Non military ships are not usually allowed to carry weapons on board their ships especially when going into foreign ports. That is why most of them do not or can not use guns to defend themselves.

The hijacking of the cargo ship Alabama in 2009 was made into a movie. The Captain was played by Tom Hanks. Four Somali pirates boarded a cargo ship with US flag but owned by a Danish shipping company. They kidnapped the Captain and moved him into one of their boats. US Navy sent a destroyer, a frigate and helicopters to rescue the Captain alive. Watch the Movie Captain Phillips.

Yeah, in reality the SEALs proved they can make half mile headshots in the dead of night on choppy seas. Seriously, a Navy SEAL with night vision enhanced scope and gyro-stabilized rifle, is probably the scariest non-laser guided thing the US could send after you.

There was a whole movie about "Captain Phillips" back in 2013. They sometimes attack military vessels in the hopes of capturing it and using it for even more daring pirate adventures, just like what happened in the 1700-1800s. What they fail to understand is that the military tracks those vessels and just pinpoints their location. As for non-lethal weapons, it has to do with a doctrine of no overkill. While personally I have no problem with mounting a GAU-19 and turning them into ground meat, it's considered politically incorrect. It's the same reason that the Pegasus class was ended. Having a extremely fast ship with missiles that you weren't allowed to shoot at smugglers just made it an expensive showboat, not an effective deterrent.

I think they prefer non-lethal means so that innocents don't get caught in the crossfire and it's more of a nuisance as they aren't actively executing civilians. Then it's a whole different ball game. Think of how you would react to house flies versus termites or bedbugs who pose a real hazard. Also, one of my favorite stories was Somali Pirates mistaking a Spanish warship for a cargo shipm

I don't know the answers to your questions but my thoughts are that the ammunition for the weapons onboard the Navy ships is expensive and overkill for something as small as a little boat. As for the pirates, I can only think they are either after the ransom money or they're dreaming of having their own big ship. They could be thinking of selling that ship to some other country. Who knows? It's hard to imagine they could believe they have a chance of capturing one, but they must think they do.

It's about the money. It's cheaper to deter them or arrest them if they get to froggy. If the navy sink the pirate's boats, then they are obligated to go after them and give aid to the wounded and lend assistance to those in the water, or left on the sinking boats, all of which also puts sailors at risk. Plus nobody likes to kill someone if they don't have to.

@L3WG Reacts The reason they are trying to take a navy vessel that is armed like this, if they can pull it off, it instantly makes them a bigger threat and a unifying force where other pirates would want to work under the cover of the bigger guns etc. Easy enough military tactic throughout history.

Go watch the movie "Captain Phillips". Personally, I think lethal defense should be done in this case. There are some things and people that you don't play footsie with - pirates are one of those types of people. People do stupid things like attacking something or someone bigger than they are for 3 reasons: 1) they are so angry they don't give a poop house mouse, 2) they are just plain stupid, 3)if they are successful they can brag themselves up...at least until the next time and they get their butts handed to them on a platter. NATO is a group of nations that have joined together to stand in defense of one another if one of the members is attacked by a non-member country. For example, if Ukraine had been a member of NATO and Russia attacked them, then all other NATO members would have been able to immediately step up and fight WITH Ukraine to defend against said invasion. The European Maritime Force (navy) consists of a group of countries (Spain, Italy, France, and Portugal) that are ready to defend upon the sea - The force was formed in 1995 to fulfill missions defined in the Petersberg Declaration, such as sea control, humanitarian missions, peacekeeping operations, crisis response operations, and peace enforcement. I got this EMF information from Wikipedia.
@archaeologyfornon-archaeol1014
@archaeologyfornon-archaeol1014 5 месяцев назад
The pirates have no education, do not know much about other countries, or even what that means, exactly. It is unlikely they know the difference between a military ship,and a cargo ship. They know only rifles and are unaware the big things on the ships are guns. Although NOW they may have spread that info! They also attacked a French naval ship, also unsuccessfully. As to non lethal, I am for it where possible. They are often desperate people who are forced to go along or family members will be harmed.

They probably don't use lethal force because it's unnecessary. If they can defeat them with a water cannon why ask our guys to have to deal with the mental aftermath of taking a life. Most American soldiers are not really bloodthirsty like people think they are. They do what they have to do & do it well. Taking a life is hard on most people and taking one unnecessarily is probably 10 times worse. It seems like the response is "proportional". It's not a war where the enemy is in a ship that could potentially sink them and will do so if they don't take them out first. Those navy ships are probably in no danger from 6 dudes on a dingy.

As a minor historical note, the US Navy/Marine Corps fought Muslim pirates for a couple of decades in the Mediterranean sea in order to dissuade them from kidnapping American citizens and holding them for ransom. The Marine nickname "leatherneck" came from the large thick collars they wore to prevent the pirates from beheading them with their swords. Some things never change.
@darkamora5123
@darkamora5123 8 месяцев назад
To be specific the charter for the creation of the US Navy, says that the sole purpose for its creation was to combat, "Barbary corsairs" (state sponsored pirates) with the Barbary nations being Morocco, Tripoli, Tunis and Algiers. Morocco signed a peace treaty immediately, but we conducted two separate expeditions to "yank their fangs" of the other three. During the first expedition a small contingent of Marines (8 if memory serves) allied with 500 locals opposed to the current Pasha and a group of Greek mercenaries took a fort against impossible odds. Their fierceness got the leader of the local insurgents to gift the Marine Commander of the force with his own sword,( The Mamaluke sword Marine officers have as part of their dress uniform to this day) and earned the Marines the nickname leatherneck because of the high leather collars they wore to protect their necks from sword slashes. The whole thing was immortalized by the line "To the shores of Tripoli" in the Marine Corps Hymn.

Ppl dont realize that the whole world has long since seen Somalia as a political & diplomatic sh*tstorm best left to sort itself, if it's ever going to which frankly seems unlikely. Yes, there are good ppl there same as anywhere else but the level of corruption and warlording makes it a bit like the Wild West. Many of the pirates were taught guerrilla style warfare as young as walking age. There's not much room for any nation to wiggle around their waters and the pirates are well known for being maverick wild cards but you have to also understand death likely awaits them ashore every bit as much as at sea...so they come with a rather devil may care set of brass ones whether lacking intelligence or not and though seemingly crazy some of their plans have actually on occasion been quite clever. Most are simply trying to buy off the warlords with acts of piracy (as a show of loyalty or allegiance) for protection & feeding of their families. Young Somali men are often seen as easily expendable and their fate expected. Bc the waters near Somalia are on heavily traded shipping lanes there's no end to opportunity for seizing ships of all kinds. Whether cargo or naval frigates. There's a huge black market for both goods & weaponry. You look at the g*ns they carry & they are from every nation and I guarantee not gotten thru legal means. So...when one has little to nothing to lose...a naval ship or a cargo or etc makes no difference as long as they can capture it and they are successful enough to be taken seriously. The basic rules of engagement recognized by most nations to keep things peaceful states one must not engage an enemy with lethal force being the absolute last resort. So, the naval/maritime community as a whole aims not to kill. Partly to keep the actual peace and partly to keep up appearances of being the more dignified of the combatants whilst still keeping the commerce going via operational shipping lanes. This was explained to me by a Somali friend who came here (US) as a refugee with his mother & sister. His dad died a pirate. He told me had they not came here they would have all died of starvation or been m*rdered by one of the warring factions. He's a college graduate now and going for his M.D. He wouldve NEVER had that chance there. He had to go through he'll to get this lucky...so many can't get out or even hope to dream of not just surviving but thriving. My town has a small pocket of Somali refugees and they are wonderful warm ppl but none would go back home if they had a choice. Too much trauma for too many years. You hear their different stories and feel the passion & sadness within them it's easy to understand that despite our (US) many problems...it is nothing compared to what they've known. Not one of those in the pocket I know have not flourished since they arrived. Many friend's mother recently got her official citizenship and there is no happier new American I"ve known. She knows what it means to be here far better than most of us natural born. Her smile was bright as the sun that day and I & her family were over the moon for her. She will always be Somali but she's also very proud to be one of us now. When you see what America means to someone else in that way... There's no better attutude adjustment. We should be grateful every day for simply happening to be born where we have bc so many have not. We are the lucky ones whether any rhyme or reason to it.

The reason that I see them using Non-Leathal force is because of the overwhelming difference between the two forces. If we (The USA) had used full force in response, then we would get a really bad reputation for going way too far. Think of it this way. The Pirates are a 2 year old child attacking a 40 year old grown up. Should the Grown up fight back with their full force in response to the Childs attack? There's also the point of life. The other reason for Non-Leathal force is to try to preserve the Life of the attackers because no one should die a Needless death. No matter how unintelligent they are. That being said my personal feeling are that if your that stupid to try and go up against such a power difference when you should know that there is no possible way for you to win then your basically just committing Suicide.

Even if it had no original written version.) referred to the act? It's not like the languages are ancient Egyptian before we found The Rosetta Stone. While I only know the Lakȟóta words, there are multiple Nations with members that speak their own language. While this wasn't a tradition for ALL of them, those that had the tradition and still have living members can likely tell you the term (or at least a transliteration) in their language. While some Nations have no surviving members, and thus have no way for us to know THEIR term, treating every one of us like an undifferentiated mass of people is just weird. Like saying we don't know the European word for anything. As there is no generic "European" language. Likewise there is no such thing as a First Nation language. Even less so as there is no First Nation and there IS a Europe. I find it ironic that you are so careful to use the term First People but then go what feels condescending by saying "no one knows what they called it" when we can speak for ourselves and tell you. Considering it was only really a tradition amongst the Plains Indians there really aren't that many languages to find the term for the practice. The languages are so alive that the Ojibwe Tribal Council(in league with the University of Manitoba) have translated and created an Ojibwe dubbed version of Star Wars Episode IV. Also, while the term Indian is a misnomer on the part of Europeans, terms like Native American, Indigenous People, or People of the First Nation are no less misnomer as they are just English descriptions of nations that have their own names in their own languages. With groups in the US like AIM (a Native activist group that has chosen to call itself the American Indian Movement, and keeps that name to this day) you can tell that the term Indian doesn't carry the same pejorative and racist connotations for us, that "eskimo" (blubber eater) does for the Inuit. In other words, only Europeans get worked up by the term Indian. For those of us with the ancestry it is no more offensive than any of the other made up English words for us. Really of them all, Sioux is the only one that was ever offensive as it was an insult from other, surrounding, Nations for how they perceived our behavior (specifically the Ojibwe, remember them? The full term in their language, Nadowessioux, meant "little snakes". They considered us untrustworthy hence the pejorative). Use what makes you comfortable, but as long as you don't call us "Injuns" or "Red skinned savages" you won't offend.

The EU has its own defensive force outside of NATO. NATO just adds the US and Canada. To answer your other question the US military isn't full aggro all of the time. So we usually try to dissuade people from acts of violence. That's where you get the non-lethal approach unless fired up on. It's basically about our world image. We don't want the world thinking that we just bully everyone. That's why we give countries warnings instead of just bulldozing them. A lot of countries are sensitive about our presence so we do try to play nice to keep up relations and continue playing world police.

When we fought Germany, we weren't targeting the small businesses and/or families that were making schnitzel. And the same with Japan. @@JohnWarner-lu8rq There are a number of reasons we want to use force as a last resort against pirates, and the reasons often depend on the nature of each particular scenario, but here are some of the more important ones. First, using guns indiscriminately in waters near other nations can lead to diplomatic issues. Governments in the region might not be keen on having the world's strongest military right off their coast firing their guns willy nilly, even if it is ostensibly fighting piracy. The US wants to avoid making enemies, looking like an aggressor, and potentially destabilizing the regional power balance. The US has global strategic interests that require it to remain on friendly terms with the international community. Second, the US needs to allocate its resources efficiently. Cost generally scales with lethality. Third, when hostages are involved, the safety of the hostages must be prioritized. Fourth, before the engagement occurs, the enemy's intent to use deadly force might not be so clear. Often, they disguise themselves and use fake distress calls.
@JohnWarner-lu8rq
@JohnWarner-lu8rq 7 месяцев назад
@@godowskygodowsky1155 "waters near other nations" means nothing, as long as they're in international waters. As for governments in the region, the situations usually occur miles and miles from shore, so they wouldn't be aware of what might be happening. Basically, it fits the old saying "cop didn't see it, I didn't do it." Resources? A missile or two, of a few hundred bullets isn't going to put us in any kind of shortage. I agree with you on the hostages scenario. If someone is trying to illegally board your boat, with weapons, and is shooting at you, you know they're not friends. F*ck the U.N. They're no friend of America. 1- You sink the enemies boats. 2- Drive away. 3- Survivors, if any, you leave them to play with the sharks.

I personally think 🤔, if the US attacked without asking for help, they would be seen as bullies. I have seen reactors who blame the US for reacting to being shot upon during the 8hr fight, and these same people dont respond to the enemy spraying the sea with mines nor firing upon civilians who has nothing to do with their war.
@Starkogi

Unfortunately the USA always has to fight with Two hands and a foot tied behind their back. Everyone sees them as an undisputed power, yet when someone calls for open conflict with USA, the USA has to respond in the most slap on the wrist way, or else it’s “disproportionate”. Like when Iran just dumped a bunch of naval mines in the most traveled trade corridor in the world, crippled a US ship, and then cried foul as the USA vaporized half their navy. For some reason the Provokation of the US is never considered, just the response, which is why we can’t just delete countries anymore. Gotta get everyone a combat therapist and reparations for emotional damage before there’s any conflict to begin with 🙄 Pirates gonna start demanding US healthcare for emotional trauma by 2050, bet.

😅 Lewis: on the use of non lethal force. 1) The United States is under constant watch by the international community first off. This alone kind of "hamstrings" or limits our responses in given situations especially in international waters, near foreign coastlines etc. Due to diplomacy and concern for affecting foreign relations we have to be very careful to avoid the use of lethal force unless absolutely necessary. A large percent of the global community would be outraged that "big mean America" pulled out the big guns on a "poor lowly group of pirates." Many would claim we went overboard and unnecessarily used lethal force and use that as propaganda to leverage nations and people groups against America. Many times our leadership doesn't want to risk the damage to America's potential to create and maintain lasting ties and relationships with other foreign nations. It's ridiculous really, but many would say we can afford to lose the ship because we "are so rich and powerful," and therefore....lethal means were unnecessary and inhumane. Yeah insane right? But history has shown this is often the case. 2) In this instance the ship they hijacked wasn't a navy ship it was an American vessel, but technically privately owned. The only way to use lethal means at that stage is to fire upon the ship they commandeered, or attempt a hostile takeover of the ship itself. In either case there is great risk to kill the Americans on board as well and/or cause significant damage to the ship and it's interior equipment....both things the company would then be outraged at the Navy "for having caused." The situation is convoluted and complicated....it's not just as simple as taking it back or.blowing it up. This is why in many cases there is then a negotiation or series of negotiations for the return of the ship and safety of its occupants. It's the most peaceable and least damaging way to reach an end result. 3) Were they to attempt to take over an ACTUAL naval vessel they'd face several different obstacles. First off, theyd have to contend with a series of state of the art weapons that there is no possible way they could overcome. Second, theyd face a crew of armed and highly trained military that WOULD NOT allow them to succeed. Third, if they did manage to succeed....well we all know what happens when idiots try attacking the United States military directly lol. It's likely the United States would then launch a campaign to annihilate virtually every Somali pirate in global existence lol. The pirates were smart to target an American ship not direct under the military umbrella because it causes the complications not experienced when attacking a normal.vessel from the USA.

The difference between the European Union Naval Force and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is that EUNAVFOR is the naval force of the European Union, while NATO is comprised of 29 European countries and the U.S. and Canada. While there is a lot of overlap, some European countries are part of the EU and not part of NATO, and vice versa. I don't know if it's true or not, but I heard from somewhere that after the incident with the Maersk Alabama, supposedly Somalia tried to take the U.S. to international court claiming that killing those three pirates was murder.

They use non-lethal weapons partly because we can take care of them without shooting them, then non-lethal goes too far because the US cannot win. We're criticized if we shoot on the poor unfortunate pirates and we're criticized for not being harsh enough on the pirates which would make them think again when they look at attacking any other boat.
