I totally agree. And if you hear Lucy screaming you know what it is all about a mothers fury... This is not about WWII, no... it is about every single f*cking war. Let the warmongers aka politicians go to their wars and fight themselves. When I listened to this song for the first time, I did not get goosebumps, no.. Just for context: This video was a 2020 re-recording featuring some other German singers. Reinhard Mey only appears for the last verse. Originally the song was recorded by him in 1986 and it is indeed about war, or more precisely about conscientious objection against the draft into the conscript army, that the Bundeswehr (German military) was back then, and about fleeing from war, to save your family.
@to.l.2469
@to.l.2469 Месяц назад
1.143 / 5.000 In 1986, it was about conscription, not war. And that, with all due respect, was completely beside the point. However, it now fits an autocratic regime that is waging a cynical war of aggression! But then, the language being sung is not the right one, and there is no distinction between it and defense! It is a very left-wing and unrealistic viewpoint, which fits more in with one of the church's worldviews (the church is the one that has always adapted to the situation of the respective country and in this country has encouraged child abuse...) To now create a context for wars that is not clearly identified is difficult to bear. It was already presumptuous in 1986! Even if it is difficult: at 18, you are an adult and can make your own decisions! It would be a little less self-aggrandizing if the "sons" (who in my opinion are also completely out of date, what about the daughters?) were at least allowed to sing for themselves! PS: The "authorities" didn't exist in 1986 any more than they do today! We are a democracy. A reference to Germany is therefore completely out of the question!
@j.m.w.5064
@j.m.w.5064 Месяц назад
@@to.l.2469Well, luckily you are not at all "completely beside the point", "self-aggrandising" or "hard to bear". And if in 1986 you wanted to refuse service in the army, there was surely no "system" giving you a hard time, because "democracy". Jeeeeez 🙄

@to.l.2469
@to.l.2469 27 дней назад
@@j.m.w.5064 I had already suspected that there would be no more comments from you. PS: The song is definitely *not* about refusing military service or the difficulties involved! It is about parents implicitly assuming that their children would be "sacrificed" in a war (that isn't even happening)! PS2: Democracy must be defended, with armed force if necessary! Anyone who is not prepared to do this ultimately doesn't care how they are governed, which inevitably leads to conformist conformism. Germany already had that in 1933-45!

It's relieving and encouraging there are still people with this mindset. My thoughts on this were largely rejected, which is ok. I don't think I have the final answer. But to this day I cannot understand why all those who clearly support war - regardless of the reason - do not view it with the same skepticism. The reasons that have always been given are nothing more than hopes about how a conflict will end. And so far, time has not proven them right. I fear that in the end they will turn away and simply ignore everything that happened at the end and what (did not) remain.

I listened to this Song only once before and again immediatly tears started to fall. What times do we live in. As a German: I grew up with children's songs about how we are all little Europeans who walk towards each other and now half of my friends and collegues have a plan where to escape to just in case. My elders still talk about the familiy members who died in WW2, the trauma and guilt is still so alive. And they talk about war so easily again when my sweet 89 y.o. grandpa still cries over his older brother they sent to the front lines during the last days of war when he was only 17 and scared and already 1.88 tall. "Of course they sent him all to the front girl, there were only boys and old men left. He was so kind to me, girl, and I still remember his smile and how he was always so hungry and still he gave me the bigger portion each time." I would do anything to protect my boys from experiencing war.

I'm one who suggested this song. As I said when I did that: This is about "national service" something that seems to have been a topic in Britain's election campaign recently ... Reinhard Mey is the one who sings the last verse. He's the grandmaster of 60s to 90s singer songwriters in Germany. Well, one of a group of three. They even had a gig together as older men: Reinhard Mey, Hannes Wader and Constantin Wecker. There's a good YT Video of those three together.

The situation is particularly special in Germany. For decades, Germans were told that they had attacked their neighbors as aggressors (which was true at least for the Second World War) and it was very difficult in Germany to set up an army again. That alone sparked heated debates in the German parliament in the 1950s. As a result, there was always a very strong pacifist movement in Germany that completely rejected soldiers and the army. In Germany, the experience that one must fight for one's freedom if necessary is no longer present, as it was in England, France or the USA. Although Germany has also experienced such times, e.g. against Napoleon in the so-called "wars of liberation". But unlike the "American War of Independence", for example, the "wars of liberation" are no longer an issue in Germany and are neither discussed in schools nor in the media, and certainly not heroically. As a result, Germany still has a very hard time with anything to do with the military, or even with patriotism.

Reinhard Mey hat ein riesen Repertoire. Meine Favoriten sind "du bist ein Riese, Max", "ich wollte wie Orpheus singen", "gegen den Wind"

The last one, Reinhard Mey, is the original composer and author. Sad fact: he lost one of his sons around 10 years ago and this might be double hard for him, as he did not lose his son to the army, but to a disease. and you can see that a part of him is broken for this matter

It`s a rather "old" song which never was more actual than now

The original of this song, of course by Reinhard Mey, was published in the mid-80s. Slightly different tone... simpler, more aligned with his "singer/songwriter" style... same massive emotional impact. I prefer the 80s version... but regardless... it is a song that hits all over.
