Brexit also made this worse. Farmers got huge subsidies from the EU, and it was cheap and easy to import whatever we can't produce locally (either due to climate, or the scale we need it). The decline of road quality was the very first thing I noticed after the Tories got in in 2010, especially on motorways. They're still terrible. There are parts of the M62 and M60 I use every day that have potholes in and terrible drainage that floods part of the carriageway whenever it rains... which being in Manchester, is ALL THE GODDAMN TIME! Also, we have Maggie to thank for the state of our phone infrastructure. In the 80's BT were going to replace ALL copper lines with fibre across the whole of the UK, all in one go. They built factories to make the spools of cable, the exchange equipment to handle it all, trained engineers, so on and so forth. Then Maggie said nope, can't do that. It isn't fair that a state organisation can so "unfairly" compete against private companies so they split it up and sold it off. Guess who bought all of the cable and equipment after this, thinking it was actually a good idea? South Korea. Who now have the best internet and telecoms infrastructure in the world. They spent decades and billions building it all out and their economy and quality of life for the average person on the street improved ten fold. Thanks Maggie.

I mean, to be fair Lithuania is on the path of falling apart as well, outside the big two cities. Even there things are at best 'going OK' I guess...Things do look pretty decent on paper, because turns out a country with a first world level of education that is pretty poor while also having overall pretty widespread english speaking skills in its youth is a prime place for other countries to set up local offices in, while local companies are kinda struggling, as soon as a country where its cheaper to move those offices to shows up, then our economy is gonna take a nose dive

It's only recently that places like Warsaw are civilising themselves from urban chaos and we still get new developments that are horribly poorly planned and will cause of large extra costs for people over future decades. You can't just let people build whatever they want, because it'll lead disgusting eye-sores, no appropriate services and poor infrastructure. yeah, thats the issue: - too many regulations -> it is stifling, nothing gets completed, nothing even begins - too few regulations -> everything is consumedf by chaos. And legal disputes become nightmares, everything becomes non-standard, etc. So, completly deregulation is a very bad idea. But reworking the existent ones? That is sorely needed. Then again, who would do that? Which politician will sit down, read through legalisation, do some rework and put it up for vote? None. 1) It is way too difficult. The Regulations have grown like cancer, one exception added, another rule expanded, another exception to cover for the expansion. Instead of reworking it, it always got added to, because it is easier. A new problems arises? Just add another paragraph! 2) There is simply no merit in it. If you are a politician, and you gruel yourself through that stuff - you don't get rewarded. A restructuring will first incurr a huge backlash before improvements can be felt. Everything has to be conformed, laws updated, etc. 3) Politicians are simply not trained for it. Too often, there are some people who think x is a good idea, without ever thinking about what it could lead to. It sounds good, so it must be good, right? Sometimes I seriously think that it is hopeless. That the easiest thing to do, would be to demolish the country and rewrite the constitution. Because any less, and it will be opposed by entrenched and powerful factions.

UK politicians have been pushing austerity measures on their people and cutting/under funding social programs and the NHS for years. Austerity only works for the few wealthy at the top and not the citizenry. "Austerity exposed a political faultline in health policy. It’s not the most well-remembered of the NHS’s founding principles, but Nye Bevan was very clear that his health service would be about ‘universalising the best’. He intended that NHS provision be so good, it would eliminate any need to supplement entitlements with insurance, or payments to skip waiting lists. It wasn’t conceived as a safety net, but as a way of collectively ensuring the best possible healthcare for everyone in our society. As with other parts of welfare policy, the impact of austerity has been to transform the NHS into a safety net. In the last ten years, the government has enacted an NHS-wide search for anything that could be badged ‘spare capacity’ or ‘waste’. These services were then cut in the name of ‘efficiency’. The political justification was a leaner public service - ‘world class care, for less’. The reality is that the cuts have gone straight through the bone... A sustained campaign against health workers meant the UK had one of the most stretched workforces in the OECD. The public sector pay freeze, an assault on junior doctor conditions, and reforms to NHS pensions had created a crisis of both recruitment and retention. As of 2019, we were tens of thousands of doctors and nurses short, compared to the kind of staffing levels seen in comparable countries. And austerity-driven cost-saving exercises and bureaucracy had stifled innovation. The Conservatives often presents themselves as the party of innovation and science, but at the turn of the decade, the UK was well behind international standards on implementation of lifesaving technology, medicines, and digital tools. This is pure short-sightedness - it might save a small initial investment, but the long-term costs are felt in less efficient care pathways and the economic cost of a sicker population."

As an Austrian, I have to disagree with your take on smoking in restaurants. While we had this "restaurants can choose" law, it was practically impossible to find a non smoking restaurant (we finally banned indoor smoking in restaurants a couple years ago). The reason was this: every restaurant thought that their customers would go to a competitor of they made their restaurant a non-smoking restaurant. Because most groups always contain at least one smoker, so usually, all the non-smokers didn't want to make the smoker feel bad. Some restaurants built divisions and had a smoking and a non smoking section, but always, always the smoke would leak over to the non-smokers. Because guess what: waiters move around quickly and move the air around with them and of course most of the time there wasn't even a door between those two sections. Result: 95% of restaurants were full of smoke, in all their sections. Anyone who had kids, had asthma, irriable eyes, or simply didn't want to inhale smoke or go home in stinky clothes and in need of an immediate, extended hair wash ENVIED all the other European countries who did better at regulating smoking. Because Austria was actually one of the worst European countries for smoking laws. Everyone else had stricter laws than us. It got so bad, that we got lots and lots of complaints from tourists who were not used to smoke anymore - AND we're a country that depends A LOT on the tourism industry! Which somehow STILL wouldn't convince restaurants, idk why. The situation was just stuck in some sort of tragedy of the commons problem. Where 80% or the population wanted non-smoking restaurants but only about 5% of restaurants actually were non-smoking and those were super hard to find. Restaurants wouldn't advertise this on their homepage and would even actually lie to you if you called them up and inquired. Like "yes, yes, our non-smoking section is totally separate, no smoke is leaking over" and then you arrived there with guests who couldn't or didn't want to go to a smoking establishment and ended up with "oh, sorry, we don't serve the non-smoking section today, only the default = smoking section, because there's not enough guests to warrant opening that run-down back room that we made into the non-smoking section". The entrance and main part of the restaurant was ALWAYS the smoking section. Even if the non-smoking section was actually being served, you had to pass through the front room and bar area that was thick with smoke like nobody can believe and if you wanted to go to the bathroom it was the same. We were all sooo glad when finally that law was changed and there's no indoor smoking anymore. Outdoors only nowadays. And even there, restaurant owners haven't learned. Eg. here in Vienna, 99% of the time the wind comes from the west. You'd imagine anybody with half a brain would organize the smoking and non-smoking outside areas so the non-smokers wouldn't have to sit downwind of the smokers, would you? Naaaah. It's like they do it on purpose to exact revenge for having spent a money on those useless indoor partitions (usually a bit of drywall and a door that was permanently kept open) which then got obsolete when the law changed. Honestly, picking the country with the worst restaurant smoking law as some sort of shining beacon of freedom, yeah, nah, sorry, you're wrong. Our experience here with this was NOT good. Going to restaurants now is MUCH nicer. Yes, I get the whole slippery slope argument but I guess you could draw the line where people are directly affected vs. indirectly. Smoke directly affects other people, so it's ok to ban it in a restaurant. Just like you'd be banned from shitting in the middle of the restaurant and not just on your own table but you smear it over everyone else's table as well. Being obese or smoking at home only indirectly affects other people via public health care costs. This should be managed via monetary incentives. That tax on sugary stuff and highly processed stuff isn't stupid. Because that stuff was often cheaper than normal food. Yes, you should still be able to eat sugary and highly processed stuff, but it shouldn't be the cheapest option. Because then people eat only or mostly that every day. And then you have people being really sick already in their 50s when other countries have people mostly healthy in their 70s. Banning large quantities or stuff or meal deals just because you can buy more is silly. Just make it more expensive if it's crap and give financial incentives to less crappy versions. There's nothing wrong with making a meal deal out of a tuna or chicken sandwich plus an apple and a yogurt. If you want something fried plus chips plus crisps instead, fine, just make it slightly more expensive, done. If you want to have public health care, having crappy food as the default option really doesn't work. There's a really interesting video by Kraut about this. I'm old enough to have been around when people cooked a lot more from scratch and ultra processed stuff wasn't consumed all that often and was more a treat you'd have maybe once a week. We were totally happy back then (70s and 80s) and A LOT more healthy. It's not a bad idea to try and nudge people back to a behavior more like this via an extra tax on crappy stuff. Outright banning it? Nah. But a financial nudge? No problem.
@jgomo3877
@jgomo3877 6 дней назад
The issue with thinking this way is the ever expanding number of taxes, and increasing tax rates. Most Western European countries have effective tax rates of 60-70% (looking at tax receipts against GDP, and/or average amounts of gross income spent on tax); that is already very high, and becoming ever higher, and yet public services become worse and national debts rise. What happens to when the behaviors are changed and people stop the behavior the government is looking to discourage? Tax revenue falls, however governement only ever spends more, so new taxes must be levied. Increasing taxes to nudge behavior sounds just fine, until the government decides it can mould the public into any behaviour it wants via taxes; and then it takes a sinister turn.

The very short, massively cut back leg of HS2 they're actually building, is the first piece of large scale NEW rail infrastructure built in the UK outside of London since Victorian times. Everything else has been an upgrade of existing lines, but this is the first new one we'll be getting for more than 123 years. If our Victorian ancestors had the same "oh it costs too much" and "it'll spoil my view" mentality, we wouldn't have a country, given so much of what we have right now was built then. Queen Victoria reigned from 1837 to 1901 for context of how much we've stagnated. Two world wars obviously didn't help, but even still.

December of first year, after house hunting non stop since freshers week, I couldn't afford a piss-stained, mould-infested cupboard with a maintenance loan and working 25+ hours a week. Was forced to drop out and move back home, and it's not just me. A lot of my school mates all went to uni together, and every single one of them - barring 2 (from high income families who could afford to subsidise them) - have dropped out one by one. Politicians suck anywhere you look. Ya got optimists on one side who think everything will be alright if they just go this way, and you got pessimists on the other side who think everything will go wrong if they don't stay in the way they've been going. Both sides end up ruining culture, economy, government, and military when they need to forget ideology and start looking at things pragmatically, realistically, and with a sense of moralism. Sure, having a welfare state is very, very difficult and doesn't work for most countries, but going in the opposite direction, maximizing efficiency and keeping costs as low as possible is just going to lead to greed and indifference. The people of the western world expect services that we simply cannot afford, at least not now. At the same time, the Government which says they'll help proceeds to not help in any way. We're entitled, and can't accept that the world simply doesn't conform to us. And we expect the Government to somehow get better my voting in the same people (On both sides), over and over again. We need economists, administrators, and decent, good, people to get elected in local communities, 'county' communities, 'states', and of course congress/parliament, and prime minister/president.

That episode was such a train wreck, but the basic idea of cutting taxes, which were and remain at historic highs, to spawn a boom could have at least worked short term (albeit ending in a bigger bust longer term, unless we actually taxed away the resultant land price gains). More than the substance and strategy the major failing was in the slapdash panicked implementation. 1 Kwateng's mini budget was sprung out of nowhere with no consultation, even with the cabinet 2 Even more crucially The B of E were not consulted, when the £ tanked they had to step in and the £ recovered all of it's losses BUT Bailey, no doubt royally pissed off, put a 2 week time limit on support so in the end the government had to fold. Ironically Truss had already talked about taking control of the B of E before, yet decided to try and put the cart before the horse, either in the hope the horse would just capitulate or under the presumption FX/currency markets wouldn't have reacted so strongly. Bailey kept his job, Truss lost to a lettuce. So we got sent back to RIchi's' safe pair of hands' and left Starmer's timid visionless leadership with even more excuses to not try anything that might possibly rattle markets.

Thing is this is what the British public wanted and voted for. You can claim they’re being misled and lied to all you want. Maybe they are! But even when that’s explained to them , as it has been over and over, they still want and vote for this. So lie in your bed.

By the time he retired, he was battling racist boomers to get half a dozen dismal, cramped, unaffordable houses at a time. He felt so demoralized, having in his youth truly believed he was helping people live better lives. I moved to Australia from th UK 10 years ago and I can say with certainty a few things 1. The UK is borderline a 3rd world country. People accept the norm in the UK for what it is, but its not normal, its poverty. 2. There is Rubbish everywhere, the sign of dying nation. They can even find the money to maintain thier roads and rubbish collection 3. Houses are rediculously expensive in relation to wages, owneing a house is pipe dream for many. Or at least you wont be albe to do it until you are 40 + 3. The media in the UK is the UK's largest threat to democracy. - I have seen with my own eyes , family members fall for the BBC propaganda around elections and wars, misinforming the population so much they are effecitvly neutralised from voting for what will benefit them. 4. The UK will never get any better. Our golden era was 1850 - 1960's. The UK has minimal natural resources and no manufacturing anymore. This is because the policiticans sold out the people of the UK and sent all these jobs to China with promise of higher profits due to lower wage demands. Unfortunatlry the UK i knew and loved is gone, and it will never return. I just try now to position my kids in a better country and position for the future. All western countries are on the decline. I belive Asia is the next place to experience a wealth boom.

We lived communism. And hearing about it is not like living it. There are very stark differences in general politics between western and eastern Europe, and this is one of the primary reasons why. We (eastern europeans) are either from a country that still lives within the shadow of that leviathan, with political leaders the same as old soviet puppet leaders, or from a country who successfully escaped, and is now warning as many others as it can. Western europeans simply never lived it, and so to us it can look crazy how they keep actively voting for their own decline.

Councils should have the legal power to compulsory purchase or even just outright claim properties that have been empty for x time, or have no obvious owner (lots of people die and don't leave their property to anybody for example). This would bring a lot of empty stock back into local authority control which can then be given out to those who need it, which in turn generates revenue from rent for the council. But that makes sense, so it won't happen.
@CFRTrainSpotter

@@TalesOfWar this reminds me in my city (Bucharest) theres a lot of dilapidated pre-WW2 buildings, some of them vacant, and a few that are literally just structural skeletons and thats it, and yet due to ownership laws (especially after communism) the city cant take them over and refurbish them because they're private property. which is especially problematic in the case of buildings that have historical value. not to mention that real estate sharks demolish them to build boring glass towers as office buildings if they get their hands on them. most of these buildings could address housing issues in many cases, but it seems theres no interest to do so, and if there is, there are legal problems on the way. so thats the flip side of the laxed urban planning laws... secondly, it seems ridiculous that a part of a city (one of the biggest in Europe in fact) is buying property in a town so far away. why? do people commpute from Hartlepool to London and im not aware of it? i've always found doing stuff like that irritating.

I'm Hungarian, I used to live in the UK between 2014 and 2019. I have worked in IT, had a salary of 40K my wife made 35K. We have decided to move back to Hungary after Brexit because the atmosphere became too toxic + it is easier to raise kids and buy a home here than in London. Now in 2024 we have our own newly built 3 bedroom semi-detached house, mortgage is around 380 GBP per month. (We own two paid off cars 5+10 y.o.). Both our kids are now in private education and will be able to go to university for free. Everybody I know from all around Europe (Poles, Romanians, Hungarians, Bulgarians, Slovaks) have left the UK and moved back home with kids. I'm so sad it has came to this, we loved the UK and wanted to live there forever, not because of the money but because of how good the country is and how nice the people are. It breaks my heart to see how the British society is erroding.
