My Husband is a BA Captain who does the tricky captains approach on a few times a month. Believe me if the Captain thinks that there is any potential risk to the plane the passengers and the crew they will not land. The sea may look calm but the crosswinds are a nightmare there Safety first at all times

It's a courageous pilot , he doesn't try to make impossible and keep safety condition for all the passenger. It's not a simple choice to decide a toga maneuver. Congratulation for the pilot !!!

So many aviation experts in the comments section! It's a pretty gusty day, that's plain to see, and Funchal is a short runway with very little room for error. This does not come down to pilot ability.

Annoying but better to have to walk away from a plane in one piece at the wrong airport than end up in a bodybag amonst wreckage at the right airport. I say 10 out of 10 to the pilots for putting their passengers' safety first instead of the airlines balance sheet.

Theres always those little bastards (kids) who start screaming, its even worse in turbulence everyone in the plane screams, im normally sat there laughing at them haha

GB Airways (BA owned) used to fly into Madeira till about 10 years ago when they sold out to Ezy: Ezy fly in several times a day and can handle the crosswinds which come down two separate valleys which open out at the thresholds of Rwy 05 (this video) and Rwy 23. There are windsocks at each end and one at midpoint of the runway and with offshore winds they can point in opposite directions. Most a/c after second go-around would divert to Porto Santo 20 miles away

Great decision by pilot as I have seen jets land at Madeira almost sideways instead of going around and, as in this case declaring a fuel emergency and refueling at Lisbon. People have to realize that unless the emergency is extreme, airlines are restricted from landing anywhere other than airports assigned to them.. Also they have to take into consideration that the have hundreds of people that may need security separation, accommodations and food and smaller airports are not equipped for that. The tough decisions are always the best.

Wind shear is a major problem for any aircraft during landing. At Madiera it happens when the wind is in the wrong direction which seems to be most of the time and thats why its one of the worlds most difficult airports to land at. That fact that a plane landed before and after is no measure of their skill against the BA pilot as wind shear can vary from second to second, gust to gust. At the end of the dsay all that matters is he landed safely.

Not surprising. Having flown the Funchal approach in X plane, it's a tricky circling approach even in calm winds, but with the cliffs on the left side, it causes quick wind changes.

I like how we heard the autopilot during his announcement.

That is really odd. Not much of a wobble to be identified (great job holding the camera steady). The runway is also long enough for a late landing for a A320. They could also have chosen to land at Porto Santo to simply refuel and try again or have people sail from Porto Santo to Madeira.

Think that is scary. My planes wing tip hit the runway while landing in Vegas. The plane ahead of us had 3 ambulances around it. Needless to say it was a little windy that night.

go arounds are fairly unpopular and cost fuel and nerves that s why there is enough contingency fuel on board to reach an alternate. that applies to smaller aircraft as well so you are well advised to have enough fuel i.e. endurance to reach another airport and to draw up a flightplan to accomodate.

Fly with TAP next time the most experienced pilots for Madeira. That's a difficult aerport I respect the pilot for not landing with proper conditions. I have see another planes not land there TAP included. Short runway crossed winds...

Is it just me or did anybody saw a dark shadow moving along side the aircraft after it attempted to land. The object appears at the bottom right corner of your screen at exactly (8:20)! It could be either a shark or whale or dolphin or marlin, confusing me!

Well. Not going to go never to Madeira. I experienced a go around in San Miguel, Azores, and It has been such a scary situation for me. Later I have found out that pilots are well prepared for these situations and trained, but anyway, so scary.

Considering how smooth the water was, the wind seems pretty calm ? 2 x go arounds, pilot training ?

On the bright side, the runway there is not short, as short runways are usually less than 8,000 feet long.

Everyone sounded calm. I was flying with my family and our plane had to go around once. My mom and brother were really pissed and it was just 1 go around

Is it me or is every missed landing where the flaps aren't fully down to 40?

Even more recently a BA 320-251 with much larger engines in May/June '23 had to abort twice the first time because they were excessively high on final approach. You'd think the crews would have practiced in simulators! Other airline crews weren't having problems.

something similar happened to me on japan, we tried 2 times to land on narita. But the third time was the smoothest landing i've experienced.
