The first part of this series may be found here:
• Britannia and the Worl...
In the first video of this series, we saw a very particular vision of the Victorian era. It was triumphalist, whiggish, and proud. It emphasized the virtues of Victorian society and the British public. The imagery seemed to imply that Britannia was a divine figure, and that Victoria was a sort of physical manifestation of this perfect Goddess. We also saw the British Lion, that proud defender of Britannia's glory and honour, and the policeman of Europe. Those initial animations served to show us what Victorian Britain was, and what was soon to be marching to war, and yet something about the animations were just 'wrong.' There were constant hints that the narrative we were being fed was not wholly truthful, and that beneath the surface of England's glory, there was a perverse barbarism. In this our second video, we shall see Britannia send her Lion to war. But not everything is as it seems, and our proud, noble Lion, is not the only force at Britannia's disposal...

I had a lot of fun recording this one! Maybe a little too much...if you haven't seen the first part of this series, I suggest you do so before coming here, or at least be sure to watch the source material in full (which is linked in the description). Though, we certainly have much better audio quality, this time around!

"Truly it is the British who will do the heavy lifting" : French soldiers in Crimea = 310,000 ; English = 98,000 ; French killed = 98,000 ; English killed = 22,000. The French victory and taking of the fortress of *Malakoff* (while at the same time and in another key sector the British attack failed) led to the evacuation of Sebastopol by the Russians and the suing of peace.

The portrayal of the French here is kind of odd when you actually study the Crimean War. In that conflict, the Britons were in disarray and lost more men to disease than to Russian arms. The French, conversely, had near perfect logistics for this operation and kept disease relatively low in their camps. Then again, this portrayal of the French is probably British jingoism, as Brandon said.
@fuzzydunlop7928
@fuzzydunlop7928 6 лет назад
I noticed that, even when used as an allegory for the war the French depiction just seems like classic "Ewww....the French" behavior from the British.

@@b.griffin317 The movie parodies British jingoism yet reinforces the values conveyed in the glorification of the British Empire through the splendor of British uniforms and the minimization of the role of other nations in the conflict (such as France). Criticism of the British Empire is 5% of the movie ; all the rest is brazen, unadulterated exaltation of Britishness.
@b.griffin317
@b.griffin317 5 лет назад
@@xyzoub I would argue that over-weaning glorification is itself parody, or at least mockery. it's *sooo* over the top it cannot be taken seriously and must in fact be the opposite of its apparent meaning. "ra ra britian! **wink** and if you believe that one then I have a bridge over the east river to sell you."

This perfectly captures the hideous nature of mass hysteria and mob mentality. It's the same mentality that makes people cry "burn the witch" fueled by their fear of what might happen if they don't. People can be made to fear the monster so much that they will become the monster, in order to defeat it.

Not at all. That's a facile and inaccurate comparison. At the time Russia was a competing power and a real military threat, just the same as when this movie was made. Today China holds that position. When people say "Russia" in the media today they're not calling for war, they're decrying corruption and political interference, which was certainly NOT what they were doing in the 1850s!

War has a Janus head. And we all see the ideal face in the history books, depicted by numbers and dates. But the depiction of the second face, barbarity and atrocities committed as a means to victory is what you show us here by explaining these sometimes abstract, caricature like, pictures. Thank you for the great insight of the historical context. I appreciate and applaud your effort.

Nice analysis Brandon. However, I was wondering if you could look into this part from that scene. When the bulldogs come in, we can hear the phrase “death to the tyrant.” I looked up that phrase, and I didn’t find much. Disregarding the American stuff thar goes with the phrase, I found little for it other than Brutus possibly saying it during Caesar’s assassination. I’m not sure what it could signify in the scene.
@BrandonF
@BrandonF 6 лет назад
Hum, I'm not entirely sure what it could be a reference to, if it's not just a simple exclamation describing what we're supposedly seeing on screen. I think a big part of it would be whatever is said in the next sentence- but I'm not able to make out the words there. It's certainly noteworthy though.
@memeb7772
@memeb7772 6 лет назад
Brandon F. Okay, perhaps the history of the phrase might not be of much importance, but I do consider the phrase to be of some significance for being one of the few phrases we hear. Perhaps we take some perspective. They are likely referring to the Tsar as the Tyrant, but is he? Sure, he’s invading Turkey, but under the premise of protecting the Orthodox Christians (though that wasn’t the true premise), it doesn’t seem tyrannical. Then again, this is the Reactionary Tsar Nicholas I, so perhaps he could be called a tyrant. Let’s also look at Turkey, though I’ll be quite simple in these descriptions and skimming over some broad stuff. Turkey, AKA the Ottoman Empire, nearly took over all of the Balkans and threatened Europe. It also fought British and French navies as it tried and failed to stop the revolting Greeks a generation before the Crimean war. Now that doesn’t right. With the Russians attacking, it does not make much sense to say “Poor little Turkey.” They may be an old, weakening empire, but they are an empire that once threatened Europe. Now this is not an exact observation, just a different perspective, a more Russian perspective probably. For them, it was possible that some were thinking they were defeating a tyrant and protecting Christians. My findings are probably not accurate. I don’t have a bias against either at this point in time, I just don’t think that either of them was truly good or a tyrant in this war.

Easy gents. They have the right to be angry. It is the right of those who have fallen beneath the sword of conquest to be angry when their conqueror falls. But we shouldn’t be like them and let our glories rule our discourse. Our time of empire is done now. As theirs was long ago. We should accept it with magnanimity as they should and move on. Lest we become so enamoured with ancient glories that we never leave them. And let us remember, that is the reason why our time of empire is gone.
