With Brexit still rumbling on, yesterday the government's new Immigration Bill received royal assent - formally cementing it in law. This means that free movement between the UK and EU is essentially over, fundamentally changing how the two sides interact. So in this video we explain what's happened, the bill and what the changes really achieve.

I keep a boat in a Spanish Marina, many of my British neighbours voted for Brexit. They are now blaming the EU because they are going to be restricted to when and how often they can visit. Many of these are retires used to spend the whole summer in the Mediterranean, its all finished, but they still think Spain needs them and will ignore Schengen rules or give each Brit an extended access visa. It’s unreal, why do people still believe in any benefits that Brexit can bring.

Just got a letter saying that I can't have my boat registered in the EU, without a VAT certificate it is almost impossible to register in the UK, so I risk losing my boat having to sell it at a loss.

So Spain loses a tonne of income through lost earnings through pension money earned in the UK and spent in Spain. I'm sure they are feeling smug about that with their roaring economy. I'm not from the UK (hello from the chaos that is the U.S. right now), but that's a good point. Is that points-based system supposed to be in effect by 2021 with the new year? Or until they get it worked out, the regular travel between the countries is halted and stuck in limbo until things are worked out, even beyond the start of 2021? Or do people just go on like normal until it's resolved? Maybe that was explained in the video and I misssd it...

As an EU migrant I have contributed to over 270 construction projects in 10 years as a Surveying Civil Engineer. Before I have established my self employed business I was working as a leaflet distributor ( £4/100 leaflets) in Croydon and shop assistant (£5/hour) and in the same shop chain later as a shop manager running a store at Oxford Circus (£6.70/hour). Now I can charge £25/h for my skills and expertise in my own field of profession. The way to get here was challenging in the more and more emotional environment working with lads who read The Sun or Daily Mail newspaper on a daily basis but when I presented my work to them they went silent. I work to tight tolerances 2mm is too much for me anyone who I worked for gave a very good review on my work. I always make sure my client is satisfied and if something has ran out from the fridge in the site office to make their morning tea I buy it on my account. A small thing but the end of the day small things also matter. I also honour the will of the people as a true democrat does but makes me sad how easily the public has been pulled using populist rhetoric. Anyone who had the understanding what Brexit meant had a vision showing a very dark and lonely future ahead. Just a "fun fact" the projects I was working on in the past 10 years over 62% of their budget has been financed using one of the EU's development schemes so after Brexit I will see much less construction projects running because they obviously have to find another source of funding for large scale transport or underground services development. So many English people have very little knowledge about how many benefits they have enjoyed while they were an EU member state. Before you ask, I was invited by one of the largest construction developer company in 2007 to come and work here and I came in the hope I will be still welcomed in 2020. I was obviously wrong. Since 2011 I have now a small family here with one child and we both working very hard to keep things afloat. Mrs is an Art Therapist helping young people with learning difficulties and she is also a Support worker and Teaching Assistant for severe disabilities. In my work I have met not a single EU migrant who just set and did nothing. Usually they were on the hardest jobs working 10 hours laying asphalt or bricks or mixing and pouring concrete. Living in small compounds sometimes together to keep the cost low coming in early don't talk back keeping their heads down. I have met really good skilled British people on site too as well as several smaller or larger Pakistani and Indian groups and felt envy how well they cooperate and work as a family does even sharing their meal at lunch time. Sorry I was so long but I wanted to share my insight as an EU migrant with two higher degrees.

There is no version of reality where stopping frictionless, cheap trade with a neighbouring trade bloc that is one of the largest in the world would be beneficial British economy. The UK government and economists generally- including the money markets - believe that leaving the EEA and Single Market will significantly reduce the economy of the UK by approximately 8-10%. Please explain how this fits with your assertion about FOM. As for the race side, FOM is about creating a market for labour that parallels the market for goods, it’s absurd to call it racist. My thoughts: Aging middle class Tories have had a panic attack because GB is undergoing the final adjustments of stepping down from global empire (Indian, African and Asian wealth is staying put rather than sloshing around the City.) Moreover, the junior partners of Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland want more power for themselves, sparking an reawakening of English identity and grievance. The Tories sold the English a transparently false bill of goods based on fear and nostalgia. Now, instead of letting the English reconsider, your government is relentlessly demolishing the relationship that heretofore kept you relevant and prosperous. What I don't get: How can ordinary people, including Brexiteers, not see the looming hardship ahead and the gross incompetence of Tory leadership? Now, apply this formula to the USA almost exactly. What many people seem to willfully ignore is that, when Brexiteers said they wanted to end "free movement", what they meant was "Europeans free movement to come to Great Britain". They honestly thought it was going to be a one-way thing only, and that Britons would keep their right to roam around Europe as they pleased. And I mean "honestly" in the most straight way possible. No "cognitive dissonance" involved, hence why they are so shocked to see that what they believe has no basis on reality. Many call it "entitlement" or "stupidity", but it's more British exceptionalism. The internalised believe that British people have a cuasi-divine birthright, which nowadays it's rationalised as "we're so rich, y'all!", but it's really just a left over from the British Empire supremacism. Let's not forget it's been less than 100 years since it disappeared. Worse than that, it didn't disappear with a disaster that would humble their people and their values, so of course a lot of people, specially older people, would be influenced by it to some extend.

As a consultant that moved from Australia to Sweden and then commuted between Stockholm and London every week for month. I am so glad I don’t do that anymore. This is crazy. At the time I had an Australian passport still and had to queue at the border control every Monday morning. Meanwhile my Portuguese colleagues could walk on through and get a taxi and sometime be in town before I was even through the border. So a specialised consultant coming into your country to help one of your biggest retailers is no longer welcome freely? Recruitment firms that look for contractors to fly into uk for their projects are going to have a hell of a time trying to convince someone to make that commute now. Now with the pandemic I guess it doesn’t matter anyway. We travel far less thank god :)
