I had this same situation happen with us on 86, 90 minute stretch without any decent places to pull over to get gas that are close to the highway so it was a trip through the automated car wash because 86 is littered with lakes and other wetlands, which attracts the bugs.

Ya, on the other hand that does seem to be a thing in the UK. Woke up one morning at our hotel and our rental car windshield was covered in bird doo. Tried our best with the wipers, but we were going to stop for gas anyways. No squeegee. Asked the clerk about window cleaning supplies and she looked at us like we had 3 heads. Eventually found us a bucket and (I think) paper towels. Do all drivers just carry around Windex and paper towels in their cars in the UK?

It's not very easy to get to the water at Crater Lake because the sides are incredibly steep, equivalent to walking down and then back up 65 flights of stairs. There is one trail down but it's steep and not for everyone. It's a volcanic crater, so you would be going into a volcano, which is pretty cool. The island in the middle is a volcanic cone.

Most people here aren't calling that a cowboy hat. The brim is too short, we'd call that a fedora or Indy hat (Indiana Jones). Most casinos in the U.S. are on Indian reservations. That looked more like a controlled fire, if it was a wild fire there would most likely be more of a police presence to help guide people that need to evacuate the area. Jeeps are less aerodynamic so more bugs do go splat on the window.

Dude, if you are into nature, Oregon is world class. Come to Portland and do road trips. From Portland you can go to the beach, mountains, Columbia Gorge and desert within an hour or two. You need to check it out. I had a bunch of UK friends back in the 1990's and they choose Oregon/Portland over the rest of the country. The weather is much more temperate than the South and East. Literally 100's of movies have been shot in Oregon (check it out in the Wiki). Oregon is like several countries in one. The Portland area is big City with rivers flowing through it. The Eastern Side is high desert, the Coast has some of the most beautiful beaches/vistas in the world. For grins check out Haystack Rock at Canon Beach and Bandon in Souther Oregon. Southern Oregon and Northern California have attempted to become their own state since the have more in common than they do with their respective states. Even the west side of Portland is radically different than the east side. I forgot the Cowboy stuff, the Pendelton Roundup is a huge world class rodeo that is in its 114th year.🏇

Bro, bugs on the windshield like that are just NORMAL here. Here's a tip. You use the squeegee at the gas station with the cleaning solution, and you wet the windshield thoroughly, leaving the solution on the windshield for several minutes to soften the bugs. Then you go over it again with the soft, foam part of the squeegee to pick and scrape off the bugs. Then you go over it a third time with the squeegee blade to scrape the water and the rest of the junk that's leftover. Put some pressure on the squeegee so you don't leave any lines across your line of sight once you're back inside the car.

You learn pretty quick when you live in bear country, yes you always need to be aware, but bears really are just as afraid of us and therefore will avoid contact. You just wear a little bell on your shoelaces walking/hiking off the road system to give them a heads up to your presence and not startle them. Attacks are so incredibly rare and when they do happen, it's most often because someone got between a sow and her cubs.

Yes that's a mountain, Mt. Hood. That's not a wild fire but a controlled burn to prevent wild fires in the dry season. I live in this part of Oregon and know this road like the back of my hand. Wild fire season can get really bad with the smoke, but it's not May. The road that was closed is the north entrance to Crater lake and can be closed because of snow 6-8 months a year. The south entrance stays open all year, but weather conditions can be extreme with the snow. Crater Lake gets 40+ ft of snow in the winter. That toilet has that tunnel entrance because the building will get completely buried in snow. The reason you can't get closer this time of year the snow is slippery or brake off and the fall over the edge would kill you.I've been to Crater Lake many times and this RU-vid video is the best I've found..ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GFskQm2vAV0.html

Portland to Bend over Mt Hood is about 3 hours, then another 2+hours to Crater Lake. Warm Springs is an Indian Reservation. That would be a controlled burn in May. The North entrance to Crater Lake is usually still closed in May. The South entrance is open year round. People have died falling a few feet from where they were at the Rim, it's very dangerous around the rim of the crater. Not really a swimming lake. There is a boat in the summer but it's quite a steep descent to get there. It's chilly but much warmer than when that snow was falling, takes a while for the snow to melt. The cabin on the ranch is classic Oregon.

Did nobody warn the poor guy that you need to check ahead to make sure that the roads to Crater Lake are open if you're not traveling in summer? Surely guidebooks mention that fact! It's only May during this video - early May even, I think. How did he not know that there was a chance the roads might not be clear yet? The pictures you usually see of people at Crater Lake are taken in *summer,* Lewis! He's chosen to visit out of season, that's why it's all cordoned off like that. He's lucky he was able to get to Rim Village at all so early in the season. Even getting that far is sometimes iffy still in early May.

@@themourningstar338 I do too, but it is one of those things that you have to know to know, you know? 😄 It was something that I had to learn to do after I moved here from the east coast, so I'm not surprised at all that a Scotsman wouldn't think to do it on his own. What baffles me is the idea that none of the resources he used to plan this trip informed him of the necessity of doing that. Maybe people just don't use guidebooks anymore these days, I don't know, but surely the internet resources that have taken their place *still* should have some introductory segments to explain stuff like that to visitors? It's hard for me to imagine any place that recommends Crater Lake as a place for tourists to visit *not* also explaining that that the road he initially tried to take there is closed until summer! Or that it's a good idea to check road conditions before driving across rural Oregon. I'm sure that the relevant Lonely Planet mentions those things (along with all the usual "tip your server" non-specific USA advice). Whatever internet travel pages are emerging to take the place of guidebooks like that really need to step up their game!
@themourningstar338
@themourningstar338 5 месяцев назад
@@elkins4406 Yeah, I get what you're saying. I don't know what resources he used for the trip. Most likely they wanted to see Crater Lake from hearing about it or seeing pictures, and didn't look up any particulars, if I had a guess (I think you're right that being a Scotsman, he simply didn't think about certain things). But I've watched most of Shaun and Tekka's US trip videos, and overall they do a pretty good job with their trip planning. They just tend to make some silly mistakes to do with things they don't know about, which is understandable. I think the thing that would have helped them the most would have been to get some road trip pointers from their American patreons. Then someone could have explained to them things like there are window wash stations at the pumps of every gas station. Or to forget about renting the "most American" cars they can think of because Jeeps and Mustangs suck for long distances (and Jeeps particularly suck on the highway), and to instead rent something comfy that handles well. Or how important it is to check road conditions and weather, and to check for road closures in the winter/spring. Or explained the agricultural checkpoint stations when driving into Cali... stuff like that. That would have helped avoid most of the issues they had.

Surely you noticed the evergreen fir trees that flock the slopes of the Cascades along the western side of Washington and Oregon states. The eastern side of both states is a desert, the Cascade mountain range separating the two. As the cold Pacific air blows up the western slopes of the Cascades, lots of rain falls during the winter in the lower elevations, but as the elevation climbs, snow begins to fall... Once the air flows over the Cascades, the rain and snow stops. it's the same with the coastal mountains and Sierra Nevada in California. Trees on one side of the mountains, lots of desert on the other side. Most of America's weather patterns starts from the Bering Sea/North Pacific west of the Rockies, while lots of Arctic cold air and Gulf warm air from the south meet to create towering thunderstorms and tornadoes east of the Rockies... Basic American weather patterns west of the Rockies, and east of the Rockies... There is a reason why America's backbone of the Rockies is called the Continental Divide...

Did they not go inside the Crater Lake Visitor Center? Every National Park has a visitor center with interpretative displays, video presentations, park ranger presentations, and sometimes a small museum. The park rangers and park staff can recommend what to see and do in the area. Several of the National Parks have roads that are closed 8 to 10 months of the year due to snow (Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Mt. Rainier, Glacier, Rock Mtn., North Cascades, Olympic, Lassen Volcanic, Denali, etc.). Fire season in the Northwest starts in June and peaks in August. The fire they drove through was most likely a "prescribed fire" (controlled burn). There were probably orange or yellow signs near the road or electronic display boards that warned about the fire. They likely didn't notice them. The Warm Springs Indian Reservation is one of the larger reservations (#26 out of over 300) by land area in the US. The formally called "Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs" Reservation in north central Oregon is the largest Native American reservation in the state, covering 1,019 square miles. The reservation is home to the Warm Springs, Wasco, and Paiute tribes.

Crater Lake is my favorite place in the world. I've been caught in a blizzard in late June there. The lake is so blue, with 2 small islands. The lake is protected and boating is seriously limited. That men's room is often covered by feet of snow and they set up tunnels from the parking lot to the lodge. It's way high on yhe mountain and was formed by a volcanic eruption that blew the top of the mountain off. The place where you asked what are those sticking out: they're volcanic fumaroles. By the way, he spoke of Boring OR and Dull Scotland. When you cross from Astoria OR to Washington state you pass through a place called Dismal Nitch, named by the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Crater Lake was made when a Mount Mazama erupted about 7700 years ago. It's typically a brilliant blue and it is very cold water. Swimming is allowed, but you risk hypothermia if you stay in it too long. Oregon is not all that cold, west' of the Cascade Mountains. Being close to the Pacific, our weather is fairly moderate. BTW, the Pacific is probably the world's biggest air conditioner. As for Mount Hood, it is named for British Admiral Samuel Hood.

It's hard to really take in the actual size of Crater Lake from a picture, when you're standing there in real life looking across that lake and you realize it's over 6 miles across and 20 miles around the rim then you get a better idea of how absolutely enormous it is (for a volcanic crater that is).

There’s a hiking trail leading down to the lake, but it is STEEP. Only the most athletic could climb back up it without pausing to rest, and it’s hard to stop yourself as you descend. They actually have seismic sensors inside the park as an early warning system just in case the area decides to become active again.

About the road closures, it may have been a safety issue due to black ice on the road. Sometimes that happens in our local mountains.
