Thanks for reacting to my video! You can take three steps with the ball in hand, but to run any steps beyond that you have to balance the ball on the stick. You can't pick the ball directly off the ground with your hand, hence you have to scoop it up with the stick. I tried to explain it as best I could with the captions using as few words as possible, so apologies if something got lost.
It was more than likely a battlefield simulation to get young warriors used to melees and violence on the battlefield. Hence the combination of contact, physicality and speed. Two groups rushing at one another with weapons being swung around on an open field. Ancient legendary Irish warriors like Cùchulainn played it as boys and their skills with the hurley and sliotar were legendary.
Living in England for over 20 years now and I’ve tried and tried to get cricket but I’ve failed miserably. I’d watch literally any sport for hours on end but not cricket. I mean not playing because it’s raining and the light isn’t quite the right shade! Then having a break to drink tea and eat fancy cakes (which I believe are quite nice) every half hour no wonder the game lasts for 5 days, I mean come on!
Im Irish, and hurling Is a massive sport and BTW if the ball which is called a slitor goes over the bar it counts as one point and when it goes into the net it's a goal worth 3 point
The ball can go 110mph, its solid with leather casing and helmets only became mandatory a few years ago, people are swinging solid ash wood sticks around the place with full power, trust me you have to be "brave" they don't get paid they do it for fun. I reckon you have a go
It might seem that a player has many options, but outside the skills needed to do them ( not easy) he is being chased, bumped hit by timber and yes fouled all the time, so the top players make it look easier than it really is. Cuts, bruises and damaged fingers are common place. Imagine what it was like before helmets a few years ago!
The part where it said take ball in hand for 3 steps and you said he took 17, the ball wasn't in his hand it was balanced on the hurley ;) The keepers can actually pull off some great saves, pretty sure there a vid on youtube of hurling keeper saves, go find it and there another reaction video. There probably some videos showing more of the hard hits that can happen...it is not uncommon for a hurley (the stick) to get broken on a players shin....you'll also notice they don't wear shinpads (if anyone tried it would be like wearing two massive targets) and helmets were only made mandatory about 10 years ago I think
There is no better feeling than coming on to a ball at full speed, not braking striding, getting the ball in to your hand.... and boom... your gone, with in a few steps your in acres of space and you fire the sliotar straight between the posts. There is something very tribal about that
OK, I need to clear this up, the stick is a Hurl/Hurley, they don't have 3 steps they have 5, when the ball is on your hurl you have unlimited steps, you can bounce it off the ground to be able to put it in your hand again
Ok so this is the low down GOALS: over the bar = 1 point . In the goals = (sometimes) 3 points STEPS: If the ball is on the axe shaped stick you can take as many steps as you want but if it is in your hand you only have 4 steps BATTING: as you saw earlier, the man smashed his hurley because he couldn't catch it so by batting it he could get it to a teammate HOOKING: He stops the player from shooting by hooking his hurley with his own Hope this helps! ( Ps I play in goals but it's not as bad as it seems)
That video is very sanitised and is the cleaned up version of the sport. Believe me you need to brave as hell to play that game. I tried pretty much every sport you can think of and nohing, and I mean nothing even comes close to playing hurling in terms of intensity and being on edge because you know that in the next tackle you could get hurt badly by a hurl (axe shaped stick 😂) coming across your body at full force. Remember this is an amateur sport and these guys have jobs on Monday morning! I like the idea you had of getting rid of the goalposts and just using a soccer style goal. That would be a very interesting thing to try, I’d never even thought of that concept. In my opinion there’s far too many long range points being scored which causes long breaks in play and the art of defending has been reduced.
Hon na hÉireann!! Hurling is absolute great craic (lol not the drug its a slang term for fun in Ireland 😂) Also the 3000+ years of heritage is quite accurate believe it or not. Its very old 🤣
Can't pick the ball up off the ground.. 4 steps with ball in hand you must either hand pass it ( with a striking motion) or carry it on the bás ( end) of the hurl ( axe shaped stick) main tackle is a shoulder to shoulder hit, and yes bravery is essential
They can run with the ball in their hand for no more than four steps but can run all day with the ball on the hurley but can only handle the ball twice before hitting in or they have to ground the ball to start the cycle again.
You can run with it on ur stick and bounce it on your stick for as long as you want, but you can only run with it while its in your hand for 3 steps. The ball is hard as a rock and you can pass/shoot by using ur stick or ur hand
Lovely to see other countries get in on the sport some things they don't explain is that the stick is called a hurl or Hurley and you cannot pick it up off the ground you have to scoop it up with the hurl Also they actually don't get paid as you saw each county plays for their own team and they do it for the love of the sport
You can only run 3 steps once with the ball in your hand but you can run the rest of the way with the ball balanced on the hurley (stick). Also you cannot pick the ball up off the ground with your hand, you have to rise the ball with the hurley from the ground or catch it from the air.
The playing field is 3x a football field, and as such, more ways of passing the ball (Sliotar [slit-tar]) are needed. Hitting it from the hand has the furthest range while hitting it with your hand is the shortest
You cannot pick up the ball off the ground with your hands as you would lose your fingers . The ball is called a Sliotar (pronounced slitter) it's as hard as a rock. If you can balance the ball on the Hurl (stick), you can run the full length of the pitch (175 metres x 85 metres).
Next time you say hurling is not a though sport , maybe get a fue hurls broken off you. If you dont want to do that watch something like :Irish hurling-best fights! Toughest sport on earth, to educate yourself on what happens behind the scenes (ignoring the ruel book). Then you might be able to decide is hurling a game for the though. I would just like to remind you that this is an armature game, it has been around for 3000 years. People play it not for money or fame , instead they play it for their community, their parish, their county, with their friends and neighbour's. Every player is a volunteer, they all have jobs, hurling is a hobby but one that they take very seriously. most players have to travel long distances to get to training several times a week , and they dont get played every extra moment is spent training or travelling to training. It is unfair to say that this is a sport of speed not bravery but every aspect of this game is brave.
Mate it literally says it on the screen 🤣🤣 You can carry the ball in your HAND for only three steps before you have to balance it on the stick (called a hurl btw). You can run for as long as you want with the ball on the hurl haha!
@@anthonyfitzgerald8201 In Galway it’s usually called a Hurl especially in east Galway where it’s the only game in the Parrish. I know in Tipp and Cork etc. it’s called a Hurley.
You can't pick it up off the ground but can catch in the air. And even though you can only carry it in your hand for three seconds you can still get away with 7 or8
You can only carry the ball for three steps, but it can be carried on the hurley much further. The ball can not be lifted from the ground by hand, nor can it be thrown by hand. It can only be taken from the ground with the hurley and then handpassed from player to player by slapping it with an open hand.
It's the same pitch, posts and scoring system as Gaelic football. You can see both games played in London, Leeds and many other places -wherever there are Irish people. There used to be a Gaelic pitch on Hackney Marshes and another in Finsbury Park, another on Wormwood Scrubs, behind the prison. The first two have gone now. I don't know if Wormwood Scrubs is still used. The main venue for the GAA games in London is in Ruislip. Here's a list of GAA clubs in and around London: www.londongaa.org/club-list/#down-13376
You can only hold it in your hand for 3 steps, after which you need to use the hurl (the stick) Croke Park, the main stadium in Dublin for Gaelic Games, is the 4th largest stadium in Europe. Scoring a goal is actually not as easy as you'd think, because the keepers in Hurling aren't right in the head, and make incredible saves. Plus there is a big buzz seeing a player at some weird angle near the sidelines manage to put the sliotar(the ball which is not a soft ball at all) over the bar from 50 yards out from the goal under pressure. This sport is talked about in the most ancient of irish folktales. You should check out the other major Gaelic game in Ireland, Gaelic Football.
As a Lacrosse player both games have some similarities such as the scooping of the ball with the stick and running down the field with the ball in the stick. looks fun to play but I bet it’s not fun getting hit with the ball
You're not allowed to pick the ball off the ground with your hand , or throw it , and you can kick it . A lot of these lads play Gaelic football , and many go to the AFL ! ;)
Couple of things. 1 can't pick the ball off the ground with your hand. 2. Can only take 3 steps with the ball in your hand, after that have to balance it on the hurley (stick) . 3. can't throw it thats why they hit it with their hand. 4. Almost all the same hits are allowed in this as in AFL. 6. There is a Irish version of AFL whuch is basically this sport but with a ball. Once a year an Irish team plays the Aussie team in whats called "International rules".
You CAN'T pick the ball of the ground with your hand And yes you can catch it in the air, but the chances are that while you're reaching out to grab it someone else is swinging at it at 80mph with the 'axe shaped stick' Hurlers are fucking nails my friend
You can't pick up the ball off the ground with your hand. One of the attractions is that it's high scoring. Obviously scores would be smaller if there was just a football goal.
Basically they are only a couple of key rules 1 The ball must not be handled on the ground lifted directly of the ground with the hand,it must be either the stick or foot 2 The ball can not be caught more than once in one possession unless its bounced off the ground 3 The ball is slapped when handpassing never thrown 4 The ball can be carried in the hand for 3 steps 5 No offside except for the goal square 6 Tackling is shoulder to shoulder or with the stick,no rugby or ice hockey like checking 7 The stick must not be dropped ,though it can in the womens game
FYI we also have a game involving a football and they used to have crossover games with the afl called the international rules series. It got cancelled cos it just turned into a kick shit
You are not allowed to pick the ball up from the ground with your hand, and you can only hold it in your hand for three steps, if you have the ball on the stick you can run as much as you want. You only strike with your hand to pass it to your teammates.
All Irish sports are armature. When good you play for your county e2 in Ireland, England is county and so is New York at time of vague recollection. You can't hold the ball in your for HAND for more than 3 seconds but it can be on the end of the hurl (axe shaped stick) as lo g as you you. AFL is dangerous? You're advised to wear a helmet and most do, some don't. There's guys there with wounds that needed 40 stitches. Croke Park when the finals are held only has a capacity of 85,000 people. I think it's the 3rd biggest in Europe. And it's AMATEUR
You can run with the ball on the stick for as long as you want to but when you have the ball in your hand then you can run for three steps with the ball in your hand then but the ball on your stick
