Exams are different than tests and usually imply that it is more in depth, longer, and more difficult. For example your normal random Friday test would be a test, your midterms would be an exam, and your random Monday 5 minute tests would be a “pop quiz”

We have budgies here as well. I'm not a bird person, but I think there's a difference between parakeets and budgies, if I remember correctly. And we don't spell yogurt with an H. Hippy and Crunchy are different. Crunchy refers to someone who's all about the organic and/or healthy, all natural foods and materials. Hippy is someone who's all about freedom of expressions, alternate life styles, free love, artsy.

Former American firefighter response: Fire Engines carry the water, hoses and have a pump. They hook up to the hydrant. Then you have Fire Trucks which carry the ladders, have either a motorized ladder (anywhere from 50 feet to 110 feet high) or a raised platform, and extraction and venting tools (such as chain saws, hooks, etc). A fire truck only carries enough hose to hook up to a fire engine to get water up to the nozzle at the top of the motorized ladder or platform for spraying water onto a roof. The two crews also have separate jobs on a fire scene. Hosemen (Engine crew) search for the fire and extinguish it. Truckies (Truck crew) search for victims (extraction) and cut holes in the roof (ventilation). Ventilation occurs only when the Engine crew says they're starting to attack the fire, then ventilation happens so that the two combined create a chimney effect to get the poisonous smoke out of the house. There are two other types of teams. RIT and Rescue. Rescue trucks carry equipment to cut cars apart after they crash, and also stabilization devices to keep structures from falling over if they become compromised, and also lifesaving equipment for water rescue situations. RIT are specialized teams of rescue personnel that stand by during a fire and they have rescue equipment for one reason only ... In case the radio call comes through with the dreaded words "firefighter down". Then RIT goes in with no other purpose except to get to that firefighter and get them out. Question for any British Firefighters: do you differentiate between equipment and crews?

When I was in the Army, we called the infantry guys that walk everywhere "Crunchies" because that is the sound they make if you run over them. We didn't actually run over them, but it was a way of saying we were better than them because we had vehicles.

Jelly has been sieved and strained through a Cheese Cloth giving it a translucent quality. Jell-O is a popular brand name of Gelatin. Here Gelatin usually means the unflavored gelatin was used and Jell-O means a fruit flavored gelatin was used to make it.

I was a college professor for eight years here in the U.S. I would make a difference between a test and an exam, just so my students better understood what would be on each. We'd have weekly quizzes on what was taught that week, a test every few weeks at the end of each chapter or section, and then two exams, one mid-term exam that encompassed everything up to that point, and one final exam that encompassed the entire course. But usually test and exam are used interchangeably.

Jelly is used for anything that uses a fruit puree, jam still has some of the visible fruit pulp, and preserves have distinguishable pieces of the original fruit. There's also marmalade but I'm not sure where that fits in. For Jelly/Jell-O, the latter is a brand; more generally we call it gelatin. For exam/test, that's also a gradient. You might take a quiz every day or after a lesson. Tests might cover a whole chapter and require a day or two of prep time. An exam would cover a larger unit of time with days' worth of prep time.

Crunchy was a term used on the east coast in the 90s, I believe. It referred to young, environmentally conscious people (who presumably ate granola, lived in Oregon, and wore birkenstocks.) Where I lived, hippies were older people who came of age in the 60s.

Sometimes tests are given by someone besides the teacher. It is called proctoring the test so the person who supervises the test is called a proctor because they might not actually be the teacher.

Anesthesiologist is doctor specialized in putting people to sleep. Nurses start the IV that the anesthesiologist uses to administer the medication. A chicken cooked in an oven we call baked chicken. In America, we do say "tap" but it mainly refers to beer taps at bar, or detachable ones for kegs and the like. The ones attached to water pipes are faucets.

Buying it pre-cooked from the grocery store I'd say rotisserie chicken, but if i made it in my oven at home I'd call it a roast chicken, and if I cut it up and cooked it as separate pieces, I'd call it baked chicken. And if I went to a restaurant, they may refer to what they serve as broasted.

There is a term for this type of fancy gym in the US. It’s called a health center or fitness center. Sometimes it’s called a fitness spa, health complex, fitness complex, health club, or fitness club. There are branding aspects to this to differentiate the fancier clubs from more basic gyms.

Jam and jelly are different. My grandma used to make both. Jam has seeds of whatever berry you’re using to make it. Jelly is more purified and is clear. Preserve are made from the foam off the top of whatever you’re making because it will set up and still be delicious. My grandma didn’t waste anything.

Jello is a brand name of gelatin--the most famous here in the US--so we just call it Jello no matter who makes the gelatin. Same thing with Kleenex brand tissues--I will ask someone to hand me a "Kleenex" after I sneeze as often as I ask for a tissue. And skipping is an entirely different activity that you don't need a rope to do. What do Brits call that? I don't go to my "leisure centre" to push around weights. No leisure (lezzure as they say it) in that, pal. If you are there for lezzure, you're in the wrong place. We call them roast chickens, too, unless they are cooked on a rotisserie, then it is a rotisserie chicken.

Crunchy is an adjective to describe hippies in reference to the trope of hippies' propensity to eat granola. But hippies are not commonly called "crunchy" as a noun. My brother his family lived in hippie Christian communes for a number of years. And since then they've continued to make their home in Humboldt County (a strange half-and-half of fishermen/lumberjacks/farmers and hippie artists/musicians/recreational crop enthusiasts). A proctor is basically someone who hands out an important test, watches you take it, and provides instruction on that test. It could be a test like the SAT, PSAT, ACT, or AP exam.

We also tend to use "exam" and "test" somewhat interchangeably, usually using the former for higher-end stuff. I don't know if rounders has it, but "wiffle ball" very specifically refers to a baseball-like sport played by kids using a ball that is made of plastic and has more holes than a block of Swiss cheese. Lewis, decades ago around the whole south we called RV's, "Motorhomes", but after the huge Motor Coaches came along, I've started hearing more people call the smaller ones RV's.

You’re right, we call them blinkers more colloquially and turn signal more formally.

Where I live in the USA- Jelly is something made from fruit juice, but does not contain fruit (eg. Grape Jelly). Jam is fruit and juice, may also be called preserves (eg. Strawberry jam, Strawberry preserves). Jello is a gelatin dessert which can contain fruit or not. Jelly and Jam also do not contain Gelatin, which makes Jello. I hope that helps some one.
