The advantage to water in the door is that it runs through a filter so is purified. Saves a ton on bottled water, I think. You have to replace the filter but there is an indicator light that lets you know when it is time.

Dehumidifiers take water from the air; walls will then release any water they have due to diffusion (higher concentration moves to lower concentration). I have one in the basement and it has an out-going tube to the drain (I'm in northern Mn) Also, our washer machines can hold nearly twice the amount of clothes. Our houses are generally larger, so we have more space to accommodate two machines next to each other. PS most of us have basements as backup storm shelters - where we go during a tornado siren
@Gems-of-Hope-Rocks
@Gems-of-Hope-Rocks 11 месяцев назад
The wall a/c is tipped out and downward so that the accumulated water drips outside. Otherwise all of that humidity stays in the house and soaks into the walls. At that point you get molds, mildews and more nastiness.

Have you ever heard of a water softener? One place we lived _everyone_ had a water softener. It looked kind of like a big tub, which was filled with special salt pellets, I think. What it does is remove minerals from the water. With the minerals in, it's _hard_ water and soap doesn't work very well because it doesn't get sudsy. It's hard to get clean in the shower. So the water softener takes care of that problem.

Water softeners are pretty common in southern Arizona where the water has lots of calcium (hardness) in it. Without a softener, you get spots on dishes and glassware after washing it, a crust builds up on the heating coils in your water heater and other appliances that heat water and so on. This tends to be an issue wherever the water supply is wells pumping up groundwater.

Front loading washers make a lot of sense since they allow the clothes to tumble wash without the need for the agitator shaft in the middle. This saves wear and tear on your clothes. They can also operate with much less water, as the clothes aren't required to be completely immersed in the water. The downside is the door can't be opened once you start the cycle without draining all the water out first, so not easy to add a piece of clothing that you might have forgotten once the washing is in progress. Not sure if this may differ between models.

We often have more than one refrigerator in the US. In most houses there will be the full size one in the kitchen and usually a second full size one in the basement or sometimes the garage. In apartments you will often find the second refrigerator to be a mini fridge- which is typically the normal size you find in the UK. We also commonly have deep freezers- they can be upright looking like a fridge, or a large chest you open from the top. While in the UK I have noticed there's still some people without and freezer whatsoever which was shocking to me. We love freezing foods here. One thing about the big washers, is that they are tall. If you are short (like me 4' 10") you will find it very difficult to reach down to the bottom of the wash drum to take the wet clothes out. What we need from GB is a house elf so they can go in and retrieve the socks from every load of washing. In my condo I have a washer/dryer combo (both front loading). The washer is on the bottom and the dryer sits on top. They work well for one or two people and saves floor space. Also, what we have for parts of the country is a humidifier. The air is very dry where I live so you need a humidifier to add water vapor to the air so your nose, hair & skin don't dry out. Air conditioning is usually part of the central heating system in houses here, not an independent unit. There may also be a built-in dehumidifier on the system. I believe people in the US have more than one way to make coffee. A larger coffee maker may be had for entertaining large groups. Top loading washing machines are harder on clothes. Front loaders cause less wear during washing. Our washer and dryer are raised on plinths with a large drawer that holds the soap and any other supplies needed to do the wash. They are in a small room off the kitchen. We have a large fridge in our auxiliary kitchen in the attached garage that dispenses ice and filtered water. We have two smaller fridges in the main kitchen that are under the counter. One for breakfast and one for lunch items. Our house is of a modest size.

I'm always afraid of a front load washer stopping and getting stuck in the middle of a cycle. You can't just open the door and fix it because water rushes out. My one complain about top load is the deepness of these new washers. I'm under 5ft so I *literally* have to get my feet off the ground to reach in enough to get the clothes on the bottom. Dehumidifiers operate off of the same principles as an air conditioner. They are essentially air conditioners that operate at a very low speed so as not to cool the air, but remove the moisture. Thermal dynamics states that heat will always migrate to cold. When you remove an item from the refrigerator, it can begin to sweat. The hotter moisture in the air (Humidity) is collecting against the colder item. This is how a dehumidifier works. Air is forced slowly across an evaporator coil, and the moisture collects against the cold coil, then drains into a pan, or a drain hose directed to a drain.

Not sure how that is helpful but I can put the dryer on wrinkle shield if I'm not home and it will run the dryer for a few minutes every hour so the clothes don't get wrinkles while sitting in the dryer all day. I never use it but it is nice that it text me when I am home so I know to go swap it over or empty it. Also, the house we just sold had a fridge with the fridge on top and freezer drawer on bottom but it also had a drink drawer in the middle between the top and bottom. We go through a ton of drinks so it was nice having that drawer that held 48 standard 12oz cans. Really miss it but now we have an extra fridge in the garage just for drinks and bottled water and extra space for frozen foods in the freezer (usually just ice cream being in Florida). This is so fascinating! I'm a Texan living in the Northwest, and 1) we had to get a dehumidifier a few years ago after I got very ill for two years straight. We found black mold hiding in places we couldn't see until we moved a lot of furniture and drapes out. We noticed that the windows kept collecting condensation. But after we treated our home and rearranged everything, there was never any more condensation again, and I got totally well. I think dehumidifiers are relatively new in American homes--didn't know what they were growing up. 2) Water and ice on the outside of refrigerators are relatively new, too. They've been around maybe 20 years or so. 3) Top loader washing machines--yes, always had those, but also have lived with front loaders. 4) "Washeteria"! Have not heard that in years... Yes, that's how they used to call them in Texas. 5) Dryers -- we never had one when I was a kid. We just hung things on the line. I still hang things on the line when the weather's good. 6) Finally, wonder if he's encountered huge freezers. A lot of people have them if they store a lot of food. Personally, I wouldn't want one because of stories about dead bodies stored in them... But one of my grandmothers used to keep one. Thanks if you read this far. Just needed to express myself...

Dehumidifiers: many people in the US have basements. Basements can easily grow mold on walls and ceilings without a dehumidifier. Water dispensers in fridges, although slow, are filtered. The filters are about $25 and eliminates the need for bottled water. Stop loading washers are more balanced and don't require weights (often concrete) to keep it still. Not all houses in the USA have basements. I live in Texas and there are a few reasons why most homes in Texas don’t have basements. In some areas, you would hit bedrock which is too expensive to dig out a basement. In some areas, the water table is too high. In some areas, the type of soil expands & contracts too much depending on rain vs. drought. If basements were economically buildable & would last, they could be a good place to hide out from tornados.

The main reason the water comes out so slowly from the refrigerator is that it's running through a very long 1/4 inch plastic tube. The water either being held in the tube, or slowly passing through it within the refrigerator, is what chills it. Water at a faucet is usually being delivered by at least a 1 inch pipe. Therefore the maximum volume/time (speed) that water can flown through the refrigerator is 1/4th the volume/time as a faucet.

Dehumidifiers serve multiple purposes in that by taking moisture out of the air, they not only prevent mold/mildew, but they help keep you cool in the summer. The higher humidity during summer months means that you can't sweat as much, and since sweating is the most effective way our bodies get rid of heat (water can hold a lot of heat, and as it evaporates off your skin it takes that heat with it), removing that moisture from the air helps keep you cool without having to use something like AC (AC also acts as a dehumidifier too, which is part of how it cools stuff down). High humidity is actually really dangerous. As you get closer to 100% humidity, where the air literally can't hold anymore water in it, your body stops being able to regulate your temperature and you start to get the effects of a dangerously high fever - it can even kill you in temperatures you wouldn't even think of as hot. The US Army did a study years ago where they dropped a bunch of soldiers off in an area of the world that naturally has super high humidity (I think an area of the Amazon rain forest?) to see how long they could effectively fight in those conditions, and within 8 hours they had to fly them out by helicopter. Within 2 hours many had become unable to do basic activities and by 6 hours many had passed out and the rest had collapsed and were unable to stand up.

We also have what is called a Humidifier, which puts water steam into the air to add moisture to the home, usually used in winter when it gets dry from the heating and static like (when you touch something metal and get zapped, means need moisture in the air). Air purifiers remove toxins, dust, smoke, dander from pets, invisible bug things or mites out of your home's breathing air, making it smell fresh, clean and crisp, just have to replace the filter from time to time.

Front load washers are much more efficient than the top load. That top load washer has to be FILLED with water. Also, front load washers here can hold just as much or even more than a top load.

Some refrigerators give you a choice of ice cubes or crushed ice. Front loading washing machines usually wash better. You can also stack a washing machine and a dryer.

Before air Conditioners we had water coolers. USA also has stacked washer & dryer. The washer is top loading & the dryer is above it & is high enough so it's ok to open the washer lid but low enough so you don't have to stand on a step stool to reach it. Reason the Refrigerator w/water in the door is so slow is so kids don't make a big mess of water on the floor.

My front-loading washer & dryer are elevated on matching storage base so there's no bending over or reaching down into a machine. I really prefer mine to the old top-loading washers I've used in the past. It's actually more energy and water efficient than top-loaders I've used in the past. I don't have a basement or a laundry room or a guest room. I DO have a laundry cabin with a futon, a spare refrigerator, a storage cabinet, a utility sink, & some storage shelves) and a guest cabin (I live in a 96-year-old log cabin made from young redwood trees here in the coast redwoods of California, incidentally in one of the two counties that are home to Silicon Valley so I get the best of both worlds). One of the things about travel to foreign countries is that people often don't see the countryside or inside homes of people. I've visited two dozen foreign countries and I think the only homes I've been in are homes/estates converted to B&Bs in Ireland, New Zealand, & Australia. A couple others were probably converted long ago like a like pensione where I stayed once in Venice, others likely in Amsterdam, Marrakesh, and one cool place in Paris near Place des Vosges that was actually the horse stable of 17th century royals' horses! It's not the same experience as renting someone's house there.

I have a front load washer. It uses a fraction of the water vs top loader washers. Washer & dryer are in the the "washhouse" a separate room for the washer and dryer.

Never had one before but I heard that espresso machines are the best coffee makers. What got is a good old fashioned French press. I just like a basic cup of coffee.

Top loader washing machine have the advantage of allowing cloth to soak in water with detergent to help with stained work clothes. Also they do not mold up like side loaders do, however side loaders use less water and do actually clean cloth better. But allowing your laundry to soak in water/detergent cleans the cloth just fine.

I never used a dehumidifier living in California but when I moved to Japan our mattress, blankets, and walls got wet and molded so quickly so I was introduced to dehumidifiers by other residents in my area.

The cool water is also filtered, I thought it was not required…. Till I got one Coffee grinder…. If you get a coffee machine… you really need to get decent coffee…. Either go to Starbucks, or better yet get a coffee grinder As others have mentioned… a lot of places have very hard water…. Which makes a water softener very much appreciated A micro wave and a toaster oven are in most every American kitchen….. and a blender too Water softener

My parents actually have a stacked front loading washer/dryer for their laundry. Also is a space saving feature after my youngest sibling moved out, they downsized.

In America we went to front load but the thing broke down in two years. The top load got bigger to try to get us back to buying top loads. For half the price I bought a top load with twice the capacity, game changer. The ice maker we empty into a cleaned ice cream bucket and put it in the freezer. The air purifiers are amazing too. Garbage disposal. Microwave/vent or over stove microwave.

Dehumidifiers get rid of the damp, they are great for libraries and where you store musical instruments, as well as air conditions. The main thing about the fridge water is the filtration. The water quality is lacking in many locations, so having filtered water ready at hand is rather nice without having to buy water separately at the grocery store. We don't have a basement, but we do have a huge garage and carport, it used to be a daycare, right now it is storage, but eventually it will be a craft house when we finally get around to it. Lol, I think it is about the size of an average UK house. It does have a kitchen, two bathrooms, but otherwise it is just a big room with an attic.

Side load washing machines use about 1/4 the amount of water as a too loader. In addition, they are easier on the clothes because the clothes clean by rolling over itself whereas the top loaders really damage the clothing.

Side load washers use less water. Side load and top load take up the same space individually, but side load also allows for stacking.

Having a dehumidifier is the next best thing to having air conditioning. Just taking the moisture out of the air make it more comfortable even if the temperature stays the same. and! Trying to serve instant coffee will not end well in America. But, another appliance than we have is Central Vacuuming and Central Stereo. Though neither is a standard feature but well worth the cost.
