The second instalment on Close Quarters Combat training the British Army delivers to it's troops in Afghanistan. This video focuses on the tension and physical reactions to the experience and rapid decision-making required whilst in a close quarter fight in a counter insurgency campaign. Not everyone you encounter will be enemy, but you need to be ready if it is. Though this doesn't happen for British Forces these days it is still mandatory training for those troops going out on the ground in Helmand.
The troops featured in this video are from the Irish Guards, who are forming the Brigade Operations Company for Herrick 18. They are using the SA-80 A2 with underslung grenade launcher and the L129A1 Sharpshooter Rifle. Some drills may have been omitted for security and brevity purposes.
Filmed on : 2 X Nikon D4, with :70-200mm VR and a 24-70mm Lens. Sound via a Rode mic into camera. Filmed on Location at the Close Quarters Battle Range in Camp Bastion by the British Army Combat Camera Team in Afghanistan for Op HERRICK 18 - Captain Mau Gris, Sergeant Barry Lloyd and Sergeant Barry Pope.
Video released by the British Army

yes he did, the reason he done that is so the when he goes round the corner his weapon isn't blocked by the corner and so he has first sitting on the enemy

simon olds Yeah, but if you fire the weapon from the left shoulder, the reciprocating cocking handle would cause severe discomfort to the jaw and you'd get some lovely hot casings in the face. NEVER fire an any SA80 weapon from the left shoulder, doesn't matter if it's the L98 or the L86, you just don't do it ;)
@christopherkeenan3445
@christopherkeenan3445 10 лет назад
Elliot Ormston thats why if you are looking in the video the weapon is slightly titled so that wont happen. and that is standard training now for CQB (compound clearance) obviously you haven't done that before or done any recent training or OP HERRICK's or you would of been taught this, or its either you are in a chipy regiment i.e. RLC, REME.... NOT INFANTRY......

To clarify some very wafty “expert” comments on here. The weapon systems they are both using, are standard issue at the time of this video being made. The kit they are wearing Is standard issue MTP for its time. They are from the Foot guards household division not special forces. They are in Afghanistan. This is normal training being conducted, and yes you can use both weapon systems left handed.

The reason they acquired it in the first place was so the men with the L96's could do CQC at all. It means they can still be effective marksmen even in areas where they know they will have compound fighting without giving up the 7.62 NATO round, even if it's not quite as long ranged as the L96 is. (Which is still in service for when they don't need an L129A1)

Actually, this video only shows the point-man shouldering the SA80 on his left (weak) side, it doesn't actually show him firing it from this position. It's kind of a shame because it would be great for them to show to the world what happens when an SA80 or other bullpups, is fired left shouldered. But you are right, a little practice can help avoid getting some hot casings in your eye. I'd be the first to admit that it doesn't always work but it happens less with more practice. For those who are not sure, the left shoulder transition is a recent but current SOP for FIBUA in the British Army (not including UKSF, where it has long been taught, though C8s are used), as one instructor put it "would you rather get a little (hot) brass in the face or a round in chest?".
@AlexSDU
@AlexSDU 8 лет назад
+DareTactical CQB True, but other bullpups weapons are mostly ambidextrous. If you using SA80 left handed, the ejecting casing is less of your concern, but rather the moving charging handle(cocking handle) that would knock your teeth off and probably break your jaw, when firing. SA80 is not ambidextrous. It's made ONLY for right handed uses.
@samswann3727
@samswann3727 8 лет назад
AlexSDU AlexSDU In my early years as an army cadet, we did some basic CQB, despite not even being trained how to fire left handed I managed it, as I had to spend a lot of time looking round left corners, I put the rifle on my upper arm, rather than in my shoulder, I know it's bad drills, not very accurate and poor for recoil controll, I manged it and what accurate enough. Becuse of the angle I held it the rounds hit my chest and not my face, and the cocking handle didn't go near my face. It is for right handed use, but it is possible to use it left handed, wouldn't do it on a range but in an emergency it works
@AlexSDU

sam swann Thanks for sharing your experience. Personally, I like the SLR more. Maybe because I like long rifle. Plus, it got that beautiful flash hider. My dad used it back in the 70's, in the jungle of Borneo & Malaya.
@samswann3727
@samswann3727 8 лет назад
AlexSDU Unfortunately I have never been able to fire the SLR, but have been able to play around with one. Personally I thought it was a bit clunky and big for my liking, although this may be becuse I am used to smaller weapons, (like the l85, and a few ar15 variants when I have been over to the US) but it in terms of looks it is my favourite weapon. Thing is my experience with weapons is limited to what I have done with the cadets as a kid, and various trips to America where I did a CQB course with a swat team, so I am no expert. Hoping to join in a couple of years though.

The L85A2 is a truly modern rifle, in fact it's probably one of the best. It's got a noted accuracy above the AR series for sure (longer barrel, tighter make) and is the most reliable primary NATO rifle in service today after the HK A2 upgrades. After the rails were added, bi-grip placed on, Elcon sights and red dots atop with new camo and lighter mags alongside laser designators they are one of the most modern service rifles in the world today, they only entered service in the 2000's remember!

Ignore Festivejelly. The Technique used in the US Army is more fast paced breach and clear of one room at a time in a fire team size unit. What you see here is quiet and slow quiet similar to SWAT clearing multiple rooms and corridors. The Brits employ a similar technique as the US army at a squad level however this is just two men.

From what I've been told by a former colleague of mine who is still very much in the know, the method being taught avoids the cocking handle in the face. Having said that, from what he described it looks like the guy in the video is not doing it correctly. The method being taught is to shoulder the weapon slightly off centre of the chest rather than fully into the weak side shoulder, like this guy seems to do.

Don't fall into the trap in believing that a weapon is crap simply because the SF don't use it. SF units have their own requirements for weapons due to role for that particular environment, one of the main reasons they don't use the L85 is because of weight. DOn't get me wrong, its far from ideal, but too many "diss" it without understanding it. Using the L85 with the left shoulder isn't a new thing anyway, I was taught it during NITAT training in 1988

That's some pretty ballsy and dare I say "Daring" cqb, moving quite fast, not to mention the "Yelling" is usually not something you aspire to do, you keep it as low as possible, to deny the enemy knowledge of your position, and how far in a building you are, not to mention to deny them details of which specific room you are in. Good reactions, though serving in another military branch we're taught differently.

Cross grip, not lefting it. The idea is that the brass goes between the rifle and your head on the opposite side. Not a perfect solution as with say an ambidextrous rifle. But certainly a hell of a lot more preferable to taking an AK round in the gut because you had to expose yourself.

Ok I have three rants 1 will be he could say civ which is short for civilian 2 the guy in the back tail end Charley why isn't he covering his six and three where's the flash bangs in the room entering just in case there could be more if it was a real situation. Unless there's a hostage situation then you use a sniper to scout the area or window and report back of it's safe to fire. That's how I've been taught in military training.

These troops forgot bayonets. Don't forget to leave them behind, as it helped the ones in Afghanistan and in South Africa.

I wonder how would British soldiers using the SA80 would fire the weapon from the left shoulder. I thought it would be dangerous.

+Mark Lee, it could be done, but has to be done at an angle because of the charging handle.

Thanks for replying. He looks really awkward holding it on the left shoulder. Is it as difficult as it looks?

SFSG, I believe. And no, I'm not just going by the blanked out faces for proof. I'm going by the Paraclete Releasable Assault Vest Carrier (RAV) armour they are wearing, and the HK417 battle rifle. None of which is issued to regular forces. They look to be wearing the American version of Multicam as well, not the British-modified MTP.
