COSFORD ENGLAND July 12, 2018. A wide variety of aircraft are on display at this great Aircraft Museum. Shown is a the great BAC TSR2 that was killed off by the government of the time who thought missiles would replace aircraft! What a daft idea - the TSR2 would probably still been in service if the go-ahead had been given at the time.

I grew up not far from Boscombe Down and I was lucky enough to seeTSR2 XR219 flying when it was there in the early 60's. Years later I was in the RAF and was at Cosford when this airframe was delivered in 1974/75.

The documentaries that pop up about this include Dennis Healey & Tony Benn blaming everybody else about the debacle.

Dan, it is said that this aircraft would still be in use today if the politicians had not stuck their noses into it, Mike

Surely the greatest crime in history the cancellation of TSR2 😞

Stephen, sure was, ranks up with the plan to cut British rail in the 60’s and NZ disbanding our Strike Force. It is said the TSR2 would still be in service today, it was that good, Mike

@@AirflowNZthe sneaky way it was done aswell, announce the cancellation in the budget statement so it does not have to go to a full parliamentary debate, make up fantastic claims to buy the f111 and not follow up on it, the entire British aviation industry as an independent national capability died that day look at the next generation of aircraft the jaguar /Anglo French the tornado a multi European effort, West land helicopters dead the nimrod cancelled in much the same way as TSR2, Aircraft in service 16 in various states of completion crews trained and bull dozed in weeks of cancellation only to be replaced by a pimped up 737! The government are corrupt to the core and always have been dancing to the USA song and European interests sorry state of affairs!

I think the problem was that this was such an advanced, amazing aircraft they tried to make it do too many things which pushed the price up causing the then Labour government to get cold feet. But as you say Stephen an appalling decision that affected the UK aviation industry for years. Fortunately, I live about 30/40 minutes drive away from Cosford and make the pilgrimage several times a year mainly just to stare at this bad boy.
