacks? What do I feed them after they have absorbed the entire egg? One of the females kicked them out of the cave, so they are being raised in a separate grow out tank.
