Trail magazine and the British Mountaineering Council present Britain's Mountain Challenges.
In this video we're looking at Striding Edge: one of the finest ridges in the whole of the Lake District.
Leading onto the summit of Helvellyn, at 950m the park's third highest mountain, it's a dramatically positioned and excitingly slender route of huge appeal to walkers and scramblers throughout the year. As with all ridges it becomes extremely challenging in strong winds or when there's ice or snow underfoot (so make sure to pick conditions suitable to your level of experience!), but when conditions are right it can offer a truly exceptional mountain experience.
Striding Edge can without doubt be described as a Lakeland classic - one that every lover of the Cumbrian fells should experience in their walking career.
Look out for other videos in the 'Britain's Mountain Challenges' series featuring some of the UK's finest and most thrilling mountain landscapes.

Love it, love it, love it! I try to walk Striding Edge at least once a year, usually in the 'normal' direction but just sometimes 'against the flow' just to be a devil.

My first ever Grade 1 scramble! Lovely views but I advise going up it towards the Helvellyn summit rather than down it from my own experience.

Not for the faint of heart or if you're scared of heights. I'm terrified of heights, so did the 'ruptured crab manoeuvre' all the way across 😂 Definitely a 'Bucket List' entry though if you love Lakeland.

I've done it many times & in all weathers. It is not a walk & not a climb that should be taken lightly. Many people have lost their footing, especially in poor weather, ice & snow. It comands RESPECT at all times & a lapse in concentration can be fatal. This goes for the whole of Striding Edge, the very steep scramble upto the summit & parts of Swirrel Edge. All of which have witnessed fatalities. I say to any first timer to be very very careful & if you're not good with heights but still want to hit the summit, forget Striding or Swirrel Edge but instead go up the shorter, steep but safe route from Grassmere side. Once on the summit, the view looking down & a long Striding Edge is quite special indeed.

Amazing to think that in 1926 an Afro 504R landed on Helvellyn and took off again over Striding Edge. Not a lot of people know that! Sorry Michael!

Not to be taken lightly. There are numerous deaths in the lakes every year and this edge is responsible for a good %.

It's strange to see striding edge so empty, when I did it it was absolutely crowded

Is it as bad as it looks? It's one of my life goals but it looks quite scary. My grandma did this when she was 77.x

Angela Melvin i just came back from it and it is rather frightening when first starting (like me) especially when you look down to the left (when walking to Helvellyn summit). But it is a great walk

It's much worse than it looks imo. I approached it and was amazed at the opportunities there were to easily lose one's life. No thanks.

Striding edge has a certain reputation, but even as someone who dislikes exposure to height, I prefer Striding Edge to Sharp edge on Blencathra which I will never go up ever again. 40 years ago I went up sharp edge on a wet day and I can say I didn't walk up, my boots were slipping , couldn't get grip and basically I thought this is the day I am going to die !! Send for the yellow helicopter I said ( they were using the yellow Sikorsky Sea King at the time ) With hind sight I think it was the crap soles on my boots, I might try again one day with modern technically better footwear......on a very dry day .

I did Sharp edge for my first Lakes scramble at the age of 60 this summer. It was a bit hairy in places but those in the know reckoned it was the harder of the two.

I hope do be doing this route in 2021. Im pretty new to hill walking but have decent fitness. Will this route be ok? From the photos I have seen on twitter, it looks like one slip & your gone.

He makes it look easy but you have to tread carefully, have a head for heights and just take your time. Loads of people do it . I personally wouldn’t do it on very wet , Icy or windy days .

@@anthonycraddock6739 you were right he did make it look easy. I have recently been up there & had to turn back because of the wind. Very scary place in bad conditions. Gona try again but will have to wait till next year. May I reckon

@@S.Hitchcock I did it in 2014 and was on my own around 8am . So just stood there reluctantly not sure if i was going to do it . Then someone else turned up with a dog and I had a conversation with him and followed them . Since then I did sharp edge on Blencathra in same situation wasnt sure but went ahead . I'm 60 now and this year I did blencathra halls fell ridge . Plus tryfan in snowdonia . All scrambles and I'd stil say I was uncomfortably scared but taking your time in dry weather you'll be fine .I'm quite happy to carry on doing the wainwrights. Iv done 31 up to now , 23 this yr alone . Good luck with it !
