The warrior will never disappear because of the variants it has that’s the thing with the mod it’s not just one vehicle it’s 6/7.. when I joined in 89 as a recovery mechanic we had a warrior Version for recovery fitted with a 20t winch and a repair version these could both hold either 2 warrior packs (engines) or 1 challenger pack both fitted with cranes

OK, the thing about us (🇬🇧) not using APCs before the cold war. During the second world war we built and used the 'Universal Carrier' Tracked, lightly armoured (7-10mm) 3 ton open top vehicle. It is, in fact, the single most produced fighting vehicle in existence at 👉👉 _113,000_ 👈👈 Ford 4.0L petrol V8 Many different configurations, Scout, Machine Gun, Mortar, Artillery, Battle Taxi, 40mm anti-tank, flamethrower. Used by 33 different nations from my 1935 to 1960.

When I did my Armoured infantry Platoon Commander's Course my instructor for the gunnery phase was an actually an American SNCO on attachment to us (British Army). He was an expert on the Bradley and the Warrior. His take was that the ideal IFV would be a Warrior chasis with the Bradley turret. The gun is archaic but it does the job you want it to do, but it is prone to problems if you're not using it regularly. If you use it a lot then you get to be able to hear when your gun is about to jam and you sort the jam before it happens. It's far from ideal but if you are looking to put HE down on enemy in trenches the HE rounds are effective. The anti-armour rounds don't do much against a BMP's armour but do you really want to have IFVs going head to head? Warrior CSP has now been cancelled and Ajax was not purchased as a replacement for Warrior but rather for our lighter recce (recon) vehicles, but programme is in trouble now. The big issue seems to be armour technology really hasn't moved forward since the Warrior came into service. The materials are the same. The physics haven't changed. There are lots of advances in system upgrades but Western armies are really struggling to procure a basic vehicle which is better than the one it's replacing. My own personal suspicion is that procurement officers don't want to admit if they buy a wholly new vehicle it won't be any better than the Warrior. But there is an expectation that there will be some sort of capability leap in the 2030s so if we get a new vehicle now it will probably rapidly find itself out of date. It would be possible to buy new Warrior vehicles from third party suppliers building under license and that would be fine to cover the capability gap. We cannot really continue with the current fleet though. They are made with an aluminium hull which works better than steel for lighter vehicles but it is not as resilient over time and it gets twisted and cracks eventually. The vehicles have a life expectancy of 30 years and they are older than that now. When they started checking which vehicles were still structurally sound enough to take the new turret the results were kind of scary. So new vehicle or find someone who can build individual replacements to maintain a Warrior fleet. And finally Johnson Beharry does not have an N in his surname. I know because I was his platoon commander.

I think the Brits nailed the equation with Warrior. I remember when they were phasing out the Buccaneer and they asked the pilots and WSOs what they wanted to replace it with...most of them said a Buccaneer with modern avionics and engines. The Warrior upgrade project appeared, at least from what I've seen, to cover the bases and pretty much give the Royal Army an AFV that was rebuilt and brought back to the top of the list of "great IFVs".

I used the warrior as a dismount and a gunner for years, used it in Iraq and Afghanistan. Overall a not bad IFV but it really needed a fully electric turret with a guided missile mount on it like the Bradley. Plus it could only carry 7 dismounts when the normal section size was 8 infantry. We saw from Bosnia, Iraq & Afghanistan that it required massive armour upgrades that alone makes me think that a new vehicle is required, have a look at the photos of them in Iraq with shit hanging off all over them. In Afghanistan the warriors never actually went into the greenzone only the Viking and later Warthog were able to go in due to their size, the warriors were mainly used up in the north of Helmand going up to FOB Edinburgh. BTW i know this after two tours as a Viking commander in Afghanistan and 3 tours in Iraq.

Looks like an impressive vehicle, typical of the British Army. But, old soldiers (Warriors) never die, they simply fade away (the phrase used by General Douglas MacArthur in his April 19, 1951 farewell address to the U.S. Congress).

My mates cousin was in the Cavalry in Bosnia and Balkan areas, and commanded a Warrior section. He told us a few good Warrior stories, One of which was finding out just how fast they could go in reverse when they crested a hill and found a T-72 heading their way..... The other was "on patrol" around Sarajevo (i think?), when they parked the Warrior outside a Club, left a man in charge of it, and went inside to patrol the club for a while.... True Cavalry behaviour! The birds are almost as important as tea!

use to see Warrior all the time on the shakedown runs from GKN, along with other oddities based on them, was once driving down the A442 in Telford at 70mph and was overtaken by a Warrior, I then sped-up to follow it and it was almost doing 80mph, and it was so loud with the noise the tracks were making despite the track-pads, and when i got the the traffic island by the GKN factory the Warrior went around the island like a sports car, another time I had to go to the GKN factory to drop of and wait for a waste skip to be filled before taking it to the dump, and spent 2 hours on the embankment of the little test track as they thundered around around it doing tests before taking them for road tests, was quite a sight to see their performance, though this was obviously before they set the speed limiters etc.

Several of the main IFVs out there have been around for a good while already. Warrior, BMP-2 and -3, and the Bradleys all came into service in the early or mid 1980s.

The Warrior is an beast of a machine . I loved working with it in Bosnia.

Was in Germany in 89 when The Black Watch were working up to readiness on the warrior. Its abilities were awesome and ahead of it's time, which might explain it's longevity.

Thank you for a great video. I think it's brilliant that you are getting collaborators to add more diverse insights on subjects. Your channel is achieving a level above all others because of this. However as to the Warrior I believe the UK must be cautious not to glorify it to the point (because of its past performance) that they continue to use it beyond its obsolescence. One of many examples of this is the Japanese with the Zero fighter in WW2. Keep up the good work.

I was a warrior gunner/commander in Bosnia (OP Grapple 4) I was attached to 2 Royal Anglian at the time from 2 PWRR. That thing was an absolute beast, go anywhere and do anything, it was definitely the "Peace" maker, as hostilities would stop when it turned up.

Thank you for covering some British stuff. Many people think that since the UK is so small we`re trash. But we are just as advanced and high tech as America just smaller.

Started my training as an A mech at the SEME in '89 and was sent to Germany in '90. We were with 2RTR and then came the handover to QRIH. We looked after the challenger 1 and my baby was still a Chieftain ARRV. The new Warrior repair vehicle arrived but our other crew in the fitter section got it, which I was a teeny bit jealous of 😉 Was an amazing piece of equipment though.

Thank you for your excellent work Cappy, if memory serves me correct the only beef I recall about the Warrior was the harshness of the ride ...many reports about injuries and fatigue ..Matsimus said it too

Bigger question, why does the British MOD see the need for their new IFV to be fully amphibious. That seems to be the only/biggest differential between the flawed Ajax and the other proven options (CV 90, Puma, Lynx)? Of course the Ajax is severely flawed at the moment & it is not clear that the issues can be corrected.

I joined the British Army at 16 in 1990 and the Warrior had already been in use for quite a while and was on all the promo stuff i got from the recruitment office. Now, in 2022, we still use them and they were supposed to be either completely replaced or massively upgraded, instead of just the turret, but we've got the new Ajax family of vehicles, Boxer vehicles and the brand new Chally 3 tanks to pay for. Who knows what they're going to do with our old workhorse?

The warrior never had a GPMG. It’s coaxial MG was a 7.62 Hughes chain gun, fitted in every variant including the variants without the 30mm.

Ah yes 30mm Rarden. Because loading a box magazine into a slow firing gun is, totally, still viable. Esesually without stabilisation. New turret was needed, waste of potential but i like the idea of Boxer so fingers crossed that it doesn't Ajax itself.

There was an interim test for an IFV based on the FV432, mating that with a turret from a Fox Armoured Car. They pretty much ended up getting most of the bad points of both vehicles. Though at least it was more stable than the Fox, which had a stability issue when firing to the sides. Thirteen were built, and twelve were allocated to the Berlin Brigade to give them a little extra firepower. Obviously they never saw action. If you want to look them up they had the designation of FV432/30.

Hey man, good video just a few points to make you aware of. The 40mm cannon upgrade has been dropped as the army will be moving to the Boxer (first few have started to arrive) interesting as its the first time in a while we will be relying on a wheeled AFV. A lot was made of its off road potential and whilst it is more than capable the idea that it keeps up with Challengers is simply not true, they like to say they do but I can assure you a tank leaves a Warrior well behind. Also the protection is purely based area additional armour and TES as most modern munitions will fire straight through them. On a final note to the new contributor, great to see a fellow Brit serviceman sharing his experience's however for the love of God, pronounce CSGT Beharry VC name correctly, we dont give many VC's out so say his name properly dropshort ;) Keep up the good work and Lets Go Brandon.

This was my vehicle. Some good memories and interesting days in them. It’s a great vehicle, the Ajax was rumoured around the time I left in 2010. But a friend who left much later said the Ajax wasn’t looking too good. So the warrior will live on.

While we are on topic about the British might be cool to do some videos on the British experience in Afgan and Iraq, maybe like some of their bayonet charges or the battle of Musakala

I take issue , you missed out a very important advantage of the warrior over the M2 Bradley. It comes with a BV Mk.iv .

Mech Infantry units in FV 432's were fitted with Peak engineering L37 turrets. ( L37 is a vehicle mount variant of the L7GPMG/M240 ]

“The British army had never really used many APCs…” Except they invented the concept in WW1. In WW2 they fielded more APCs than any other nation, starting with the Bren Carier then followed by the Kangaroo series. The Kangaroo’s being the fore-runner to all modern APC. Kangaroo’s, as opposed to German or American half tracks, we’re intended to keep up with armor and not simply taxi infantry around. They had enough armor to see the front lines too. The half tracks designs were armored trucks, designed to work behind the lines but without enough armor to keep out any serious missiles.

Warrior does not have a stabilised gun. The upgrade with a the CTA/40. This has just been cancelled. Ajax might be scrapped too

I was one of the first in my old regiment to learn to drive them. In the space of only a couple of months I was put on a six day car driving course,, was given a 1litre mini Cooper that my mum bought me for 50 quid and went straight into a two week driving course for the fv 510 . That was all in 1995 a year before going to Bosnia. Also ltrained in gunning using both the rarden cannon and 7.62 mm Hughses chain gun and commanding in them not bad going for a 1st class private soldier. At the time of course.

Not sure I can agree that the Brits never used many APCs until the post war period. Weren’t the universal Bren gun carriers one of the most produced vehicles during WWII? Sure they were open top but were highly manoeuvrable, made of light armour, and had some firepower as well

When Warrior first entered service ,the crew used to get seasick as they could see the fuel tank and it was clear ,so watching the fuel slosh around made them ill..Being a mechanic the the army i did my warrior training about may 90 ..Excellent suspension ..The money would be better spent on Warrior rather than that ajax abortion...Also we are still using the 43 series of vehicle ,i think they re engined it and gave it a new name Bulldog i think ..

The Brits tend to design and deploy reliable and robust battle kit. We Yanks over design, try to cover too many mission bases. Fast, reliable, survivable for grunts inside and with an accurate main gun saves the day. East to fix would be nice as well.

The vehicle sounds like it is great in combat and will be almost difficult to replace due to it's quality of build and it's military record. I am a retired airman with the U.S. Air Force and worked on the B-52 during the Vietnam War and the A-10 Thunderbolt II after the war and both was great aircraft and I miss those old BUFF's so much, especially the "D" models which was destroyed after being retired. I knew some guys who was in the Army and they was glad to see the Air Force coming while they was pinned down in jungles.
