I raise chickens. I don't refrigerate my eggs because I leave them unwashed, which preserves the natural coating called the "bloom". The bloom seals the shell and is present when the egg is laid. Commercial eggs for sale to the public must be washed, which removes the bloom. Since egg shells are porous, bacteria would be able to enter after the eggs are washed, thus the refrigeration requirement in the U.S.. Edited for clarity: I live in Texas.

Actually no, we may keep our eggs for a month before we use them. Plus grocery stores want to put the longest use by date they can get away with on the packaging. And our eggs are transported quite a bit longer frequently ( I spent multiple years over the road in a semi truck). So we refrigerate and package differently for longevity and safety at the end usage. Because believe me folks on either side of the pond the eggs getting washed if it has poop on it.

Once I went into the store and was looking for some kind of meat and found that while weighing and marking the prices on packages of London Broil hunks of meat someone had made a mistake in the cost. $1.50 per roast? Oh, yes please! I bought as many as I could afford. I turned them into steaks, stew meat, chili, and anything I could think of. It made my kids very happy since their dad is rather cheap when it comes to giving grocery money.

@@claudias2948 Yeah, the average for american families is to buy all the pantry (long shelf life) items once a month and things like dairy per week. Many families have a dedicated freezer for things like meat and tend to buy in bulk when they go on sale. The more budget conscious, particularly larger families, tend to pre-plan meals and use the freezer to DIY frozen dinners/snacks, between employment and children activities/school, many just don't have the time. Of course, all in all, most Americans shop based on when their paycheck or foodstamps/ebt/welfare is paid out. And of course, there's numerous alternatives through different household demographics and regions, there's been a rising trend of young professionals (single, two adult and/or one to two children) relying on prepackaged meal delivery programs & grocery subscription boxes... after quarantine, we saw a huge rise in the availability and diversity of these programs that were once largely limited to special dietary needs for the elderly, disabled or those trying to lose weight. Many of major grocery chains also have expanded their programs similar to this as well. Still, most of them will pop into a regular story for dairy and other limited shelf life items.

I live in the USA. I live alone, am elderly and don't eat much. I spend about $200 a month or less for the whole month. That's not counting taxable items (non-food). I freeze meat in small amounts, stock up on potatoes and veggies. Sometimes I buy fruit, but it doesn't last a whole month unless it's canned or frozen. I always have left-over food and sometimes, feed my nephew when he visits. I think American prices are higher than the UK.

Here's the reason for the sales tax not being included in the price in the US: the sales tax is different from county to county. Where I'm currently sitting the sales tax is 6.5%. If I get in my car and drive less than 10 minutes north, I'm in a different county where the sales tax is 7.5%. In the UK, the VAT is fixed nationwide so it is easy for stores to factor in the VAT and set the prices accordingly whereas in the US, a chain of grocery stores will have trouble setting a fixed price so the checkout machine calculates it when you pay. Our biggest normal grocery store in my state (not Walmart, because that's not a grocery store), Publix, has stores in just about every county and Florida has 67 counties.
@Kim-427
@Kim-427 3 месяца назад
But,They make it such a big deal it’s really not. What they don’t understand is many of us shop once a month. You are prepared to spend a hundred dollars or more if it’s a monthly shop. So I can speak for me only but I think others will agree. If you’re spending that much you have a few dollars over for taxes. The few dollars in tax is not enough to cause a problem. If you shop for a week and you budget 60 dollars tax may be important but it’s so little that it doesn’t matter. Not many of us go to the grocery store with just enough. And I will say again not every grocery item is taxed.

Many states do not allow sales taxes on food ingredients. If you go buy a cheeseburger, you'll pay tax on that. If you go buy the mince, bun, cheese, lettuce, tomato, etcetera yourself, you won't pay tax on any of those. You will still pay tax on things like cleaning items and those ready-to-eat cakes and such.
@jovetj
@jovetj 16 дней назад
It's not hard for stores to calculate the tax and factor it in. But it is a pain if the tax rate changes, and they occasionally do. What, I think, really happened is that the retailers do not want to include the taxes so that their prices seem lower. Once one retailer did that, all the rest had to follow so to stay competitive.

We pasterize our eggs in the shell removing the protective layer on the outside of the shell. So they must be refrigerated. If you own your own chikens you can leave them out on the counter. Or get them fresh from a small farm that does not pasterize the eggs. I use to have a boss who had her own chickens and when they started laying like crazy we all got to take home fresh eggs that lasted on the counter for weeks.

The eggs are not pasteurized. That is a heating process. Chickens in the US are not vaccinated for salmonella, so to retard the growth of the bacteria they are refrigerated. Additionally, the USDA requires eggs sold commercially in the US to be washed in a sanitizer solution to kill bacteria on the egg surface. Washing the egg removes a natural coating on the eggs commonly called the bloom. Removing the bloom allows the porous egg shell in theory, to let bacteria get into the egg. Personally, I have raised chickens and have always refrigerated my eggs. I only washed them if they were dirty. My Mom never washed her eggs or refrigerated them right away, and at one point had a horrible salmonella infection. Probably because one or all of her chickens carried the bacteria, and passed it into the eggs.

We absolutely have cheese twists here. Don’t know what part of the country this couple is from, maybe where they’re from the stores are very basic. When I shop, I’m shopping for 3 adults. I shop for produce weekly from a produce market, not a supermarket. It’s much cheaper. Produce prices in American grocery stores are so high. Probably $80 a week for produce and dairy. The rest of the shopping I do every 2 weeks, 3 if I could stretch it. Costs me about $350-$400 each time. I think Europeans tend to shop several times a week a week and buy what they need at for those couple of days and then shop again. Most of us here don’t do that. It’s usually a weekly shop.

prices are so drastically different depending on where you live. My brother lives in the south (well, around the northernmost part of the south) where there are very few stores, people, or much of anything anywhere. a medium size bag of Lay's plain potato chips costs less than $2.00 there. I live in the highly populated coastal northeast, and that very same bag of chips costs about $6.00ish maybe $5 if its on sale.. and each of our states have only a 0.35% difference in sales tax. so its not even the tax that makes the prices so different.

No one here calculates prices with taxes. We just buy. Taxes vary by state, like in NJ, which is 6%, except food and clothing have no taxes added to it. So when we go to the supermarket it's the price that it is. 50 for what a week? I normally spend 200 for 2 weeks.

California is relatively cheap when it comes to groceries, given it's one the major agricultural and ranch producers in the country. It actually becomes more expensive among the flyover. Albeit, to really save you're buying most of the your produce direct rather than going through the trading on pennies system that exports most states' goods from state to state reducing the price benefit at the store... let alone the sheer amount imported from outside of the nation, so we can have seasonal foods all year around. Never mind the over regulation by the govt that has plagued our farmers and ranchers for decades now... especially the aggressive abuse of the epa to reclaim water rights on private properties.

It’s unfortunate that no one goes to our regular grocery stores. In the south and some Midwest states there is Kroger. In the south they have Publix that would be maybe what the UK would call sort of high end. We have Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. I wish they could experience our just grocery stores. It’s funny how they call all their stores shops. In my mindset and in my city a “shop” is considered a small type of store a boutique etc. Nothing large is considered a shop. The word shop for us is what you do in the grocery store shop. Lol

I'm an American and I can tell you that in the 60s supermarkets and grocery stores did not have to refrigerate the eggs but now the FDA makes them do it and now they must be washed to maintain quality and prevent food-borne illnesses at least that's what they say but I know if you cover them with a thin layer of lard or similar product to prevent air from getting in they will stay fresh for a long time I have done this and ate them after 8 weeks and they were fine. Our government says refrigerating them will keep them at their AA rating for 15 weeks while unrefrigerated eggs only last one week before dropping down to a B rating. Also, Fanta, soda pop is sold in the U.S.A. Therefore, I believe that the lady shopper passed on it because of this and selected the other which is not sold here.

I’m American and am single. I probably go to the supermarket once every two weeks. I consider it a PITA. I don’t think animal milk anymore so that cut down on having to go as often. It’s not uncommon for people to buy in bulk then shift smaller portions to freezer bags. I do think with chicken and some produce like peppers, onions, garlic. Also in my culture most people produce some of their own food to a degree. Or we don’t necessarily get it all from a supermarket. Several of my relatives operate fruit stands which is a go between business between farmers and customers. This is different from a farmers market which are also a thing because they don’t raise the produce and the businesses are open six days a week.

You are correct about some grocery stores are less expensive than others. I shop at two stores. One always has great deals and the other always has discounts if you clip specials on the store website (I’ve saved over $40 in one trip before). I’m a Senior Citizen and eat very well on $300 a month in Colorado. Other areas of the Country and cities cost more. We often have larger salaries than the UK. The average in my town is over $80,000. A couple of things that I know have been pointed out to you elsewhere, but Walmart is NOT a grocery store. It's a discount department store that added groceries as one of their departments. So talking about it being so huge is misleading. Yes, a SuperWalmart is massive, but it is first and foremost a discount department store, selling everything from prescription drugs to household products to auto tires to baby furniture and clothes for the entire family to yes, groceries. Oh, and you can get new eyeglasses, and often have a family portrait done as well. My husband and I, now, after the massive rise in prices since Covid, spend about $350 a month on groceries, just for the to of us. We do our big shop once a month, and then a few times per month we go back for fresh milk, veg and fruits. Or if one of us gets a hankerin' for something we just haven't got the means to make at home. If our kids are going to be home for a few days we end up nearly doubling that in food costs, but much of that is getting all their favorite local takeout food. Prior to Covid, we spent no more $200 a month. I should point out that we work hard to shop sales and maximize our purchasing power by keeping our freezer filled with our favorite meats, taking advantage of sale prices like Buy One get One (or sometimes TWO!) Free specials. We never pay full price for much of anything. In our area, we don't have any high end grocery stores. In fact, we often shop at all 4 of the supermarkets in our area, getting specials or hard to find items at one over the other. For instance, Aldi will have a pound of butter for $1.99 a lb, on a week when other stores are charging $3.29 or more. When we see a special like that, we'll buy as much as possible, because it won't go bad before we can use it. We've been fortunate recently in that our neighbors with chickens gave us a couple of dozen eggs and then just the other day, our nephew and his family visited and gave us 3 dozen eggs from their flock. Eggs have been dancing at around $4 a dozen lately, so that's a huge savings. We've also benefited by having hosted two family picnics over the past two weeks, where much of the leftovers were left for us. We're sick of picnic food for a while, but free food is always nice! Next picnic won't be until the 4th of July so hopefully we'll be ready to start again!

Like, I just saw a video in which an American claimed that we don't have hot water bottles in the US. Huh? Of *course* we have hot water bottles! I grew up with one. It lived in the bathroom closet. Admittedly, my family did sort of abandon its use in favor of heating pads eventually, but we nonetheless did *have* one. That sort of thing happens all the time. (Other things that I grew up with that I've heard both Americans and Europeans claim that we "don't have" here in the US include: Duvet covers. Egg cups. Soft-boiled eggs at all. *Poached* eggs. Tea pots and tea strainers; also tea cozies. Console sinks. Mixer taps AND, weirdly enough, separate taps -- to be fair, these claims did come from two separate people, but it was still rather disconcerting -- apparently, we can't have *any* sort of tap arrangement here in the US. Hand-held shower heads. Electric kettles. The Oxford comma. Cream. Casement windows. *Open* windows. Steam heating. Residential housing without central air conditioning. Kitchen sinks without garbage disposal units. And, of course, sarcasm.)

As a Canadian, Uk food is very inexpensive, everything in Canada is at least twice the price even cookies are 5-7 $ a small box and the crappiest ones at that, white bread is 5$ minimum, so good bread is more like 7$ minimum, cheese is around 10$/ 100 grams, meat and dairy is very expensive, eggs are around 5 - 9 $ a dozen, good eggs are around 10 -12$ a dozen, milk 5$ for 2 litres, nuts are crazy expensive, coffee is about 15 - 25$ per pound, alcohol is about 3 times the price of in the USA, so about 5 times the price that in Europe.
